I love both Greece and Persia, but really guys: Have you ever heard about Persian victorious or good deeds.
Cyrus The great (The guy who conquered the Medes, Lydian Greeks and Babylonians and made Persia great) freed over 200 000 slaves when he conquered Babylon. Do we ever hear about that? No.
At the battle of Thymbra 60 000 Persians defeated 150 000 Lydian Greeks, but do we ever hear about that?
Anahita was a persian Female "admiral" but still ancient persians are potrayed as oppresors.
It was all going fine and then... You actually think there is a "war on terror" and you believe that America has "rights", the American people has been poisoned, fattanised and enslaved in order to build a powerful army, you never whip a horse before you mount it, first you give it confidence, you feed it, you kae it happy and then mount a saddle and make it your slave. Story repeats itself, we just forget that we are making history right now and that the cruzades are still on.
FUCK THE ARABS! THE REASON WE ARE SEEING THE GRECO-PERSIAN WAR FROM A GREEK PERSPECTIVE IS BECAUSE OF ARABS! THEY DESTROYED ALMOST ALL PERSIAN LIBRARIES WHEN THEY CONQUERED THE SASSANID EMPIRE! THEY DESTROYED THE HISTORY OF MY PEOPLE AND THATS WHY WE ARE FORCED TO RELY ON THAT PRICK HERODOTUS!
Athenians where the terrorists of the ancient times. Even the Spartans fought them..
Athenians supported the ionian revolt and killed thousands of civilians (9/11 of Persia)
Persia got angry and wanted revenge. They had success in the beginning but failed..
Just like USA is fighting the terrorists, the Persians fighted the Greeks.. Persians failed to win against their own terrorists. Lets see how USA wil fight their own terrorists.
Ancient Greeks never had Democracy as we are conditioned to conceive it - rather "Androcracy" at best.
Persians did have some slaves, as in the King's keeping - eunuchs etc., and they still allowed some slavery in the lands they conquered - for this reason, Ancient Persia can not quite be considered as free an empire as you would have it, but still a step ahead of the Greeks nevertheless.
By the way, Herodotus did what he could with the sources he had. He was not present when these events took place, he did not participate like Xenophon, try to remember that. And if you have issues with the way your ancestors were portrayed in an American film (and I understand it, I too would feel offended in your place), it's not the Greeks you should blame.
@pitsinokaki we don't blame the Greeks, but you should see how many Greeks take pride in this movies and start believing it. I blame america, but i'm disappointed in Greece.
believe me, i am greek and i know history, this was just a movie. In our history books there are no monster persians or anything like the movie. The comments by 15 year old uneducated greeks are only logical, since they dont know history, they learn and believe hollywood shit(this minority exists in all countries)
p.s. anyone who has red herodotus knows that he was very favourable and praised often persians, stop chasing the wind
You do have some serious points, however comparing today's "War on Terror" to the war between Persia and the greek cities, comparing Greeks to jihadists etc is simply untrue AND stupid. I see from your profile that you're Iranian, I would expect from an Iranian to know better... Greetings from Greece.
I think that you are quite right.Even though that is a historically true event, We also have to look at the circumstances. I have to add that during the time the Pope was killing of the most famous minds of history, The Greece and the Persians always stood together when it came to preserving the knowledge.
i agree with all you arguments you are telling the truth but whats up with those pics? the masculine Persian warriors? are you not doing the same thing those filmmakers were doing to those Spartans? showing your people as great masculine warriors? this is called nationalism! this is about proving your nation is the best! when will people realize how too serve the world the best and showing off how good their deeds are! nations like Sweden and Switzerland learn from them! btw im Persian myself!
@Saber10inch there is nothing wrong with nationalism and you don't see persians making movies about 'Gorgeuous musculared persians vs ugly pedophile greeks'.
Sweden and Switzerland have nothing to be proud of in their history so of course they wouldn't lol
What I do not understand is how Herodotus can claim that 2 MILLION "Persians" invaded Thermopylae and how these 300 fanboys can actually buy this crap. 150 thousand is even pushing it.
This is total rubbish. Any reader of Herodotus will find him incredibly generous and complimentary towards the culture and accomplishments of the persians. He was however compelled by facts to report what had happend at Thermopylae and Marathon and give an account of WHY it happened. He is an incredibly unbaised ancient historian. One would never even know he is a greek from 99% of what he is writing. You are a fool.
