The problem with that sentiment is that democracy involves EVERYONE having a say in what happens, not a good idea when most people are so ignorant. So what's the result? The majority victimizes the minority. Two wolves and a sheep have a democratic vote on what's for dinner. Not gonna be a good day for the sheep. That's why the USA was founded as a rebublic, NOT A DEMOCRACY.
@YourEyeWitness True is what you said. But my point is, we need a kind of ideology with a lot of democratic elements. The power should be diveded between a ruler, a council of the smartest people from that state, and only in some cases, between the people also. When it comes to voting, the decision of the ruler is taken as 35% of votes, the decision of the council as 65%. When the people are also included, the power of the council is of 30% and the decision of the people is taken as 35%
@YourEyeWitness I hope you understand my idea.. Neither a ruler to own all the power is not good, neither the power to be owned by the masses! The council of which I speak of should have th eright to propose everything, debate that, and vote alongside ruler. If the ruler say NO, his decision is taken as 35% of all votes. I hope you understand my idea :)
@YourEyeWitness Actually I disagree with that analogy What happens when the sheep is gone? Which wolf is going to vote to eat the other the next night? Democracy is the only way to stop the few from oppressing the many. Most people would not vote fore unjust laws because it could easily be turned around on them afterwords. And people( as a general rule) are selfish so they wont vote to take others things (unless that person has given that good cause to do it) for it could be turned on them.
You have way more faith than I in the ability of "the people" to make smart, informed decisions. I look at the effects of letting the vast majority of "the people" vote and see a Whitehouse, Capitol building, state and local government buildings overwhelmingly filled with corrupt politicians in the pockets of foreign and corporate interests. At least 95% of voters are too uninformed, apathetic, unvigilant and easily manipulated by the media to make good decisions in the voting booth.
@YourEyeWitness Because a republic where only land-owning white men can have a say totally fixes that problem. This is evidenced by how amazingly "everyone else" has been treated throughout American history.
I'm not saying race or personal wealth should be deciding factors in who votes. But the ignorant shouldn't be allowed to vote, they don't have the discernment to choose a proper representative and hold them accountable. And there are way too many ignorant voters these days. Now how can we go about weeding out the ignorant from being able to cast ballots? I have no earthly idea.
@YourEyeWitness How about we spend more money on education so that we don't go back 200 years and disenfranchise large numbers of people. The work of removing the ignorant is already done: they don't register to vote, let alone actually go to the polls.
Plenty of ignorant people still vote, as evidenced my the majority of voters still buying into the two party system as being legitimately viable and unable to see they are just picking between of two corporate and foreign-interest controlled puppets. Improving education is definitely needed, but depending on our government to improve education is not the answer. Government run schools are doing a terrible job educating our youth compared to the rest of the industrialized world.

@YourEyeWitness Actually, the terms republic (from Latin: res publica = people's matter/state) and democracy (from Greek: demos krateo = people's rule) mean basically the same thing. They both imply that decisions are made by (the majority of) the people. In practice, this is usually carried out indirectly by electing a government. Yet another reason why your two-party system with Democrats and Republicans is such a joke.
@YourEyeWitness Eh, could you please tell me what defines a republic? Wouldn't you say France is a democracy? Germany? Switzerland? They are also republics. On the contrary, friend: What "went down hard" were the people who based their lives on the free market system. The repeal of Glas Speigel among other others was the death knell, I'm afraid. The electorate may be uncomfortable with perceived "Socialism" to an extent, but those with any amount of historical perspective and intellectual acumen do not buy that argument. The political pendulum swings to and fro...
@nutterbee Thanks -- just what the hell are you trying to say? Or are you a double-talker like the current weasel in the White House? Plain talk is appreciated.

