the commodore that killed holden for me, the day they stopped making their own motors. They should have continued to develop the 202, just imagine it if it was around today with alloy heads, larger bore and amazing fuel injection. /sigh/ wishes.
@Paiste402 did they not make the motors for the VN till VX?? they made the 3.8 buick styled engine for their cars untill the 3.6 hfv6 alloytech? therefore it was the VZ that ruined holden, and the VL was just a speedbump because of those emissions from leaded petrol or something like that.
No way, its a buick motor merely built in australia. If anything the Holden variant made the buick worse, it put out less power and not as reliable as the US equivalent. Serious, holden died with the VL commodore then it opened the flood gates for the same idea. Along came the VT series 2 and then the aussie 5.0 V8 left as well ending any real Holden motors.
@Paiste402 actualy the 3.8 buick in the VN commodore had 15 more kilowatts (125 kw) than in the pontiac bonneville that used the same motor and 19 more kilowatts than in the buick riviera. unfortunately they now use the hfv6 and the l98 and the l76 8's. holdens may have died to some extent. but they still produce solid good looking vehicles
sure they still make some good looking solid cars but they are no longer the Australian pioneers of cars making original machines, they are merely a GM dealer now days with even the commodore being vastly designed overseas and such. But thats just how the world is nowdays :(
@Paiste402 yes its said the path that Holden was taken down, if only it could have stayed Australian owned. it disgusts me to see holders with pontiac fronts and the americans calling our amazing monaros pontiac gtos. worst of all the money goes to the yanks aswell
dude i FULLY agree, and all the little poofters around with fucking chevy badges on all their commodores. Ive even seen them on V6 VR's! Holden gets no credit for the monaro and commodore around the world, its all pontiacs and vauxhalls iIts all fucked now days, thats why ive moved to ford to be honest. No one tried to badge it as something else and imo they are now a better australian car.
@Paiste402 I disgaree, the VE was the first Commodore compltetly designed in Australia...all others from VB onwards were designed by GM/Opel in Europe and originally sold as a Opel Rekord. Hell I was in the UK in 2006 and saw Vaushall Omega (yes hence the reference in the current Commodore Omega) which side on was exactly the same as a VY Commo. So it never really was an all Aussie car....sure we tweeked it here but it was designed elsewhere. Now us Aussies have designed the VE, Camaro, etc
The alloytec motor tho? thats just a GM platform engine same with the 6.2 litre v8's. Look, im just trying to say they arent 100% aussie no more. The falcon still uses an Aussie straight 6 only found here at least. Shame cause all the engines us aussies made and make are brilliant, its a dying breed
close, it had slightly more power than the stock "black" V8 but the V8 did create more torque. The walkinshaw had a bit more power than the turbo cause of its EFI that had just released for the holden 8.
it'd be interesting to put the 2 .... no actually all 3 of them, the "black" V8 + the turbo + the Walkinshaw to see how they compare against each other .... because the turbo would be a tad lighter wouldn't it, not having the extra 2 cylinders and such
Thats a stupid theory. Its like saying a 2 cylinder engine is more powerful than the 6 cause its got 4 less cylinders and is MUCH lighter. Those 2 extra cylinders in the V8 are makin power mate, not just movin up n down. (the Veyrons W16 motor? too heavy?) U know the RB30 was a soggy engine without the turbo, and with the turbo its a normal RB30 until the turbo spools up. N/A V8 for the win, cause they have instant power and bogans cant afford them and ruin them.
vl commodores geting to old to do stuff with any way but still like them as a car i this wood be a waist of time but i wood love to get a RB26 engen out of a R34 GTR and put it in the vl if it fits be nice but
You all want to know a funny thing, I was looking in an auto trader magazine & this guy had a clean & original VL Calais sedan with the natrually aspired straight six with 180,000km on the clock for $6700, now this other guy was selling an HDT Brock Nitron Commodore clean & original with only 150,000km on the clock & he was selling for $8250!!! But one thing is for sure, the VL's are the quickest apreciating of all the Commodore models because everyone knows & loves them so keep your VL original
hey..in s1 vls they dont have a plug on the side of the block for the oil preasure so that means u cant turbo s1 blocks....and s2 have the plug in the side of the block so yeah i hope u know now mate
im sure most people realize that the commodore motor is european but the commodore is australian and u dont not fuck with aussies with their favourite car wether it be falcon or commodore
lol well u dont know shit do u lol holden built the 308 and the 350 comes from the us the inline 6 came from nissan the 3.8v6 came from buick and the alloytec is from holden lmao wtf are u on
Thanks Inarapsag1 for agreeing with the Opel commodore info I have posted, I actually like the FC and EK Holdens and the HK Monaro too!, just wonder how many people knew about the Opel/Commodore set up? I didn't expect some people to take it personally, and type insults and use bad language, and yes I know Jaguars rep for electrics etc , I have read alot about them and electrics in the Jaguar XJ6 I have are fine.