I generally agree with your idea. I do feel the Persians happen to have a bit of a bad image when they weren't as bad as we make them out to be. They were a civilised empire with great deals of organisation and administration and lots of culture and history. So were the Greeks, but we've been biased towards favouring Greece as 'good' and Persia as 'evil'. I love Greece, but i do find it annoying how history is manipulated
I like your video, but the title is misleading. Herodotus is not the big liar here; Zack Snyder is, and the western connotations of Thermopylae as shown in 300 are blatantly false and ideologically suspect. Your video is slightly biased the other way though; to call Spartans jihadists and the Persian Empire a haven of freedom is just as overly simplistic and ideologically coloured as the views you are here refuting.
Herodotus's work is however interesting but it must be investigated.
"The Greek historian Herodotus of Halicarnassus, who described the Persian War, felt that he had to apologize for saying that the Athenians had once defeated the Persians."
So, insulting Persian Empire is rather due to the fact that some liars used the history of ancient world for their disgusting purposes...
after the conquest of cities , Iranian Kings : " i ordered that no one is permittedto abuse anybody or to damage the cities . i ordered that no house should be damaged and no one´s property should be violated and ransacked ."
Filme und Shows: after the conquest of cities , Alexander : " i ordered that everbody is permitted to damage the cities , i ordered that every house should be damaged and every one´s property should be violated and ransacked ´."
im australian by the way and i personally dont like america so this isnt a personal think just think this video makes some pretty out there claims and i could probably even call it biased considering your from iran yourself. though it does have strong facts and i agree with what your saying, its all just a bit extreme to me
Persian kings allowed the people of each state to maintain their own religion and culture and choose their own ruler, while they recieved tax from them and summoned them to war if needed.
Persian Empire as the first and largest organized government based today's most successful form of government in the world that we see in USA, Canada, Australia,...
So which one do you think is the founder of the Western Civilization???
Today's Democracy is not a Greek product because it has no similarity to it, Democracy is based on Freedom and Respect to Human Rights that Cyrus the Great had introduced long before Greek's golden era.
Cyrus's Persia included several independent states like Babylon, Assyria, Armenia, Lydia, Bactria,... which they all had their own governments, that's why Persian Kings always introduced themselves as King of Kings.
Persians never interfered with their local affairs so long as they are just
It is true that Herodotus was Anti-Persian and his figures in most cases are unaccountable, why? Because you can find in his writtings he had tried to degrade and derogate Persian in any possible way.
For instance he declared that persians were racist and practiced slavery, which is copletely opposite to the ancient inscriptions carved not only by Persians but in all other states like; Babylon, Assyria, Lydia, etc.
Pah! I'd be inclined to agree that Herodotus was a propagandist and liar who grossly inflated figures and fudged facts, though the second I saw you are an Iranian with an agenda of aggrandizing Persian culture the red light immediately went off. That's the thing about you nationalist, patrotic types (be it you or Herodotus): you're biased, untrustworthy, have a political agenda, and your "facts" should always be taken with a grain of salt.
@ioport lol so when you hear herodotus it's all well but when you see an iranian doing it with actual good arguments (vs herodotus' wild guessings) you start bitching? lol it's people like you who create hatred, not 1 poor guy who tries to rectify all the injust insults, misinterpretations and outrageous lies we persians had to take from all this american/western bullshit.
So from what i have said (minus my first comment, the new youtube system is confusing to me xD so sorry for the double post) I would liek to conclude that Herodotus was not exactly a liar, more jsut opinionated or ill informed. Most of his writings on this particular war were based on what he was told by ex soldiers in pubs, so there is going to be much misinterpretation there.
That aside, as an aspiring Historian, I really enjoyed your video =]
