A lot of things happened, he let himself go a little, and by the time he got back with blink he was recovering from the addiction and had problems with his throat.

Bands change and inovate. It's all good so long as you truly appreciate the music. No matter what a band will change it's sound and ideas as their lives change. Basically, a band that's around as long as Blink has been are going to change. At least they haven't done anything that sounds bad. Just different. I even prefer tom's sound in box car racer to his sound in anything else sometimes, but it's all good if you're open minded and really like the music these three amazing men make.
