  • I ran a 1:46 on 800 thats my best :)

  • These idiots don't know what they are talking about.

  • that back drop looks like las vegas

  • in soviet russia 800m runs you

  • I'm doing the 800m on monday for sports day, my friend bet me a packet of crisps that i wouldn't come 1st,2nd,3rd,4th in it so i said yes even though everyone else is faster than me i'm just planning on taking the 1st lap at a steady pace but a good one then gradually speed up in the 2nd and sprint near the end if i haven't already collapsed :P I just hope the others get tired on the 1st lap by going to fast :D wish me luck !!

  • @xXxlibbybethxXx haha wat school do u go to, and a packet of crisps is a wierd wager :P

  • @xxxar0wxxx A packet of crisps was a little weird but i thought it would be fun :P Alot harder than i thought. I go to a school in yorkshire (england) i can't say which because it would be too easy for the weirdo's to find me :)

  • this is really good i won it today in a big league out of 16 peopkle

  • I've been practicing this 800 metres race for a few week's now, seeing as I'm doing it at a sports event where like a load of school's from the city go to. They're really fast.

And in my case, I have no `gameplan` - I know I can keep going, so I will.

But the most usual idea, like this guy said - is to stay cool in the first lap, jog but try and stay ahead. Then in the second, use the rest of your will, to overtake everyone. If that makes sense.

  • don't listen to him. the first lap is always faster then the second.

  • I ran a 4:23 1500 meters when I was 46 years old.

  • @River1Bandit thats fucking terrible

  • i love how you say HE, HIS, HE, HE, HE. how do you know it's not a female running?

  • @carolinelouisee Because we don't care and realize it isn't a big deal because we're not sexist like you! Get over yourself!

  • @voted4bush what?

  • @wejw14 More specific please.

  • @voted4bush sorry misread your comment

  • @wejw14 No problem. :)

  • i run the 800.. my second split is faster then my first. its the only way to guarantee that you run under a 2 minute.. my personal running style is to run for place and not for time. too much thinkin leads to fatiguing in my opinion. so my plan is to make my opponent run his race while i just follow him in second or 3rd place. then when the second lap hits.. usually everyone is tired because there busy concerning themselves with times but not me and im always around 2 mins. hope this helped! =)

  • @coryrichard19

Sprinters run positive splits and distance runners run negative splits. When I ran sub 2:00 I usually hit about 56-57 my first lap and follow up with a 62-63. Conversely I have plenty of friends that ran over 60 the first lap and sub 60 the second, it's just a matter of personal preference.

  • @MattShisler very true.. im a senior in high school.. im gonna try to break our school record this year (1:53) and i got a month to get in shape for the 1st meet aha. im gonna have to pull something outta my ass.

  • he's cool !! ty 4 the great advice :)))

  • I assume everyone who says negative splits never happen are in High School.

  • that is bullshit. The first one is always faster than the second one.

  • david wottle. 1:43. splits were 1 flat and 43. he held the record for what.. 20 years>?

  • @MrExzile You mean to tell us he broke the world record 400m in his second lap of an 800m. LOL, you are misinformed.

  • alright...it's possible to run negative splits...but dont really expect to run an amazing race off of it. all guts go out when you run your first lap faster, it's typically a faster race and always is more exciting :)

  • Rubbish. The first lap should be between 1.5 and 2 seconds faster than the second. That is the perceived wisdom. The mention of relaxation is true and what you need to do is learn to run 800m at a specific pace (if you are wanting to do under 2mins then between 2:05 and 2:10) and then run the last 100 of 900 as fast as you can. It is a good session for pace and change pace.

  • Personally I think you should run even splits. That's what I do an it usually works for me. A negative split would be nice, but it's hardly realistic in most sub-college races.

  • excuse me... you said a professional has to do this and that and you kept saying HE. im a girl and i came first in an 800m race with a lot of people in it!

  • Going for negative splits is not a good idea, go for a slightly faster 1st lap or even splits.