that, alolongside the fact that the Persians were not very successful in their attack towards the end, led to the Persians not recounting it in as much detail (please correct me if I am wrong, as I am a young historian with limited knowledge). There is easier access to the Greek point of view than there is to the Persian point of view, and more detail in the Greek version, so it is much easier to work with for Hollywood writers, even if they are close minded idiots.
My friend, you have made some fantastic points here in this video you have made, Especially with your comparison between Ancient Greece and modern day terrorist organisations.
But what you need to remember is that Herodotus was more an entertainer than he was a historian in his time. He, and Athenian entertainer/historian, told his stories to an Athenian audience, so of course there is going to be a General bias. That, along side the fact that (from my studies) the Persians were not as
In this video you make some fantastic points, especially with your comparison of Greece to the modern day terrorist organisations, and I can see where you are coming from.
But what you need to remember is that Herodotus wasn't as much a historian as he was an Entertainer. The way he told his stories was by speaking. He was an Athenian entertainer for an Athenian audience, so of course there is going to be some sort of bias there. Also, keep in mind that (from what I have studied) the Persian
Herodotus was called the father of history not because he was what we would call a "historian". He was a compiler of stories, and collected, collated, and retold stories that were told to him. Whether these stories were true or not was not important to him. He often says in his histories that he does not "believe" what was told him, but he relates it nevertheless. Also remember, he never actually "wrote" anything. He dictated, or lectured, his tales. Others wrote them down.
do you think that spartans were wrong when they decided to go to thermopyles and recist to 2,7 million persians??????and don't forget that halicarnasus was built and growed by greeks until the persian's killed them all.
It is clear that you did not read nor understand Herodotus' view on the Persians, but have instead thrown a childish tantrum in the face of movies like 300. Nobody with half a brain views the Persians or Iranians as barbaric at any point in their history; nor the Greeks as oppressive, lying tyrants. Pity, then, that so many Americans don't have half a brain.
well isn't it a coincidence that this was part of a ''group'' of films all portraying
Muslims as savages and beasts right after 9/11? (I know, but the ignorants don't know the differences between Persians and Muslims).
And not to mention that the maker of the movie was a Jew (The Israelian & Palestinian conflict?). Is this all a coincidence or is it made to spread the hate?
No, the next movie should be, 20.000 Serbs, against Otoman Muslim Army that numbers 500.000 strong, the battle that took place on 15. jun 1389. The Serbian Christian Army deffended the whole Europe from swords of muslims. And every single Serb died in that battle deffending all nations of Europe. We did not get any help from Europeans. Now, these days, you have one more muslim nation in Europe. And from that nation, muslim Kosovo, the plegaue to all Europeans, terrorism will come. Its too late
Dude it is just a movie with crazy graphics. It is not selling culture, teaching history or depicting the civilizations. What should we do about the awful series Hercules and Xena? Bomb the US? Please stop these conspiracy theories. As if they haven't massacred our own history with Alexander and Troy. They are just FUCKING COMMERCIAL MOVIES. Sigh...
maybe its your short attention span or the fact you cant read, dont just watch the 1 cartoon....the point he is trying to make has nothing to do with 300 but rather that deminising persian culture has started since 1850, and undermining of the iranian civilisation has gone for 1000s of year by the jealous greeks who had a hard time controling their little island
Well , some very good points that are widly known about persian empire. Although, dont use them to validate all the rest of the garbage you added as well. Herodotus admired the Persians but never forget that his city was greek that was conqured by the persians. I agree with u that Persians were made out to be like monsters. They were simply a growing advanced Empire that needed to expand and greece was in its way with the rise of Athenian trade power seen as a threat.
Movies are movies, if people take what they see through films, and see it as fact they are retarted. movies are fake. why criticize a fake movie, it wasnt a documentry.thanks for youe info. it was a good movie, fun to watch. doesnt mean i like spartans or persians any better or worse. because its fake. make a movie on cyrus the great see what will happen.
