  • @martinriu TO THE EXTREME!!!!

  • Lord lord lord! This is amazing!

  • time signature?

  • @whogotdubs 12/8 ?

  • @whogotdubs 6/4

  • @martinriu same thing :)

  • @martinriu I honestly don't understand the difference with 6/4 and 12/8. It's the same fraction right? Does it have something to do with the tempo? I don't know much about music theory so that's why I'm asking.

  • @ufowam

It has to do with the grouping of the subdivisions -

    12/8 implies a rhythm that outlines 4 sets of three 8th notes(quavers).

but in this song, the basic rhythm set is a full phrase of 6 solid downbeats, so it makes more sense to count it out as six quarter notes (crochets) that subdivide further.

If you require more clarity on my explanation, it helps to count the beat out as you listen to the music. A more experienced musician counting beside you may help greatly too.

  • Awww man this song is smoooooth

  • we saw her at the Philly Art Museum... she was amazing! Thanks for posting this.

  • Thats not Aaron Parks it's Robert Glasper dude fix it lol! This is beast. I bought the album after hearing my friend playing this lol

  • @standrick Aaron Parks is playing fender rhodes. gretchen parlato and robert glasper arranged it together.

  • ...i head this in a record store today and IMMEDIATLY bought the cd...her voice is so smooth and Robert...WHEW!!!!! He's a beast for this arrangement...

  • This cover is so amazing - the arrangement, her singing and the playing - I keep coming back to it. I just soars... whew!

  • Everyone here is wrong. The song is in 6/4 and the bridge is in 3/4. Trust me. I transcribed it and posted my chart on Youtube. Shortly thereafter, I was contacted by Gretchen's manager Karen Kennedy, Gretchen, and Robert Glasper (arranger) and they threatened to sue me. I was told that chart was accurate... too accurate to post. It scared them.

  • All I can said is this cats are awesome.

  • @cafelatte06 Vous parlez français?

Si oui, vous voudriez dire "All I can say is these cats are awesome."

Est-ce que ma française correcte aussi?

  • @CaptianItalian11 No hablo frances soy mejicano no se mucho inglis pero gracias por la corecion.

  • the first words say it all ... i don't know what to say ... well, just this ... these guys are getting so close to burst the balloon of anything ... you know when you blow up a balloon just right to the bursting point ... right to the edge ... this music makes me fly ...

  • This song switches between: 6/4 and 6/8 :)

  • @datramte this is counted in 12 ! no one establishes the "1" until after 12 sorry i beg to differ

  • vibN!

  • @datramte The song is in 2/4 up until 1:40, where it changes to 3/4. Then it goes back to 2 at 1:55. The reason you're all are coming up with different beats and having trouble putting a definite meter is because the keyboardist is phrasing in 12, and the drummer in 8. All except for the 3/4 area of course.

  • @pushit234

Ya, i think you're right- the drummers doing something 4/8-ish to the Rhodes' 12/8, changing chords every 3 eighth notes.

  • 6/4 fits best. Fact. 3/4 is OK but then you have the snare -- which is supposed to be acting as the back-beat -- playing beat 1 of every second bar during the verse. 4/4 is too far a stretch and contains too many qualifiers (i.e., 12 bar phrases... the chord changes repeat every bar and a half... it only works for the verses... etc...).

  • Aurgasmic! need i say more?

  • Wow this is ridiculous! Ingenious arrangement, great musicians and I'm loving everything Gretchen sings! She's so addicting!

  • @paulmarado Man a waste man innit.

  • With regards to the time, it is in 4/4 but with an unusual form, the phrases are 12 bars each.

  • @doenen I'm feeling a 3/4 meter all the way through the entire tune.

  • love it..

  • OMGGGGGGGGGGG....Phresh Air...Pure Phresh Air

  • Loved it!

  • @shamkim thanks man really i aprreciate it

  • in awwwwww

  • you are very sweetly and casually fucking me in the ear

  • @Rambonbon yeah me too. im deeply aroused.

  • Love this song!!

  • does anyone know that chords to this song?

  • @MrCed001 basic verse chords.. Dmaj/F#, G-, A-, D-9, Ebmaj7.. E-7, B-9, Bbmaj, G-

  • Good musicians! Excelent !

  • drums sound like mr weckl sometimes lol

  • The tune is in 4/4, the bridge and the section after the second bridge is in 3/4, and there is no metric modulation in the tune.

  • @HoramaPhone You quite about that?

  • @HoramaPhone

Wrong its in 6/4. The chorus and bridge are both 3/4.

  • @phattline You are correct with regard to the chorus and bridge but the verses are absolutely in 4/4.

  • Thank You....From Mike Jackson,Jodeci!!!!