  • Re Afwell1 comment: Dave Wottle won the 800m Gold in the 1972 Olympics with not just even 400m splits but even 26.x splits for each 200m. If you watch the race it appears that he is speeding up to pass the entire field in the last 300m; actually everyone else is just slowing down while he maintains his pace.

  • the second lap seperates the boys from the men

  • The world record splits are acutally 49 and 52 look it up

  • When I first started doing 800's I noticed that I always went out fast. Always 8 seconds faster over even splits. As I progressed as a runner and as a track runner I noticed that my splits became closer and closer to even and now they are dead even almost always. I believe it just comes with discipline, Because if you relax on the first lap you have to mentally push your self to make up the time on the second lap while if you go hard in the first lap you just have to finish.

  • I'm running an 800m tomorrow and I've never ran it b4 and it's jv championships I'm so stressed right now! I've never done distance running!! Aaaah!!!!

  • Dave Wattle(1978) ran equal splits putting him in last place after 400meters , but won gold in the last 150 because the other runners ran a slower second lap.

  • For anyone watching this video, you have to find what is best for you. Some people like being in first place and trying not to lose to many positions, others like being in the front group towards the back(so you dont have to make up too much ground). For example kelly holms( 2004 summer olympics) stayed in last place untill the last 300 meters and then sped up and took gold.

  • This is what my coach told me to run. Don't try to run the second one slower. Just run fast, and then try to run the second one faster (because the odds are that it will be slower just because you are fatigued from the first 400, because quite frankly, if you are watching this video you need some sort of help).

  • The best way to handle this middle distance is EXACTLY running a negative split.

It takes a load of practice and experience to get a feel for that. I actually have one of my HS athletes who can do just that naturally.

  • Why is this man allowed to spew this bullshit? How can the so-called "expert village" hire a someone who knows knowthing about running the 800?

As others point out, the 2nd lap is ALWAYS slower (unless one WALKS the 1st lap.)

Hope no young runners see this misinformation.

  • first 200 meters: hard

2nd 200: slow down a bit, dont get too behind

    3rd 200: stride

    4th 200: give it everything u have

  • I ran what was then the 880 in high school. It felt like running a 440 for one lap and then do it again for the second.

  • So do "stryders" for the first 600meters and then the last 200 do a full out sprint?!

  • damnit, i have my 800m tommorow

  • If you want to run a fast 800m your first lap should be faster than your second. The only reason you see them run faster in Professional athletics is becuase they are running tactical races and going for the win essentially. This is often the case but you wont run fast if you do it.

  • the thing is... this guy says that you should put most of ur energy into the first 400...

now he's saying that the second 400 should be faster??? wtf..

  • love how he heel strikes haha

  • hahahaha. didn't notice that at first

  • freakin noob.

  • not even! the world record 1:41 splits are 48 and 53.

  • how good is a 1:49??

  • pretty fking good :P

  • cool :)

  • expertvillage sux!!!!!!!

  • Where is that guy from, seriously? I've never seen anyone running his second lap faster than his first one...

  • freshman's tend to sprint the first lap, then drag out the second, it should be the other way round by the time you're 15 or 16 years old(!) I used to kill myself sprinting the first lap and difficult to keep up 2nd lap, but by 15 I was waiting for the second lap (by saving my energy like the coach told me!)

  • Every proffesional runs faster the second than the first. Normally the first they get around a 52-56 and then a 48-52

  • I actually just ran recently and have another meet tomorrow. But in the last meet I ran a 800M on JV. The first lap I ran a 1:06 and the second a 56, but this video is quite all right. It would help out any runner that doesn't know the basics on it.

  • @Skateboardingisnot Not in record attempts, but often in championship races where the early pace is slow you'll see negative splits. In the Moscow Olympics both Coe and Ovett ran negative splits.