Fake or not movies can not be made against the Jewish people. There is a double standard. 300 was part of the immense propaganda of the west media to twist history & prepare the world for an attack on Iran.
It was preposterous to see the Spartans just covering and protecting their heads and exposing their bodies, as if the Persians only hit the enemy in the head LOL
they dont need movies to turn people against a country. Cuz noone will hate Iran because of something that happened 2500 years ago. They just need fake facts and the american people are so stupid, they eat every shit that their goverment give them to eat.
300 had stereotyped roles but the US aren't the good guys. they ousted democracies and replaced them with dictators (chile - pinochet, nicaragua - somoza) and killed thousands through terrorism. my point isn't that the US are evil - there are no good or bad guys. every culture has murdered in conquest, but "What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans, and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty and democracy?"
One thing is for sure, that nearly EVERY country in the world (Greece, Iran, USA, etc) has had their time in holding slaves and participating in wars. Practically every country has killed for their own purposes and beliefs. 300 was merely ONE account however assimilated it may appear to you. I'm sure Persians have different stories to tell.
Theres so many disputed 'facts' in this video that no one knows for sure what really happened. Calling Herodotus or anyone else a liar because YOU don't agree with him is kinda nonsense don't you think? I mean you were not there were you?
(Dangit, I'm going to have to do this in paragraphs...)
An interesting movie, but pretty damn biased regardless. '300' is admittedly an extraordinarily biased piece of semi-propaganda that serious students of history look at and laugh - but this response is in many ways just as bad.
Why is it when you chose point out all of the negatives of how xerxes was portrayed in 300. You just HAD to list him as being African, right behind drag queen and over sized. Oh yeah and besides, the movie was made for entertainment purposes. I never saw the persians (out side of the movie)as terrible people.
Interesting but i think you are reaching too much to bring comparisons of the Achaemenid Persia and the United States. What issues did you find with Alexander?
I am not taking shots at Greeks, I am only exposing Herodotus's lies, I got nothing against rest of Greeks. Also I know 300 is a joke based on a comic and shouldn't be taken seriously but the comic itself is mostly based on Herodotus's lies and thats what I am attacking in this video not the movie per se.
Do you know that the battle shown in the movie was only a small part of what happined.their were 301 Spartans,Leanidos and 300 veterens, but in all there were 10,000 greeks Thesbians,Atheneans(though very few) and soldiers from other citystates .The persians enslaved those who did not give in.those that did were free to live as they wanted under persian rule
@TalkOfTheInternet See I'm just struggling to see how you could possibly link the French and the American's arguably the two most retarded and arrogant race of people to ever walk on this earth to The Greeks and the Persians.
Two old and noble cultures who's supremacy along with several other great factions will never be challenged even by these nuke happy children.
the owner of this video is a fool. he takes too seriously a movie that was taken out of a comic. he is also a racist because he's shooting at greeks for something made by americans/ thinks that only persia is worth to be mentioned as a great civilization
No doubt about it, you people are morons. Of course it is not realistic, it's a comic book, and a rather crappy one I might add. Nobody thinks Xerxes looked like Ru Paul nor the immortals like something from " The Night of the Living Dead." As to it biasing every one to the Middle East, I bet most of the people who enjoy this film have no idea where Persia was in the first place. It's crap, it's fake, get over it.
its based on a freakin comic book. highly stylized and obviously not realistic, it doesn't even pretend to be realistic. so you can't complain that it misleads unless you are seriously arrogant and think everyone else is not as smart as you. get over yourself.
The film 300 is only a FILM! Not a documentary... Frank miler doesnt want to teach us story but he wants to take our money. Im greec ant i watched the film, not because im greec but because i loved the effects in the trailer. I think that you shouldnt take the film seriously but you should enjoy it as a story...And something else: US wars and problems are nothing in front to what we passed.
