I watched it all on a live stream as cops and sanitation workers dismantled tents, destroyed furniture, and threw personal belongings amidst a pile of wreckage. @usaf317 I was born poor too. My family did not even have plumbing. I paid for my school with a combat tour in Iraq. I busted my ass in undergrad and got a 3.93 GPA and scholarships. I too have busted my ass and worked hard for what I have, much harder than almost everyone I meet. But at the end of the day, I was helped my programs such as the GI Bill and scholarships. Such programs are integral to helping talented people like you and I escape poverty and become something.

@usaf317 What is "compensation" and what is a "handout" is a social construction. If we were to build a time machine, we could go back to WWI when US veterans were the ones protesting. They fought in WWI but received little to no benefit from the government. At the time, people might have said they wanted "handouts." Federal troops even cleared them out with force; some were killed. After WWII the gov did not want to see a repeat of this and the GI Bill was born... thru advocacy and protest.