  • @Skateboardingisnot

it helps trust it. i do and u drop like 5 seconds at least i dropped 10 seconds off in sectionals from this thing

  • @Skateboardingisnot when you want to win bad enough, trust me, you will.. i did

  • @Skateboardingisnot Dude, thats what your SUPPOSED TO DO

  • @TehHyperPivot Idiot, negative splitting in an 800 will make you blow-up unless you're an aerobic monster (in that case you wouldn't be doing 800, probably 5k). It all has to do with physiology (which will probably take at least 6 comments to explain). But the real point is that you're effort level should increase as soon as you hit the second lap. When I hear the bell I THINK that I pick it up and push harder but in reality I'm running 2-3 seconds slower than the first lap

  • @Skateboardingisnot have you ever watched a professional race?

  • @ZOso319

A lot of them actually and the only time in my life I saw someone winning a 800m race after running a negative split was in a small local meet. Professional runners never do that.

  • I have to agree with greenstboy. Seriously expertvillage, who is this guy? All the best times, and almost every 800m the second lap is the slowest! They often run the first lap in 50-51 seconds i Golden league and other big races, if they hade a faster second lap it would be a world record, please, remove this idiot from youtube. He dont know what he's talking about!

  • Sorry, but this video is bogus! No real insights or good advice. And the second lap is ALWAYS SLOWER than the 1st lap, unless you go out real slow and lose time. Just watch any professional 800 video on U-tube. Who is this guy, anyway?

  • I run 57 400m hurd norm 400m 50.5 i runned 1.56 for 2 years ago maybe i should go back to my 800m again, and go for sub. 1.50.0 .

  • ur 400m time is average so is ur 600m but only if u can keep ur pace up 4 da last 200m will it be good

  • its the 12 year old again i triedso save most of my speed 4 the last 200 in 400m and i ot 1:07 thanks :)

  • hi im 12years i just wated to ask is 1:57 good for 600m and 1:14 good for 400m .. please MB asap

  • the four hundred is a good time a top club runner your age would do it at 1.05 , im afraid i cant tell you on the 600m

  • for ur age yes

  • i am the king of positive splits

    54 first lap, 62.

    yeah, 8 second difference

still breaks 2 flat so im happy

oh and by the way 400IH is def the hardest race to run, take that from an all stater.

im a 400/400IH runner so my splits are always positive wheneve run 800s, its just the way us 400 runners who move up to 800m work. i'm sure every 400 runner whose coach moved them up to an 800 went out way too fast.

  • This is true. but even tho ur first lap in the 800 is alot faster. it may seem like the second lap is being ran like twice as fast. cuz u gotta push during the last lap. cuz ur tired. thats how i see it

  • Odd you say that, because my school has a 400 runner who goes 49 but when he does the 800 he always runs negative splits. He goes out light and treats the second lap like a 400 and can usually pull out a sub 2:10 800.

  • only sub 2:10? for a sub 50 400 runner that's very odd. I can only run a 51 400, and a 56 400IH but still can break 2. Any sub 50 runner should have ease break 2 with that much speed and strength. I bet that runner if he actually runs it right can break 2 with a good week a 800 training

  • The 800 is a race of its own. The 400 is different in many ways.

  • This guy is an idiot the only true thing he said is that its a sprint.

  • All fast 800m times are posted with the first lap being faster than the second. That's how Seb Coe set the world record twice. Fast first lap, usually sub 50 seconds, and slower second lap, usually around 53.

Tactical races are almost always ran with a negative split. I've negative split a 154 and it was a very tactical race. That's just the way its done.

  • u ran 1.54 wit a negitive split?

fair play man.. wat age are u?? coz dats decent if ur still a teenager

    i run 1.54 too except wit a 56, 58

  • I'm 18, and yeah 154 isn't my best but its the fastest time i've negative split. I've ran a 152.7 split and a 153.3 open

  • lol wait? are you saying 1.54 or isnt your best? or 2 minutes and 34 seconds?

  • No Dip Shit 1:54 isn't my best.

