The real story: Jesus of Suburbia (the American Idiot) lives at home with his single mom and boring lifestyle, gets tired of it and heads for the city in hopes of a new life. When he gets there he has the time of his life. Two new figures - St. Jimmy and Whatsername come along, showing him good times. But through all the good times, depression hits (Jimmy is in his mind) and he realizes that he isn't cut out for the city. He heads back home, leaving everything he knew in the city behind.

If you listen to the lyrics of the whole album it seems to me that it's about st jimmy leaving home, does some drugs, falls in love, becomes heartbroken then goes home. So in the space between heartbreak and going home his mental state changed from depression and therefore he became a different person.st jimmy is a name so it's there to represent who he is.

From what I understand, St. Jimmy is Jesus of Suburbia - Jesus of Suburbia wants something more than hanging around the 7/11, and doing soda pop and ritalin and someone else's cocaine. So, Jesus of Suburbia runs away from Jingle Town and starts a new life as saint Jimmy. Later on in the story, Jimmy decides he doesn't like his new life, and so, he "kills" Saint Jimmy.

Thats what I got out of it anyway. A masterpiece of modern art if you ask me.
