When drum corps was still DRUM CORPS. No leaping lads in leoptards, no musicians crawling and skipping around, no Circ de Soleil dancers flopping and running.. When you couldn't play it if you didn't carry it on and off the field. OL'SKOOL, baby. -WPS-
You can notice that in the closeup in the closing seconds of the piece, the soloist Chris Metzger Forbes is off the high note and clearly limbering himself up for the opening solo in Rhapsody in Blue which starts out on a low trill.
@uboynfy8ynf While I agree Santa Clara had a great show that year, you have to admit Dueling Banjos might be one of the most impressive percussion features of that decade. From what I understand, much of the xylophone line was improvised.
Yay! a close-up of a sucky piston/rotor sop! I started marching in '79 and our baris and sops all had the two-piston models, but us poor french horns still did it old school. In 80 we got some new DEG flugel bugles, and that was a huge improvement (although the DEG horns were junk). "Dynasty - when you can't afford anything else."
Thank you, trumpetslayer! Probably the greatest of all the old-school concert-number chestnuts (well, this, and "One-Eyed Sailor", which I see you also have)! I hadn't looked for "certain" things like the '75 MacPark in a while, and it was "missing" from out here for too long!
I wish Madison would go back to their '75 uniforms....maybe tht wold help them get that championship Mojo back......watch them coming on the field was just as awesome as watching them perform. Man, those were good times for Drum and Bugle Corps!
I don't think I have even attempted to watch a recent DCI video ... tells you something about the "activity" these days. Don't get me wrong, the kids work hard and are good at what they do. But, the show designers these days seem to more interested in "advancing" the "art form" at the expense of pure, unadulterated ... energy, sound and power.
If I wanted to see a band ... well, um ... scratch that last thought.
Right on! Thank you so much for this post. Would you happened to have some clips from the '76 Blue Devils as well? They're my favorite corps from that decade.
This show was the first time I ever saw the Madison scouts. this was also my rookie year in The New York Lancers, (a Class "A" corps as they used to be known) The '75 DCI championship in Philadelphia was also our first Tour, our first DCI level competition. From the warm up to the finale, I was blown away by the hornline....especially the "ripple" about face before starting the off the line (do they still call it that?) or "opener". A great intro to drum corps, I still remember that today...

Forrest822 at the time I think they were "G" valve-rotor
bobd2754 6 months ago
the horns that they use in DCI are contrabass tumpets, trumpets, and contrabass bugles
xclover1990 6 months ago
what horns are those?????????
forrest822 6 months ago
@forrest822 I think Madison used DEG bugles, in G of course, and they were of course old school piston & rotor!

now, if they were running around the field playing this, like modern days, it would be so much more awesome.

Great, what happened with thatr incredable highblower after drumcorps?

@Jessesven If you are asking about the Soparano soloist, Chris Metzger Forbes teaches music and plays professionally in the Madison area.

I love madison but this wouldn't even compete as a street corp these days.
clark2293 1 year ago
@clark2293 You are right. They don't dance, sing, or play on Bb horns. And they don't have sticks up their butts, like the corps of today.