Dude, how would u feel if we made a movie about Alexander the Great for example. Showed him as a 9 foot tall cross dressing african, and this companion cavalry as monsters on dragons?, dont u think u would be a little "upset"
I'd totally watch that movie, if they did the effects like they did with 300. Honestly, I think you should be angrier at stupid people that take their history from movies and comic books, rather than the people doing what they enjoy and making movies. And I'm sorry if I use Herodotus as my main source of information for the Greek happenings- It's what my professors use, and therefor, I muse use.
Personally as a Greek I felt offended by the movie "300" they show us like US marines screaming and chearing. And I also feel that they make Persians look like savages which is not true at all. But this hasn't any relationship with what happened in Greek-Persian wars.
although I have nothing against iranians and I understand their anger at the FICTIONAL film 300 I must also say that the author of this video is a blind idiot, his arguments and selective use of verified history (not only Herodotus) remind me of balkan nationalist propaganda.Keep this up and eventually you will create an issue between Greece and Iran without reason.
I know you have nothing against Greeks, but some things in your video are annoying..All Greeks love and respect Persia(Iran) cause of its people and culture. And true Persians didn't use slaves, they used to pay, even the soldiers had their monthly salary.
...It is important that we Iranians understand the threats clearly. While I agree that once US hosted many great men and still does, the fact is that conglomerates are changing the world we live in and this is a beast that acts as a sociopath, it has no sense of right and wrong. Profit is its ultimate goals. It normally runs cost benefit analysis. If the profit outweighs the cost it will not hesitate in destroying the environment or millions to achieve it.
...These states like nothing more than statuesque. US a potentially bankrupt state (of approximately $8 Trillion) and consumer of more than 25% of world's oil needs more oil to sustain its economic growth. It also needs urgently to slow down Oil thirsty China's with an annual economic growth of more than 11% annual within the next few years or it is predicted that by 2020 China will become the world superpower.
However, one must not forget that US's agenda has absolutely little to do with Greeks hatred of the Persians. I believe that on the one hand Iran is a country with all the necessary ingredients of becoming an independent and democratic country in ME. We had a go at this in 1950s while Mossadegh was in power. Historically Iran had effected the region due to its cultural and political influences. Arab puppets (Saudi, Kuwait, Jordan,...) are extremely worried.
And finally you get some facts wrong. Halicarnassus was a Dorian Greek city that had been subordinated by the Persian Empire. At a young age Herodotus was forced into exile and a little later he started his travels. He travels from Scythia in the north to Egypt in the south and from Babylonia in the east to greece in the west...
But I want to say this too: Talkoftheinternet, you identify Herodotus' view on Persia with Frank Miller's view. I have read his work and Herodotus never demonizes Persia nor does he apply to her conquests the word enslave. He uses the words conquer and subordinate instead.
I am a Greek and I have to say that I agree with Iranians being outraged by this monie(300) because it portays them as brutal, uncivilized barbarians and cowards, which clearly they were not. It also portrays the Spartans as being stupid brutes with a pervert and corrupted leadership. You cant make a movie that distorts history and hide behind the fact that it was based on a comic, especially when you know that your target group is ignorat of the real facts
lol the sassanian persians Though out numbered By the romans Defeated the Roman legionars. hahahah and one of Romes Emperor was captured and sold in to slavery.
Fact during the roman times the only other super power in the world that prelled with Rome Was Saassanid persia. Europe was nothing in ancient time compared to the middle east lol
The ideas presented by the author are that Greeks should be Africans and the Persians like blue eyed "chippendale dancers"? Persia had a great civilization, so did Greece.
Dear Perxes, I could understand (more or less) your national annoyance for this movie, as Spaniard I could feel in the same way with the films of "pirates" in the 50ths. But I think too that you Iranians are overreacted. It is just a movie, no more, and based not in Herodotus but in a comic, almost a manga, by Frank Miller.
Lies, Lies, and more lies thats wha the Western World those. WE have been supressed for thousands of years. The Western World has denied our cultural and social supremacy for years.