I don't think it is sarcastic. Never was a perfect union, to say the least. Melting pot, hell, it ain't even a good tossed salad. But it's coming. @MKFaizi Good thoughts. People aren't perfect, so what should we expect? Free, responsible people, respecting each others God-given rights, are the patriotic descendents of our founding fathers and mothers. And they'd better be ready to defend those rights from all the spawn of the Devil lurking out there, of which there are are a multitude.
Cohen nails it!!! The USA is not a democracy, nor is it a republic. An OILgarchic Kleptocracy is what it is. I intentionally misspelled Oligarchy - ya get it? If you disagree with me why don't you just leave the country - go to Russia or something. (A joke, ya get it?)
OH my God- "Tienamen Square" and there it is~! A guy on his bike! I always wondered- during that whole mass melee, so near yet so far away- where did all those students lock up their bikes?
Leonard Cohen is a true mystic poet and seer (whether consciously or not), and this is a classic Maskil, i.e. 'for initiates' per Psalms. It is actually a warning in mystic ambiguity; helps if one knows history ("The Future" on the same album is the key). Listen carefully & then look up why the Founders chose a Republic to protect rights and freedom ("If you can keep it", as Franklin said). "Democracy passes into despotism."- Plato
This is the song that got me in to Leonard Cohen. I was watching his performance in London and this song was played. It blew me away. The backing singers he had also helped ;-)
This guy is correct, there is no democarcy in America, its just an illusion of democracy. America is going from freedom to facism, you just run a background check on all presedents that came after Jhon F Kennedy, they are all in same league.
Sorry but I am prohibited from providing you all the details.

