Bush was losing the primaries until his campaign spread rumors that he had fathered an illegitimate child with a black woman. In fact, they had adopted the girl from Africa. The rumors were spread just before a critical primary in SC and McCain didn't have time to react. You will see the girl in question (his daughter) if you watch some of his campaign videos closely. She is short and overweight.
