the sound example is perfect enough for me I can tell exactly what Im hearing and what Im not hearing.. developed hearing while trying to not be a d*ck
I had my Silver Face retro fit to a Black Face configuration with great results. It doesn't take much (actually most of the changes involve removing things...) to do.
Worth it of you look at what a Black Face is worth.
Hate being a dick about this, but I find the sound in this video about as useful as an mp3 of the mona lisa. For a viewer to make any sort of valid comparison the amps should be micd. Camcorder mic just doesn't cut it.
I dont think so, cause even if they´re micd teh sound will pass trough the camera´s mic, think bout this. We can diferentiate quite wel the tones of both amps..
@bilbomarks Hate being a dick about this, but it doesn't seem like you know much about "using your ear". You don't need to mic these amps to hear the difference. If you can't split the sounds up then you must be a rookie. Now go buy yourself a 100 watt solid state amp and get a modern day Blues Blaster.....that'll fix ya right up.....rookie
God, both sound like Heaven to me. I lean towards the silver face. I wonder if it was a blind test if the vintage crowd would still prefer the blackface?
i have a 1972 silver face a lil rusty though but black face still kicks butt i love vintage tube amps if u plug ur microphone into the first imput jack u get a cleaner sound
These silver-face Fenders are classics, and are in fact US made, hand-wired, authentic vintage gems. They sound *good*! We need to stop comparing them directly to their earlier black-face cousins and begin to see them as the unique instances of classic amps that they are. For God's sake, The Beatles used silver-faced Twins for their last public appearance. I own a '74 Twin and '78 Vibrolux Reverb and I wouldn't part with either, for any amount of money, because they give me good tone.
Both sound great, but the blackface sounds a little greater. It's just got more of "that" sound.
BTW, for someone just learning harp, who is the best player to listen to? For guitar I think Freddy King is best for beginners -- you can learn all the essential licks from him. Who is the Freddy King of harmonica?
Also, what is a good entry level mic? Are there any new inexpensive ones that can get you, say, 80% of the tone of a classic mic?
is this bad for guitar amps/ the speakers they use? i mean... i guess not because you're playing through them right before my eyes, im just really reluctant to put a mic in front of guitar amps. could i play a harmonica through a JTM45 with 2X12 inch 30 watt speakers?
thats funny because they are modded fender, and firstly marshall was made for every instruments like microphone, harp, guitar, bass... direct competitor of vox. same thing with mesa and fender but mesa became better quality amp after fender was sold.
I'd take the Blackface over the Silverface any day of the week. The Blackface sounds warmer and more powerful. The Silverface registers in my mind as "shrill" in comparison.
I was at a demo/masterclass by Lee Oskar in a music store in Toronto about 10 years ago. He was showing how he used guitar effects pedals to get different sounds. He had a few there & one allowed him to sound just like a Jamaican steel drum. Have you ever tried anything like that? He was encouraging people to experiment.
the blck label Shure element is a great element but not for all amps, mostly bigger amps sounding better, for small amps i use mostly Astatic elements
silverface sounds good with the harmonica and the blackface sounds good with guitars

@mrawesome3351 thats my trick, just a joke, if you turn up these amps just before feedback they are great for harmonica playing