To JohnGaltPodcast Sometimes the "chilli side of the cave" may be a better option (not only for lazy once), It may offer a clean air, free of exployding. By the way, how doing with your million dollar book? We need roads to be fixed quick.
They don't make music like this anymore. The man is a true artist. A poet, a musician. All the mainstream shit today can go fuck itself in the ear, it swiftly fades beneth the might of Cohen. Rock on man
@KyuubiShadow1 How old are you? 12? 16? 22? just guessing...maybe a home schooling wiil do you good, if it is not to late for your skills of comprehaning..
As long as the average shmoe continues listening to news propaganda, things will never change. Anytime "regulations" are brought up as a solution, the corporate media begins their manipulation, tricking the average shome into believing his FREEDOMS will vanish with the regulations. In reality, it's the big coporate freedoms that will be diminished, not the average shmoe...
You can still have your individual freedoms under socialism. It's the corporate freedoms that will be restricted.
Socialism doesn't just restrict corporate freedoms. It restricts personal ones, such as the right to keep what one earns. Socialist systems do NOT just tax corporations.
I'm a professional writer. If I write a book tomorrow that makes me a million dollars, I have a right to that money. I'm willing to have a small amount taken out for very select government programs (roads, military, etc.), but beyond that, it's MY money. It's not the government's wealth to parcel out at their discretion.
@JohnGaltPodcast You do not know a lot about socializm, do you. As a writer it will be to your advantage to get all facts about the system. I wish you luck with your million dollars book, and I hope you got to keep ALL your money, is it not what capitalism is all about...screw the rest..
Yes, I know quite a bit about socialism, including the aspect of it that seems to be eluding YOU: how to spell the damned word. In fact, I've spent the last twenty-odd years studying it, which is why I'm so convinced of its deadly nature.
As far as "screw the rest," you seem to be under the impression that the success of one person has to mean the failure of another. There can be endless wealth to go around. The trick is not to bring down those with wealth; it's to raise up those without it.
Actually, I'd assume that stone age man wasn't a socialist, as he probably wouldn't let the lazy folks in his tribe coast while he had to go out and bring home some meat. They'd find themselves on the chilly side of the cave... ;)
@JohnGaltPodcast So you have started your study about socialism at age of 13. Wow, your IQ amazeses me. To have an interest in politics at that age, when your friends played video games, trying to win a fight against the evil. I am worrying about yourchoices of the carrier, writer is not what you should work on that hard. Politics, this is your field. Is it not obvious?
Uh, cloloma, I'm 46. And just so you know...my real name is not "John Galt Podcast"! I know it's hard to believe Mr. and Mrs. Podcast didn't name me that and all, but...
And no, when I was a teen-ager, I actually would've SUPPORTED socialism. Thank god for maturity...
@JohnGaltPodcast And what do you think is happening with "your" money right now? It is not parceled to government discretion? I think I gave you too much of the credit, sorry.
Yes, in fact, it IS doing that. And I'm not happy with much of that either. I'm willing to contribute to a limited number of public programs that are used or accessible to all (roads, police, military, etc.), but not the redistribution of wealth, no.
I'm all for freedom but the concept is not so simple. Just like everything else in life, when these freedoms are taken to the extreme, they become harmful. And that's what Karl Marx predicted with capitalism. End game capitalism would result in economic tyranny.
The accumulation of so much wealth in the hands of a few (even if it was attained honestly) is destroying our freedoms.
So Cohen supports Prop 8 in CA, which prohibits gay marriage? Because that's democracy in its purest form, a referendum, a simple majority vote. You'd think he'd prefer the representative republic we're supposed to be.
"Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual)." -Ayn Rand
A "blood line only" spiritual sect of jews, who are the religious teachers of judaism. Since they only interbreed, and NEVER with outsiders, they are very pure blood.
I only knwo 2 jews, and they look axactly like him - short, jet black hair, and an odd nose !
He also made a song called "first we take manhatten, then we take berlin",
The USA was once a Republic. "Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property, and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths." - James Madison. The USA no longer follows its Constitution. Over the last 80 years it slowly morphed into an Oligarchy under Fascism on the way to Socialism.
@Mike10four I would say we're not on our way to socialism but rather at corporatism which is living side by side with plutocracy. The last phase is a kleptocracy. This is a much worse situation. The enemy of the people of this country hasn't been other countries or even terrorists but the wealthy elites that we don't hear about in the corporate media. Who do you think promotes foreign wars and stirs up terrorists? There's money and control over the "commoners" in them thar weapons.
Fascists organize a nation on corporatist perspectives and controlling a market through regulations hence, your "corporatism" with "plutocracy" comment. The Socialism movement is when government owns corporations and wealth redistribution such as: GM, healthcare, Social Security, etc. The free market made USA great when the gov followed the Constitution. The USA cancer started in the Progressive living constitution era when Woodrow Willson joined the global banking system. Follow the money!
@Mike10four The US is not on the way to socialism, not even close to it, unless you believe that twit palin. If there is a path it could trudge on near, it is dictatorship.
The former republican admin showed ample similarities to third world dictatorship, but it will never reach there i think. When, if, push comes to shove, i believe the americans will realise the path they are onto & change course to safety.
@scherif70 Socialists advocate centrally planned economies directed by the state that owns the means of production. Americanism favors a free market economy with private ownership of production. The US oligarchy using "too big to fail" has transferred ownership from private to the state for some; this is a move towards Socialism.
As for changing course the US gov controls our school system where the study of Americanism is poor; and in saying that, what is our "course to safety?"
@Mike10four This is called liberalism, this is an ideology of equality of condition, not a socialist agenda. Furthermore American is the pinnacle of capitalism, which is an element of Socialism. As for the economy... laissez-faire.
I'm not denying that it sure looks like "socialism" in America, but remember. The government has a responsibility to its citizens. Like any responsibly government should: equality of condition.
As an academic, we do not talk about: politics, sex, or religion.
@MADHater01 You may be confusing equality in liberalism with egalitarianism. America was once the pinnacle of capitalism; today China is having our lunch; laissez-fair, the good old days. As for responsible government, we once had representation now a soft-tyranny. US academia is usually funded by the government - catering to the hand that feeds them; where many in the social sciences blame Liberty for social or economic problems; hence, the lack of Americanism in our school system.
@Pseudologic Socialism is not a concrete philosophy of fixed doctrine. There are many types of socialism from Henri de Saint-Simon to Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx. In my comment, I took Marx's model of centrally planned economies directed by the state who owns all means of production. Thanks for pointing this out.
@Pseudologic One may argue that state-planned economies within the broader term of Socialism had its roots from Marx's Planks: 6, 7, and 9. In any event, state-planned economies are more prevalent in Socialism compared to free market Capitalism.
@Mike10four No, that's the way Russia and China went, because they were also interested in eliminating burgeosie, or capitalists. It doesn't mean the US has to go the same way, it can choose Scandinavian models where company employees own the stock.
@Pseudologic The Scandinavian model?!? I disagree! The way the US has to go is back to its founding; for in just 233 years the US has changed the world like no other: society, country, or tribe in recorded history; advancing the state of the art through free market forces in: technology, food production, and medicine - the stables of human existence throughout the globe today.
@Mike10four The google model of society is a burgeoning one and is one of the few possible ways to fight a cyberpunk dystopian corporate fascism. There has to be a seamless integration of human worth with capitalism, and for the first time in history we are beginning to understand that and realize that there are ways to reduce the inevitable alienation that occurs within a capitalist system and stem the tide against oligarchy. Its about balance, we need to move away from binarist idiocy.
@Mike10four No, that's the way Russia and China went, because they were also interested in eliminating burgeosie, or capitalists. It doesn't mean the US has to go the same way, it can choose Scandinavian models where company employees own the stock.
@Mike10four Yes,And Leon Trotsky said basically the same thing."Perpetual revolution"Stalin liked that so much he had him killed with an axe to the head."Trot" means "in your face" so he took the name Trotsky, his real name Borenstein.
@rollokb2 Americanism has changed the world by one Nation in just 233 years like no other: society, country, or tribe in recorded history; advancing the state of the art through free market forces in: technology, food production, and medicine - the stables of human existence throughout the globe today. What did socialism do?
@Mike10four i think i told you perfect distillation of the moment is 3 parts lie and one part truth why so many lies well ill leave that to your eyes.
@TheFriedLiverAttack I'm not good in deciphering riddles. Please state what you are trying to say! If 500 characters are too short, please send me a youtube message.
@rollokb2 It's only bad if you have a lot of money that you made by exploiting workers. We have have reverse socialism the billionaires are bailed out by the workers. Remember they rich man who asked Jesus what he had to do to follow Him, He told the guy to sell his possessions and give to the poor. The rich guy didn't like that because he had a lot of stuff.

