i confirm!! she is not indian!!! but she is mixed Malaysian,,,- born in Münster, Germany...the daughter of a Malaysian mother Fatimah Rohani and an Indo-Fijian father Pramod Tikaram...;-)
This song has haunted me all my life, but I have no fucking idea why? I don't know what it means... If anybody can elaborate for an ignorant cunt like myself I'd b grateful...
Мне все равно! Fine artist & a great song (albeit a tad obscure). There's too little Tanita Tikaram stuff on YouTube (especially from the album "The Sweet Keeper" which is my personal favourite).
How would you guys interpret the lyrics of the song. I know that there are lots of hidden meanings in this text. Could you suggest me an article about this song? I am just wondering what was the thing that provoked her making this song the way it is. I mean is there an article that gives some more information about the song. I would love to know...
There is an interview for TV4 with Tanita on youtube in which they ask her about it. She says the song is about "how it was difficult to react to things that you felt you were really always unable to react", and about having no conscience and being "slightly immoral". Many years ago she said in an interview that while writing the song she was very much influenced by Larkin's poem "Poetry of Departures".
Thanks! SO MUCH! hey I am writing an essay about this song, I am not a big fan of Tanita but she wrote such a beautiful song that and I just wanted to get everything out of it, you know...I am still putting it into text... thanks braathens75 I really appreciate it! GREETING Anatoliy
Larkin's poem is about a person who lives a very orderly life, but s/he is aware that it is not necessary to live it this way, and this awareness lets him stay "sober and industrious". Google "Poetry of Departures"; it's too long to post it here.
Or I'll post it here piece by piece: Philip Larkin Poetry Of Departures Sometimes you hear, fifth-hand, As epitaph: He chucked up everything And just cleared off, And always the voice will sound Certain you approve This audacious, purifying, Elemental move.
Great Song

(2) And they are right, I think.
We all hate home
And having to be there:
I detest my room,
It's specially-chosen junk,
The good books, the good bed,
And my life, in perfect order:
So to hear it said
braathens75 4 years ago
(3) He walked out on the whole crowd
Leaves me flushed and stirred,
Like Then she undid her dress
Or Take that you bastard;
Surely I can, if he did?
And that helps me to stay
Sober and industrious.
But I'd go today,
braathens75 4 years ago
(4) Yes, swagger the nut-strewn roads,
Crouch in the fo'c'sle
Stubbly with goodness, if
It weren't so artificial,
Such a deliberate step backwards
To create an object:
Books; china; a life
Reprehensibly perfect.

My compliments to translator,he must be a really gifted person. If you think otherwise-try by yourself, and I'll read it with pleasure :)