Greeks do not have any problem with Iranians today, If USA uses history for any other reason this has nothing to do with the perpective of the Greeks about you. No Greek historian wrote sth insalting about Persians instead many of them lived there. Now about the so called history you have in your video i really can not sb like you that blame's Herodotus being liar and after the 3rd minute refering to him as a source of evidence. Decide what you thing of him first man. Nobody takes you serious.
the history what will be used and is very readable for european and american was written by european , also it is not objectiv ,but more subjectiv . if they read always that they had weak empires and they had sometimes good luck to win the fight , nobody would read that . and nobody would interest in own european history .(heroes made in hollywood)

You are such an asshole. YOu are against propaganda you say, than what must one call this? I respect Persian culture, and I am a western man. Every1 knows that the movie 300 is a MOVIE! Therefore it is NOT REAL, you retarded craphead!. The roman empire was better than the persian, and dont come with Carrhae you fucker!
I never said 300 is not a movie I just stated that the movie is based on a lie by herodotus. lol & to compare the Roman empire (a short lived empire) to the Persian Empire (the longest lasting empire) is foolish at best. Haha Carrhae is just 1 of the many battles where the Persians owned the romans, so you wanna talk about Edessa or Sammara instead where the Romans got owned even more badly? The Romans always paid tribute and taxes to the Persians stating who the clear master of the world was.
Talk, you did a wonderful job here. I am an American. I am also not middle eastern. It has been a hobby of mine to study the Persian Wars since I was a kid. I saw the movie "300' and I felt that it was very offensive. You speak the truth. Nice job!
This was amazing. I think that everyone should see it-good work. It's like every view I had about 300 was just pasted onto Youtube. I'm glad though that most of America's youth-and as sad as it is-probably doesn't remember the movie anymore, by the way ZACK SNYDER there's more to a movie than a blue screen and muscles.
'I just thought to inform you of a couple of anecdotes on Herodotus to mention.
1)He stated that the 3rd pyramid at Giza was built at the behest of a Greek prostitute, who was paid for her services by placing a stone after every service performed.
2)He mentioned that Black Africans and Indians have black semen.
3)He stated that the land east of India was all desert.'
During the wars with Rome under the Sasannian persian empire the Romans were imprisoned and used to build stuff and the only thing that the only thing that comes to my mind regarding Persian and slavery is how they used the Romans to build things. And when the Roman emperor was captured by Shapour I he was dragged from a horse and tortured but no where states that his companions were enslaved.
now this was under the 1st Persian empire during the achamanid era. Many greeks, egyptians, ledyians etc were part of the Persian army and worked and lived
Yes, Cyrus was a great liberator and I'm aware of the first universal declaration of human rights(discovered in 1879, 53 years after Thomas Jefferson died.). Look, Persia was feudal like all the other civs. Every civilization was feudal and relied upon slavery. That includes Rome, Israel, Egypt, Greece and yes, Persia. Of course, slaves did have some rights and it wasn't chattel slavery as occurred in the New World towards Africans and Amerindians.
Regarding ancient Persia, yes, Cyrus the Great was a great ruler and an enlightened despot. HOwever the only form of government that existed for civilizations on a mass scare were highly centralized autocracies and that included in Persia. Next every civilization was feudal again including Persia and therefore they relied significantly on slavery. Neither Persia nor any other civilization was ready to abolish slavery.
We really need to be fair to Herodotus. They didn't have cars, planes, telephones, ground penetrating radar, and many other forms of technology and techniques, so he was actually quite limited in his ability to verify statements that people told him.
Xenophon was personally present in his descriptions of his expedition and in the history of the last 7 years of the Peloponessian war and subsequent events. Herodotus heard info. from travellers and was NOT personally present. It's comparing apples and oranges. BTW, I want to be fair to the dead as they aren't here to defend themselves.
Yes that is exactly what I'm saying, and hey these are not my words, all the historians and politicians know this. Hell even Alexander and later the Romans copied the Persian style of governing, because thats the only way you can build a big empire and keeping your kingdoms united is the key, that's how it was with the Persians who remained the longest ever super power, while the Greeks spent most of the time fighting each other.
Baron de Montesquieu wrote an excellent book on the rise and fall of ancient Rome. One of the key problems was the local loyalty to generals among Romans and then to local lords among German mercenaries rather than to Rome itself. This caused a lot of infighting, that weakened Rome.
so you want to say that the persian empire was democratic and offered to humanity science and reason more than the greek city states?i'm not implying that the greek city states were perfect but there is a big difference between the two don't you think?
I love both Greece and Persia, but really guys: Have you ever heard about Persian victorious or good deeds.
Cyrus The great (The guy who conquered the Medes, Lydian Greeks and Babylonians and made Persia great) freed over 200 000 slaves when he conquered Babylon. Do we ever hear about that? No.
At the battle of Thymbra 60 000 Persians defeated 150 000 Lydian Greeks, but do we ever hear about that?
Anahita was a persian Female "admiral" but still ancient persians are potrayed as oppresors.

