@cleave6 As mentioned before in the comments, take copper wire and wind it around an iron bar. A dc-current will magnetize the iron. In this case for 6000 turns and 6A it took around 80kg of copper. For a smaller size coil it could be less.

Also, does the diameter of the electromagnet need to be similar to the base of the meat grinder piece your magnetizing, or does that not matter?

@KDCindustries It will not help to tell you to work with certain dimensions and spend a lot of material and money not knowing what you want to get and for which effort. At least for most households it will be more than a weekend project. Some might prefer to make a simulation of a system before building it.

@manf1234 I understand that fact painfully well, believe me. I've been working on this stuff for months now. I've built a few of my own electromagnets that just weren't strong enough for one reason or another. Honestly, the hardest part for me has been finding iron to use as the core.

As far as running magnetic simulations go, what program would you recommend? SolidWorks (which is what I use most often) doesn't have magnetic simulation as a features.