Obama is going down hard
He will not change a nation of people who based their lives on the free market to ones who embrace socialism.
nmud 1 year ago
On the contrary, friend: What "went down hard" were the people who based their lives on the free market system. The repeal of Glas Speigel among other others was the death knell, I'm afraid. The electorate may be uncomfortable with perceived "Socialism" to an extent, but those with any amount of historical perspective and intellectual acumen do not buy that argument. The political pendulum swings to and fro...

Historically Democracies do not end well. The American Republic was largely defeated in the decades following the Civil War.
A participatory Democratic Republic would be a good try - but gotta get rid of borrowing the people's own credit from private banking cartels !
I do think that this hurdle must be overcome for mankind to move forward again.

It's the corporate freedoms that will be restricted.
hospitalbedpan1 1 year ago
Socialism doesn't just restrict corporate freedoms. It restricts personal ones, such as the right to keep what one earns. Socialist systems do NOT just tax corporations.
I'm a professional writer. If I write a book tomorrow that makes me a million dollars, I have a right to that money. I'm willing to have a small amount taken out for very select government programs (roads, military, etc.), but beyond that, it's MY money. It's not the government's wealth to parcel out at their discretion.
JohnGaltPodcast 1 year ago
@JohnGaltPodcast You do not know a lot about socializm, do you. As a writer it will be to your advantage to get all facts about the system. I wish you luck with your million dollars book, and I hope you got to keep ALL your money, is it not what capitalism is all about...screw the rest..
cloloma 1 year ago
Yes, I know quite a bit about socialism, including the aspect of it that seems to be eluding YOU: how to spell the damned word. In fact, I've spent the last twenty-odd years studying it, which is why I'm so convinced of its deadly nature.
As far as "screw the rest," you seem to be under the impression that the success of one person has to mean the failure of another. There can be endless wealth to go around. The trick is not to bring down those with wealth; it's to raise up those without it.
JohnGaltPodcast 1 year ago
What he describes is more akin to capitalism then socialism...'you have to lose money for me to earn it'...stone age thinking at its worst
And as for him being a writer....I bet he couldn't write a plot to save his life
Dalbert342 1 year ago
Actually, I'd assume that stone age man wasn't a socialist, as he probably wouldn't let the lazy folks in his tribe coast while he had to go out and bring home some meat. They'd find themselves on the chilly side of the cave... ;)
JohnGaltPodcast 1 year ago
@JohnGaltPodcast So you have started your study about socialism at age of 13. Wow, your IQ amazeses me. Dalbert342 1 year ago
@JohnGaltPodcast And what do you think is happening with "your" money right now? It is not parceled to government discretion? I think I gave you too much of the credit, sorry.
cloloma 1 year ago
Yes, in fact, it IS doing that. And I'm not happy with much of that either. I'm willing to contribute to a limited number of public programs that are used or accessible to all (roads, police, military, etc.), but not the redistribution of wealth, no.
JohnGaltPodcast 1 year ago
I'm all for freedom but the concept is not so simple. Just like everything else in life, when these freedoms are taken to the extreme, they become harmful. And that's what Karl Marx predicted with capitalism. End game capitalism would result in economic tyranny.
The accumulation of so much wealth in the hands of a few (even if it was attained honestly) is destroying our freedoms.
hospitalbedpan1 1 year ago 2
So Cohen supports Prop 8 in CA, which prohibits gay marriage? Because that's democracy in its purest form, a referendum, a simple majority vote. You'd think he'd prefer the representative republic we're supposed to be.
"Individual rights are not subject to a public vote; a majority has no right to vote away the rights of a minority; the political function of rights is precisely to protect minorities from oppression by majorities (and the smallest minority on earth is the individual)." -Ayn Rand