  • This song is SICK!!!!!

  • who is the arranger??? the band is RIDICULOUS ! daaaaang

  • @AfuaRichardson Robert Glasper

  • Not sure if it's the crazy implementation of 4 against 3, but the rhythm in this tune is so addictive.

  • The album is on itunes. i just bought it.

  • Glasper is a genius!! 6/4?? 2 ill!!

  • this is SWVs song

  • All I can say is WOW!!!! I saw her perform with Esperanza in NY a couple of weeks ago. She is awesome!!! One of my favorite vocalist now!!! Praise God for good music!!

  • this joint is so live!!!!

  • arrrghhhhh the fade out sucks....let the band take that shit higher...they were just taking off. love it. great song...really nice playing and chemistry in the rhythm section. MEAN.

  • I think Jazz is the only good music out there now and anyone who says otherwise should just shutup.

  • WHEW!!!! can't believe i missed this she's killing

  • So fresh.

  • Im your newest fan Gretchen!!!

  • Scott here on drums is just as tasty as drumming can get...!!

  • this is real music!

  • no disslikes says it all

  • OMG!!!! Robert Glasper is a BEAST for this arrangement!!!!!

  • @10JLB let's give credit where it's due - the arrangement was both gretchen parlato and robert glasper.

  • omg, i picked the wrong time to try and figure out what that damn football icon was for. Ruined a perfectly good song for a second :/

  • Robert Glasper's arrangement of SWV's song is just too hip for words..

Btw, i talked to Kendrick Scott and Aaron Parks about this..

    It's in 6/4 ! :D

  • yyyyyyyyyaaaaaassssss love it

  • Love it. But where is the title track?

  • This just made my day ......truely

  • Its in 4!! Common stop the madness

  • @whathaveweherepeople It's only in 4 if the dotted quarter gets the beat. but, when quarter gets the beat (which it does) it's in 6/4.

  • you can count it in 3/4 or 4/4 because of the metric modulation, but if you listen to it...its in 6/4 officially.

  • @Brian4hand i have listen to this song and today i just came to the conclusion its 6/4... i feel like a musical burden has been lifted! now that i understand i can fully appreciate the drummers licks #pause lol

  • @KeeFBlizZ lol I felt the same way

  • this is TOO ILL! i wonder if SWV has heard this..

  • @herFLYness79 Yes - in an interview I heard, the composer of the song contacted her and said he loved what she did with it. Nice.

  • 12/8, 6/8, 6/4, 3/4..... Whatever you want to call it!!! All that i know is this joint is dope!

  • Comment removed

  • The bridge is in 3

  • EXCELLENT Jazz interpretation of a CLASSIC SWV song!!

  • Gretchen Parlato!!!

  • no its simply 6/4 repeating itself

  • @dingdingbong1 ,.Excellent that's the Ball Park, I was Hearing ,.Thanks!!

  • "Go Head On" Gretchen!! This is so cool and your voice sounds terrific!! I enjoyed meeting you at UCLA on Tuesday! :-)

  • Having trouble counting the Head !! ,.anyone got a idea ???!! 6/8 plus a 5,.12?????

  • @Feesharp9er its 6\4

  • @shnizelwithshit ,.Right on ,.SO FUN!!!

  • @Feesharp9er In a Interview ,.She's say its 3 ,.,.But 6/4 seem like the One!!

  • THIS SWV!!!

  • This is very good. Her voice is great1

  • Incredible Kendrick

  • Sounds like radiohead mixed with bossa nova with a progressive touch. What I mean to say is it sounds awesome!!! Great song.

  • This is a BOSSA NOVA from BRAZIL...

  • i love this

  • Incredible!

  • YEEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!! :-)

  • you can give props to robert glasper for this arrangment... toooo smooth

  • the 3 bar phrases in the A section are sick. She just floats over them.

  • i love it love love!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Blows my mind every time! This proves that our brand of music has a place!

  • It's a wonderful tribute to a great song at many levels. The arrangement is amazing, the playing is amazing, and this interpretation is emotionally so genuine and vulnerable, obviously inspired by swv and expressed the heartfelt message of the song beautifully. "who did it better" misses the point. its way beyond that.

  • @gooddaze1 agreed and well stated.

  • I do think the original is better, though this is def more creative. Gretchen is super talented as well as creative, but her rhythm section adds sooooo much to her stylistic ideas.

  • It is now her song. 100% owned

  • This is the HOTTEST version of Weak I've heard in my life.....I'm going out to buy her album NOW!!!!

  • this is superhot

  • incredible. so amazing.

  • fool u stupid u just dont like this genre of music if u was into it u would like it sucka
