"Vell, back to da drawing voard!" No in all seriousness, you guys did a good job, this is one of the better V-2 launch copies that ive seen and at the end of the day, nobody got hurt.
Question can a model turbine engine with a thrust rate of 5 to 1 use instead of rocket engine?, Because you really not going out of the earth atmosphere.
I remember hearing a story once from a guy who was sitting on top of his RV filming this, directly under the flight path. He said through the viewfinder of his camera it looked like a black dot that just kept getting bigger...and bigger...and bigger...
if thats a reall v2 rocket that must be a prototype V2 were pretty big roughly the size of a small bus considering they were the germans version of our A bomb
BEAUTIFUL LOOKING ROCKET! I was watching it, and at the beginning I was thinking to myself "Now that'd be a VERY cool Civil Air Patrol activity to go to, and sure enough right after I said that I saw 2 people in uniform!" HOORAH CAP, from Oregon Wing!
Heh. Neat to find this video. I was there. The thing flew about 200 feet over my head about the time the nose cone came off. It's a 1/3rd-scale model V-2 (still BIG!). What happened (as was told at the time) was that the launch lugs caught on the launch tower rail. The motors were powerful enough to rip the launch tower off it's mount and that's what caused the rocket to tilt as it took off. At that point, it's pure ballistics. Ouchie.
@Topaz233 i think you're right it does seem that the rocket tilts toward the tower as it takes offf which suggests that the rocket did get caught on the rail
I remember this one. My 10 year son retrieved a 9 volt battery from the wreckage. It was completely ripped apart. He still has it. It was a close call for the spectators.
@miniatureme95 doesent matter. It will still go straight its the fins and wind and stability and placement of the motor mounts and all that jazz that make it do that crazy stuff. Rocket science isnt that complicated.
This launch was at LDRS 20 around the year 2000 in California ... from what I understood, this was a cluster and one of the 4 or 5 engines did not fire. Without the last engine, the rocket did not have enough thrust to lift the rocket with stability (thrust to weight under 3).
There was a chance that the rocket could have stabilized once enough fuel was burned, (thereby reducing weight) but after the rocket reached a certain angle it was too late.
That bird had two M's and two K's. Only got one of the M's to light. Off axis thrust killed it. Accelerometers need to see a shift in the G's during flight. Doesn't happen with an elliptical flight trajectory like that.
The next best thing to getting it all right is to blow shit up, so.... awesome!

no nuke at all! it was actually the first ballistic (and guided!) missile with larger range! but it was a conventional one, nothing nuclear

@JDrockerDUDE If i remember correctly, this was a cluster rocket, and one of the motors failed to ignite. That was probably why it went ballistic.

@wdude100 probably why. It was too heavy most likely and apogee was reached at a top speed soo yeah.

I think the rocket was nearly 300 lbs ..

Looked way underpowered. Maybe it was a cluster and not all the motors lit?

why do people find explosions in rockets cool? rockets dont explode unless they cato people!!! and a missle, and rocket are different lol ok.
JDrockerDUDE 2 years ago
@JDrockerDUDE for the same reason nascar fans love seeing the wrecks. :-)
nerys71 1 year ago
A landshark and a stripped chute. Judging by how slowly it took off, the motor didn't have anywhere near enough thrust to lift the rocket safely.
Omnigeek6 2 years ago
Correct. That rocket was 300 pounds on the pad.
That bird had two M's and two K's. Only got one of the M's to light. Off axis thrust killed it. Accelerometers need to see a shift in the G's during flight. Doesn't happen with an elliptical flight trajectory like that.
Missed a $150,000 motor home by about 200 feet.