AnnoyingTypoSyndrome 1 year ago
@Mike10four I would say we're not on our way to socialism but rather at corporatism which is living side by side with plutocracy. The last phase is a kleptocracy. This is a much worse situation. The enemy of the people of this country hasn't been other countries or even terrorists but the wealthy elites that we don't hear about in the corporate media. Who do you think promotes foreign wars and stirs up terrorists? There's money and control over the "commoners" in them thar weapons.
CaptHiltz 1 year ago
Fascists organize a nation on corporatist perspectives and controlling a market through regulations hence, your "corporatism" with "plutocracy" comment. The Socialism movement is when government owns corporations and wealth redistribution such as: GM, healthcare, Social Security, etc. The free market made USA great when the gov followed the Constitution. The USA cancer started in the Progressive living constitution era when Woodrow Willson joined the global banking system. Follow the money!
Mike10four 1 year ago
@Mike10four The US is not on the way to socialism, not even close to it, unless you believe that twit palin. If there is a path it could trudge on near, it is dictatorship.
The former republican admin showed ample similarities to third world dictatorship, but it will never reach there i think. When, if, push comes to shove, i believe the americans will realise the path they are onto & change course to safety.
scherif70 1 year ago 2
@scherif70 Socialists advocate centrally planned economies directed by the state that owns the means of production. Americanism favors a free market economy with private ownership of production. The US oligarchy using "too big to fail" has transferred ownership from private to the state for some; this is a move towards Socialism.
As for changing course the US gov controls our school system where the study of Americanism is poor; and in saying that, what is our "course to safety?"
Mike10four 1 year ago
@Mike10four This is called liberalism, this is an ideology of equality of condition, not a socialist agenda. Furthermore American is the pinnacle of capitalism, which is an element of Socialism. As for the economy... laissez-faire.
I'm not denying that it sure looks like "socialism" in America, but remember. The government has a responsibility to its citizens. Like any responsibly government should: equality of condition.
As an academic, we do not talk about: politics, sex, or religion.
MADHater01 1 year ago
@MADHater01 You may be confusing equality in liberalism with egalitarianism. America was once the pinnacle of capitalism; today China is having our lunch; laissez-fair, the good old days. As for responsible government, we once had representation now a soft-tyranny. US academia is usually funded by the government - catering to the hand that feeds them; where many in the social sciences blame Liberty for social or economic problems; hence, the lack of Americanism in our school system.
Mike10four 1 year ago
@Mike10four Socialism doesn't mean the state owns the means the production, but the workers do. Big difference.
Pseudologic 1 year ago
@Pseudologic Socialism is not a concrete philosophy of fixed doctrine. There are many types of socialism from Henri de Saint-Simon to Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx. In my comment, I took Marx's model of centrally planned economies directed by the state who owns all means of production. Thanks for pointing this out.
Mike10four 1 year ago
@Mike10four No he never said that. You're mixing up state-planned economy with the broader term of socialism.
Pseudologic 1 year ago
@Pseudologic One may argue that state-planned economies within the broader term of Socialism had its roots from Marx's Planks: 6, 7, and 9. In any event, state-planned economies are more prevalent in Socialism compared to free market Capitalism.

Pseudologic 1 year ago
@Pseudologic The Scandinavian model?!? I disagree! The way the US has to go is back to its founding; for in just 233 years the US has changed the world like no other: society, country, or tribe in recorded history; advancing the state of the art through free market forces in: technology, food production, and medicine - the stables of human existence throughout the globe today.

@Mike10four So reinstate slavery and use horses to move around?
Pseudologic 1 year ago
@Mike10four The google model of society is a burgeoning one and is one of the few possible ways to fight a cyberpunk dystopian corporate fascism. There has to be a seamless integration of human worth with capitalism, and for the first time in history we are beginning to understand that and realize that there are ways to reduce the inevitable alienation that occurs within a capitalist system and stem the tide against oligarchy. Its about balance, we need to move away from binarist idiocy.
