  • It's true that a profit motive drives most everything in a capitalist country.

Whats important to note, is that socialism grew in popularity so quickly at the turn of the century because people could see it reduced mental problems.

  • At the end, I didn't read their comment as having anything at all to do with evolution. Am watching the original vid concurrently with yours but you said they go into behavioural studies, which seems to fit the comment meaning they had to get rid of the idea that men have souls. This doesn't necessitate evolution being true?

  • Your treatment of benjamin rush is just bad analysis. I don't care if he was anti-slavery. Hitler was a vegetarian. It changes nothing. You should have adressed the claims made about his horrific treatment of people. Did he invent "the tranquiliser"? Yup, and that was a travesty. I hate rush. Hey, he was probably kind to his wife, but he still made life hell for so many people.

With Cotton, it would have been nice if you could point to some good work being done in the early 20th century.

  • @TMOvids "Your treatment of benjamin rush is just bad analysis"

Rush was wrong, and his methods had much to be desired. I provided the background I did because it does point toward motives which were hardly sinister.. although as with those before him, the methodology was horrific.

Note; During the 20th century There really wasn't much work that would be considered good by modern standards. The shrink were just stumbling in the dark groping for answers.

  • "at least the man tried"

No. What William Battie did was wrong, regardless of intention.

I don't know nearly enough about history to comment on motives of psychiatrists in the 18th century (and I'm almost certain you don't either) but money seems much more likely than fame. That doesn't discredit the work in any way, so no need to distance it from that.

  • @TMOvids True, I can only speculate as to the motives of 18th century shrinks.. or modern ones for that matter.. However this was the time period in which the concept of curing the mentally ill began to be promoted (even if it was bullshit). Prior to this you were killed for being "possessed" exorcised, or locked away without any thought given to the possibility of recovery.

  • The first psych ward was horrible? No way! Everyone knows how smoothly all other medical procedures worked in the old days.

  • Also take into account that the DSM only removed 'homosexuality' as a mental disease in 1970 on the basis of a vote. The common view has been that 'madness' was a result of moral weakness, leading to "moral insanity" being used as a common diagnosis. Most patients were unwed mothers, disobedient wives, the poor and the homeless. The playwright Nathaniel Lee was incarcerated there for five years, reporting that: "They called me mad, and I called them mad, and damn them, they outvoted me. ;-)

  • This issue is far more complex than either side here represent.

  • Yes, much more complex, which is a great remark from you - seeing as you're neglecting to acknowledge the historical cultural views during the time periods being referenced.

  • 'which is a great remark from you' How nice for you to say so. I do take into account 'historical cultural views' and also apply them to what is happening in culture today. Homo Sapiens have not evolved so rapidly that the ideas revealed by our past culture/history have disappeared. They just take on different, but just as dangerous, forms of expression.

  • The scientologists distorted propaganda is sickening, dishonest and dangerous. Such organisations must be thwarted and the only real weapon is the truth. Their delusional pseudoscience leads to tragedies such as Lisa Macpherson. Well done for your post and thank you.

  • not convincing enough for me.u cannot justify human torture by a "will" to heal patients and furthermore against their will..what right have psychiatrists to impose their treatment if even now none of the latter have been medically justified and none of the causes nor symptoms known with certitude?i dont doubt the good will of most of psychiatrs but it seems to me a very subjective science that shouldnt be considered as a variety of medecin but rather as that of phylosophy.just my opinion though

  • "truthful factual documentary" lmao!! Sadly you probably believe the CCHR bullshit draziom99. I'll bet my house that in 50 years psychiatry will still be here. The Co$ on the other hand will be dead & buried.

  • Evolution is not widely accepted, actually. In a recent study, it was found that more Americans do not believe in evolution than actually believe in it. It is widely accepted in the SCIENTIFIC community, just not with the public. Just a slight correction for your awesome video.

  • You overlook one tiny detail here about the early seekers for a cure for mental illness. Some of them were also motivated by compassion for human suffering, something sadly lacking in scientology.

  • torontoist(dot)com/2008/06/anons_flash_scientology.php

  • This reminds me of Creationists propaganda videos about the history of evolution.

I guess crazy all comes from the same well.

  • Great work!

    Hail Xenu!

  • Great work 13. I can notice an improvement with your videos. Your delivery and dialoge is great and im glad your friend talked you into doing this one.

  • Nothing but an attempt to compensate for the fact Dinetics does not work

  • They actually slandered an American founding father for his universally praised research? Unbelievable. Thanks as always for cutting through the crap.

  • There is much in Benjamin Rush's research to criticize, and yet CCHR still somehow gets it wrong.

  • BTW, let's put credit where it's due. CCHR's critique of Rush is lifted straight from the (similarly dishonest) works of Thomas Szasz.

  • i thought psychiatry began in germany

  • great video:)two questions though, wasnt "bleeding" seen as a cure for more then just mental illness in those days and, wasnt psychitry seen as a medical field before the 1900's?i mean they made claims about it before 1900, but dont claim it as being a medical field till after.

  • One of your best works so far 13H. You cut through the crap & get your message across so well. The CCHR manipulate & distort the facts about psychiatry. This Co$ bullshit propoganda has resulted in many mentally ill people going untreated. Many become a danger to themselves (suicide & self harm) or to others. Jeremy Perkins, a untreated paranoid schizophrenic who stabbed his Scientologist mother Elli Perkins 77 times is a prime example. The CCHR & Co$ should be held accountable for these deaths

  • Many thanks for actually giving some verifiable FACTS about psychiatry 13H, not the jumbled up lies of Scientology with a cool soundtrack!

Scientologist lie about Psychiatry, and what's worse, they know they're lying, and other weak minded scientologists just parrot stuff they either don't understand or are just too damn lazy to check for themselves.

Maybe we should hire a scary voice-over guy for our anti-CoS videos? :-)

  • Thank you for exposing this hate propaganda with intelligence and truth

  • Another awesome vid. I think i'm actually learning something?!

  • When $cientology and its front-groups (CCHR, narCONon) allow double-blind, peer-reviewed studies into their methods and gains evidence-based scientific credibility, then maybe people will have a valid reson to listen to their outrageous claims.

Psychiatry may not be perfect (it still helps MOST patients to live fuller, happier lives), but scamtology is not even valid.

  • I´d like to subtitle your Videos in german since were about to picket the cchr and we need some good info stuff.

Disregard that, I sense trolling in the text comments.

  • LRH was mentally ill. The man actually believed he could travel in space. He was nuts and anyone that believes him is also nuts.

Scientology is a cult. A global scam.

    :-)

  • Did you not say that you could have possibly murdered several people if it were not for Psychiatry? Yet you are saying that basic internet trolling will not be tolerated. Sounds like double standards to me on an infintite scale. Murdering several people makes somebody a serial killer, which is a tiny bit worse than internet trolling.
