must be nice to live in California. free raw food in PA is unheard of. we do have some corn, and peppers in the summer. but farmers charge out the ass for them. time to move!
@kranca1000 Definitey not ripe if they did that. In the colder states we get the ones that are picked off of the tree and are left to ripen at the store. They take weeks... Wait until they are so soft that they are bursting. Then enjoy! The flatter oranger variety you can eat before they are soft.
@eagleheartsong I made this same error when I became inpatient waiting for mine to properly ripen. Definitey not ripe if they did that. In the colder states we get the ones that are picked off of the tree and are left to ripen at the store. They take weeks... Wait until they are so soft that they are bursting. Then enjoy! The flatter orange variety you can eat before they are soft.
Heck with free! I would PAY to get some good fresh sweet juicy ripe fruit! I can't even get good bananas right now for some reason. I have 5 bunches sitting on my counter, but none of them are ready to eat yet! It's crazy! Not sure what's going on! I live in northern Ohio and we're in winter, but that shouldn't have anything to do with bananas being ripe. Ugh...
yo i heard u all eat fruits and vegetables so I have an idea to put together a co-op fruit and vegetable farm so we can have fruits and vegetables while we eat fruits and vegetables. whos with me
Well there's a huge mismatch... Dan McDonald walking down the street and comes across a persimmon tree with a sign on the door saying free persimmons take as many as you want.
This summer I was out for a walk and happened upon a plum tree, and the old man across the road shouted that I could have as many as I like, so I picked a bagful.
I also got tons of free blackberries and mullberries from the edge of a school playground when it was empty for summer break.
I just seen this on the news tonight. Boy Paula Dean keep a tight lip and raked in a bunch of bank before letting this tidbit of information get out to the public. Maybe getting hit in the face with a ham, on film ... which went viral, was karma at play.
Lovely! There is supposedly a Hachiya Persimmon tree near where I work...I may investigate soon. Just made my first "Lemon Ginger Blast," and it is divine. Thanks Dan!
yeah baby. Free persimmons in Santa Rosa. I found two different folks around town that put out signs on their persimmon trees saying "help yourself." BTW, the Hachiya ones freeze really well, then thaw a bit and you have persimmon sherbert...also they are incredible dried.
@writerightnow WOW. Well i live in new england where a lot of apples are grown so i suppose thats why they are "cheaper". Im spending ridiculous amounts of my income since adopting a vegan diet. Food is like 2 or 3 times more expensive than "food" ive been finding out. Kinda scary to think well then what the hell was i eating before that it was 1/3 of the price? A little bit of food with a bunch of buffers i suppose. Companies cut and lace their food like drug dealers dont they.
How cool you got them for free! What were the odds, you a known Persimmon lover, would go there? LOA in action. Don't think we have those in New England, never saw one, have never tasted one.
This makes me miss my granny in southern Cali. Her yard is full of fruit trees. But instead of eating all that raw gold, my siblings and I would have huge fruit fights and would slingshot fruit up into the eucalyptus trees. Man, I wish I knew then what I know now...
If you want free fruit, you can put an ad on craigslist in the "wanted" section under "For Sale" and ask if anyone has extra fruit from their trees. Right now is citrus season in California and the trees in my neighborhood are LOADED with fruit. You can also look in the "Free" section and you'll see ads there of people giving out free fruit. Most people will say, "If you pick it, you can have it!" Be sure to keep their name and address and ask again next year too!
PS: no wonder people are so healthy in CA. You're surrounded by fresh fruit and veggies all year round and it's inexpensive and sometimes even free. Crazy. I am so jealous.
i'm gonna move to California. Persimons, lemons and all those fruits are ridiculously expensive here in Maryland. And you got all this for FREE? That's hundreds of dollars worth of fruit here in MD.
lucky you dan! i want to move somewhere where people are more generous with their fruit trees. we can get free packaged processed boxed up foodstuffs, but fresh fruit is mostly wasted. so sad.
@interraciallove yes, you have the correct pronunciation, the accent is on the 2nd syllable not the first, and an FYI: "as your saying it" is spelled "you're", the contraction for "you are" not "your" (the most misspelled contraction in America...) We all need a little help from our friends...

I love this fruit too.. i had it for breakfast today.. my energy booster..
it's funny that in Japanese it's called kaki while in Malay it's called Pisang Kaki
But the funniest of all when you translate the word to english it's called - Banana(Pisang) Leg (Kaki)
I just found it amusing...