If you want to see where "Commodores" originated type in "opel" rekord or "opel" senator in google and you will then believe what people are saying about the lies told to the Australian publis in regrd to Holden being "Ausie" cars, they fooled me too! interestingly Opel had cars that look like the "HD Holden and the HK Monaro! too! Abmessungen: 0mm x 0mm x 0mm (L*B*H) Radstand: 0mm Code:
Although very little originated from Holden, it remains one of the best Commodores of all, as so often happens when you mix up the gene pool.
The VL Commodore started life as a mid-1970s Opel Rekord -- not the similar-looking and larger six-cylinder Opel Senator -- powered by a 2.0-litre four. All 1979-88 Commodores shared the four-cylinder Rekord's rear suspension and short wheelbase with stretched bonnets to house big six-cylinder engines.
OK to everyone that is saying that all holdens are from germany or whatever, show me a vl commodore or calais with an opel or any other badge besides holden on it. infact show me a photo of a vl in ANY other county besides Aust.
By this stage, Holden's 30 year old six-cylinder was thoroughly outmoded and would have been difficult to modify to comply with pending emission standards and unleaded fuel. This led Holden to sign a deal with Nissan to import their RB30E engine.[22] This seemed a good idea in 1983 and the body was OPEL GM about as Ausie as a BIg mac with Jap french fries and a German thick shake!
Premiering in 1978 the Holden VB Commodore brought unprecedented levels of refinement, never seen before in an Australian designed car.
At the urging of GM headquarters, Holden looked towards Opel for providing the foundations of the VB basing it on the four-cylinder Rekord E bodyshell but with the front grafted on from the Opel Senator to accommodate the larger V8 engines
All the Commodores are "German GM Opel" look up Opel and you will see the Commodore! exactly as it is in Australia only it was "Designed :" in germany! and Holden took out the Rear independent suspension off and replaced it with out dated HQ rear live axle!
funny how they can compare a calais to eurpoean cars...calais has no hope of even coming close to the quality of european cars...
Also how can Australia be proud of a car with a japanese motor? All the people driving these cars bagging supra/skyline drivers calling them "rice", take a look in the mirror, your "ricers" aswell ;)
yeah, I like japanese cars not australian ones because they have better build quality. I like how ive never broken down or had any leaks in my Honda. It is quick and gets great fuel economy, without having a huge engine. I used to own an australian car and it did nothing to sway me into buying another one.
wth man you don't know what Changi is? - Jeez man that's a large part of our military history. There's a chance some of your relatives were kept there (one of mine was) - look it up.
Yeah, 4 thousand dollars in repairs and servicing in twelve months on a 7 year old Calais is not any recommendation from me. Will never buy a nissan product again. (Except N13, as they are GM powered, and a great car)
the reason these shitboxes actually sold was because bogans all got jobs at the ipswich meatworks and they then went straight to the bank to get a loan and then put a sticker on the back window - if its a male bogans car it will say "if im going to hell im going in a holden" and if it is a female bogans car it will be "pshyco bitch" or something along those lines.
what is funny is when bogans have a vl with an rb30 in it and they put hsv stickers all over it and wear hsv jackets when they are running a jap engine.
So what dickhead? Did the Japs invent the reciprocating engine?..no! Every car on the road has an engine that was invented in Germany. You fucking clown!

The 6 and 8 pre VL were both Australian
The 6 post VL and pre VY (buick/ecotec) is American, the 8 from VTII on is American (well GM Global but basically American)
The Alloytec 6 is GM Global with a large design input from Holden and built in Australia...
