I'm sorry Mark Whalberg's performance was garbage. No where near oscar caliber. It's a joke that he was even nominated compared to the performances of the other nominees.
IMO Eddie lost b/c if he'd won the winners would be Whitaker, Mirren, Murphy, and Hudson which means the brown skin would've been the majority so they gave it to Arkin to even out the skin color which is total fucking bullshit
First he isn't supposed to win and then he IMMEDIATELY disrespects it by putting it on the floor! That always bugged me a little bit, probably because I was still in shock. Weird though that there's no podium, I don't hold Arkin accountable for this, it just didn't help!
boo eddie murphy gives the perfomance of his carrer in a much better movie and arkin gives an ok performace in an ok movie and he gets the oscar? what were they thinking? murphy was robbed. wahlbergs performace was better than arkins too.
Little miss sunshine is a masterpiece! It has comedy and drama in a perfect balance that few movies really have. And Alan Arkin was just amazing as that dirty-mouth grandpa...he was the spirit of that movie and this was completely deserved!
I agree the Arkin's performance was not the best of the five nominated... this Oscar was in a competition category but the Prize had a Honorary character
its an ok win , but i really feel that they give Arkin this award just to make up for not giving him oscars for his other previous works, more like a career award this one. But he's till an awesome actor.Much respect for him.
i wonder what could happen if jack nicholson was nominated. I was pissed when he lost to murphy at the golden globe that year.
its not sposed to be a popularity contest, yet we all know thats what the oscars have become, its not about talent. eddie murphy as much as i dislike him deserved to win, simple as that, i dont like him but would of voted for him, thats what the awards for. the oscars have destroyed there brand, once upon a time the golden globes were seen as a joke, theyve become more respected while oscar has dropped, the baftas is a much better tho is biased towards british actors. when crash won, the oscars
This is one of those wins that is very stupid and not making any sense at all, and was only because of politics. The same thing happened with Tommy Lee Jones winning his truly undeserved Oscar for ther Fugitive. Don't get me wrong, Little Miss Sunshine is one of my al time favorite comedies and Alan and Abby were superb, but all the other nominees (Even Wahlberg) blew Alan out of the water with their far superior performances. This felt like the 1993 Oscars with best Supporting Actor.
I thought Alan was okay in Little Miss Sunshine, but wasn't a best supporting actor performance. To be honest, I didn't understand the hype around Eddie Murphy. He was basically doing a James Brown impression in Dreamgirls. The real compeition, in my opinion, was between Haley and Dimon Honsu (don't know how to spell his name). These two actors were magnificent in their roles.
Yeah, I can't believe he won for this role. Not that he was bad in it, but he was only in the film for like 11 minutes. I personally think that every other actor gave better performances in their roles, specifically Wahlberg, Haley and Eddie Murphy. I was quite upset to see them all lose to Arkin, but I feel like it was the Academy's way of awarding him since he may never get nominated again in his lifetime. Pity.
This should have been Arkin's third Oscar. Should have won in 1967 for his non nominated role in WAIT UNTIL DARk and in 1968 for THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER.
The Oscar should have went to Djimon Honsou or Jackie Earle Haley. There was nothing sophisticated about Alan Arkin's performance what so ever. They gave it to him because he is a veteran.
I dont even understand why Arkin was nominated and won like every award around him that season... Was his performance that amazing and award-worthy? Was the character that strong a character to deserve all this attention? I just don't get it.
I'm a little annoyed as well. Don't get me wrong, I adore Little Miss Sunshine, but Alan's performance was nowhere near Oscar Worthy.Djimon Hounsou, Mark Wahlberg, Eddie Murphy and Jackie Earle Haley were robbed. This was just like the Best Supporting Actor @ the 1993 Oscars. So many talented Actors were nominated (DiCaprio, Fiennes, Malkovich), yet won by a guy who was bland as hell in that movie and did nothing worthy of it, Tommy Lee Jones of The Fugitive. Pathetic.
@rps121 it was a principal role, not supporting. If not Whalberg, I would nominate instead Jack Nicholson or Martin Sheen. Damon was... annoying. Maybe it was because of his role? I don't know but he did not deserve.
Djimon Hounsou in Blood Diamond was by far my favorite (w/Jackie Earle Haley a close 2nd). The scene where he confronts his son who is tinkering on a devastating act of patricide blew me away.
@MCEProd22 Yeah. Good thing they didn't waste the Oscar on Murphy and instead gave it to the most deserving nominee who's not stupid enough to do very shitty movies immediately after a kind of good movie that got him all sorts of awards.
@moviemaniac14 so vwhat you are sayin is ..you are othet dummies are judging eddie on another film istead of the one he got nominated vfor?? HOW FUCKIN RETARDED IS THAT??
@xkaliber72 No I'm saying it's kind of interesting that since Eddie's loss, he's been doing shitty movies ever since. Alan Arkin on the other hand just happened to still do great movies after his win. It just seems like Eddie Murphy gave up after his loss. Also I think they actually gave it to the better performer as well. It's just a coincidence that Murphy's career just happened to go down right after his loss. So it just seems like in the end, it would've seemed like a waste if he had won.
Djimon Hounsou was PURE ROBBED, he blow me away with his brilliant performance in "Blood Diamond",he's for sure the best african-american actor in Hollywood. I rank the nominees like this: 1. Djimon Hounsou, 2.Jackie Earle Haley, 3.Eddie Murphy, 4.Alan Arkin, 5.Mark Whalberg. as much as i respect Alan Arkin, a veteran actor he wasn't no way better than Hounsou, about Whalberg why he was even got a nomination is beyond me, he was what? 10 minutes screentime? arguing and starting fights?
@nunotraumas i totally agree with you. these oscars, they are projected internationally as the best platform to recognise america's talent and also the international talent, and what they mostly come up with is their studio films in mind and their monetary benefits, purely judging commercial basis. at least for once, they should acknowledge the talent in film making for the sake of it only.
@Bartsudz99 exactly, he should have been nominated for the fighter, he embodied that character so well. but here in this nomination, he should have not even been there at the first place.
I enjoyed all of the nominees performances, however, Jackie Earle Haley's performance in "Little Children" was chilling, disturbing, emotional, and memorable. My Best Supporting Actor in the field.
@MrMoviebuff5000 Definitely. I think any one could have won, despite Murphy being the prohibitive favorite. And I think Eddie Murphy could have won if he did some different films BEFORE Norbit. If he had never done either Nutty Professor movie or Pluto Nash, who knows how he could have turned out.
@KellyGreen5555 it was rude, it showed he was a bad sport, but i did feel sorry for him, he had months of hype saying he was deffo going to win and to have it won by arkin, thats a kick in the teeth ,