Ancient Greeks never had Democracy as we are conditioned to conceive it - rather "Androcracy" at best.
Persians did have some slaves, as in the King's keeping - eunuchs etc., and they still allowed some slavery in the lands they conquered - for this reason, Ancient Persia can not quite be considered as free an empire as you would have it, but still a step ahead of the Greeks nevertheless.

you have a real stick up your ass about this.
try and remember this was just a cheap action flick, the only people who trusted its validity are people that are likeable to bricks.
and i wouldn'y suggest arguing with a brick.... they're very dumb.
but in all seriousness.
this isn't the west trying to mock your ancestors. its hollywood trying to make a cheap buck by providing an 'underdog story'.
thats all

By the way, Herodotus did what he could with the sources he had. He was not present when these events took place, he did not participate like Xenophon, try to remember that. And if you have issues with the way your ancestors were portrayed in an American film (and I understand it, I too would feel offended in your place), it's not the Greeks you should blame.

MasterObiWanCannoli 3 years ago 15
I like your video, but the title is misleading. Herodotus is not the big liar here; Zack Snyder is, and the western connotations of Thermopylae as shown in 300 are blatantly false and ideologically suspect. Your video is slightly biased the other way though; to call Spartans jihadists and the Persian Empire a haven of freedom is just as overly simplistic and ideologically coloured as the views you are here refuting.
Dutchmaster81 3 years ago
Herodotus's work is however interesting but it must be investigated.
"The Greek historian Herodotus of Halicarnassus, who described the Persian War, felt that he had to apologize for saying that the Athenians had once defeated the Persians."
So, insulting Persian Empire is rather due to the fact that some liars used the history of ancient world for their disgusting purposes...

And not to mention that the maker of the movie was a Jew (The Israelian & Palestinian conflict?). Is this all a coincidence or is it made to spread the hate?

Well , some very good points that are widly known about persian empire. Although, dont use them to validate all the rest of the garbage you added as well. Herodotus admired the Persians but never forget that his city was greek that was conqured by the persians. I agree with u that Persians were made out to be like monsters. Fake or not movies can not be made against the Jewish people. There is a double standard. 300 was part of the immense propaganda of the west media to twist history & prepare the world for an attack on Iran.

Great post. Thank you.

He travels from Scythia in the north to Egypt in the south and from Babylonia in the east to greece in the west...
erixthonios 4 years ago
But I want to say this too: Talkoftheinternet, you identify Herodotus' view on Persia with Frank Miller's view. I have read his work and Herodotus never demonizes Persia nor does he apply to her conquests the word enslave. He uses the words conquer and subordinate instead.

I am a Greek and I have to say that I agree with Iranians being outraged by this monie(300) because it portays them as brutal, uncivilized barbarians and cowards, which clearly they were not. This is a pm I got from Aegius:
'I just thought to inform you of a couple of anecdotes on Herodotus to mention.
1)He stated that the 3rd pyramid at Giza was built at the behest of a Greek prostitute, who was paid for her services by placing a stone after every service performed.

Many greeks, egyptians, ledyians etc were part of the Persian army and worked and lived
in Persian but they were not neccessarily slaves.

Over the king was AHURA MAZDA ( the wise God). The zoroastrian's doctrine overran persia.
Persians captured ennemy and absorbed them as worker in the kingdom, but they were no slave. Persians never had inhuman actions on them.
Because Ahura Mazda formerly rejected slavery and bad actions toward someone else.
Cyrus freed all slaves even when he conquered other lands he freed the slaves in those lands i.e jews in babylon

Next thing you will say is that Hitler was a liberator

Aegius 4 years ago
neither did other people who wrote history at the time i.e Xenephon but they didn't write lies like Herodotus. So that is no excuse.

Aegius 4 years ago