  • im pretty sure it depends on the type of 800m runner you are... obviously they're are gonna be 400/800 guys, and there are gonna 1600/800 guys.

the guys who also run a 400 most likely won't negative split, but the milers can negative split an 800 quite easily...

you can't say the first or second lap is faster... it depends on who you are.

  • sometimes people negative split win they win races, but i think most all out races are done with the first lap being the fastest. I agree with IFT.. if you have enough left at the end to negative split then you most likely could have gone faster overall if you raced a little different. Although the second lap shouldn't be too far off the first lap tho

  • yeah if you run negative splits w.o trying to, you did something wrong

  • you have no idea what u are talking about, great runners always go faster the seconed lap, you have to go out fast but you cant kill yourself on the first lap. deeeeeeeeeee

  • first lap is always faster, you want to kill off as many runners as you can and keep your first split under 60. the last 200 to 300 meters is all about what you have left in the tank. but i dont feel as if he is completely wrong, i guess it just depends on your strenghts if your a more even runner or not, its very hard to have a negative split in the 8 if you are going all out

  • second lap is usually SLOWER than the first lap, sry...

  • the 400m race is supposedly harder than the 800

  • The 400m is no where near as hard as the 800m. I'm happy when I have to run the 400m.

  • the 400 is more intense pain over the last 100m

and the 800m prolongs that pain over about 250 or 300.

i reckon hte 400m hurdles is the hardest. imagine runnin a 400 flat out and tryin to leap over hurdles!! id say dats fairly hard!

  • very true.

  • i do 400, 400 hurdles, and 800 and 800 is definetly hardest

  • i know damn that last 200m hurts like a B**** LMAO... to "ME" it's the most painful event in track.... anyone else care to have a say on which race hurts more?

  • If you are an expert i think you would know that when kipketer set the world record he split 49.00 at 400m and the second lap was 52.11, do the math, thats more then a 3 second posative split. Its is clearly way more efficient to run a posative split between 1-3 seconds. The 800m is all about being agressive off the gun and working your hardest to maintain your form and fight the lactic build-up over the last 200-300m (depends where you start to feel it).

  • its true thats wat happens, but u ideally want to have a steady tempo

dave woddle, the russian guy whos name i cant pronounce (bor chikavosky?) and nick symmonds all try to run even

  • Yes, that has been proven effective, but also look at the consistancy of those three runners, they often only have a few career high points and they often leave their kick too late and come up short. It is very difficult to make up ground in 800m. Yuri Borzakovski didnt even make to olympic final this year and he won 4 years ago...very inconsistant. And dont get me started on Nick Symmonds, biggest hype and chocke ever. Woddle is cool though, i like his hat!

  • I think when he says you try to run your second lap faster is that, you feel like its faster when your running it. When i race my 2nd lap usually feels faster than mt 1st but never is.

  • aissy, u obviously don't run much and i wont hold it against u for not been taught right. You are very wrong about the lactic acid build up because this has nothing to do with time, its all about the fitness and how fast you are running which determines the build up

  • This should be on Funniest Home Videos. What a load of crap. None of it makes sense. Anyone who knows anything about running an 800m race would advise that the first lap is always marginally faster. Lactic acid develops after 35 to 40secs, so it doesn't happen after 600m. A good differential is 4sec between 400m PB time and the first lap of the 800m. Any faster than that and you have gone out too hard. This bloke is out of his depth.

  • ur, i may be retarded but if you watch a pro 800m race they almost always do the first lap quicker than the second. kipketer went through 400 in 48 something seconds in his WR race , the second lap was about 3 seconds slower. a slow first lap is more likely to occur in a championship event, where people are going for the win, this usually results in a slower time. if ur aiming for a fast time you would want to do a fast first lap, the second lap is all about maintaining as much of that speed

  • as possible

  • you're right bro... the first lap got to be always faster than the secord one, of course if you wanna run a good time.

  • this sounds lame my coach could probably train me better than this Video
