  • I have an AT&T 3G sim card. In my HTC8925, the 3G signal isn't very reliable, but in my (M88)Miphone, it works great and that runs on Edge.

  • The first iPhone is NOT capable of receiving 3G signals. That's like saying an iPhone 4 can receive 4G signals if you install a 4G sim card. You could put a 4G sim card in an iPhone 1st Gen and still be limited to only EDGE.

  • Running a speedtest from the phone's browser is subjective and does not give an accurate network speed because your phone doesn't require as much bandwidth as does a computer . To truly test the 3G network speed you have to use your phone as a modem by tethering it to a computer. When I run a speedtest on my Blackjack 2 it runs 500-700 kbps. Tethered to my laptop it runs 1.5 to 2.8 mbps down and 200-400k up which is the true 3G network speed.

  • horrible example of a speed test as, like everyone else is saying, a sim card that says 3g does not enable 3g capability with non-3g compatible phones. all sim cards only store your information and enable you to connect to a network. the phone itself harnesses the antenna that is able to connect to the 3g network band, or edge if it's older.

get an old phone like a blackberry curve 8300 that can only connect to edge networks and put it aside the iphone or newer 3g phone. and get a tripod.

  • @whiteflame802

Very true! Just like all current ATT 3G phone's will not work on the upcoming 4G network because the phones do not have the 700 MHz band chipset.

  • @whiteflame802 I don't think you understand the point of this video. I am testing EDGE vs 3G. This was the first iPhone, so it is a EDGE phone only. Better luck next time

  • @GadgetReviewer at 0:26 you state that the sim card in the iphone makes the phone capable of connecting to 3g networks, it makes a great deal of confusion when trying to understand the tests as others will be under the impression that the iphone is receiving 3g speeds.

i do understand the point of the video now that you've pointed it out, but that discrepancy will make it confusing for the viewers thinking that the sim card is the reason why their phone can or cannot connect to the 3g network

  • @whiteflame802

The SIM card in the first iPhone was 3G capable. All I said was the SIM can receive 3G signals, two seconds before I even mentioned the SIM I said, "as we all know, the iPhone is only capable of receiving EDGE speeds."

  • holy crap get a tripod already I'm fuggin seasick watchin this shit, what was there a friggin earthquake going on?

  • KILOBITS not kilobytes

  • None of those are the new blackberry bold wit att 3g speeds

  • the sim card doesnt mean anything at all its just what tell a gsm phone what network and number to use

  • Uhh on my sidekick I somehow got 2012

  • Because the sim card says 3G on it does NOT mean it will make any phone get a 3G connection. It's just a standard issue sim card that AT&T puts in all phones, even the cheap ones.

  • What's the point? It's like comparing a cable modem to a 56k modem.

  • That is why I have a Helio Ocean. Is 3G CDMA faster than 3G GSM? I think CDMA goes up to 2.1 Mbps and 3G GSM HSDPA highest is 700 kbps. It looks like HSUPA goes up to a theoretical 7.2 Mbps. All of these acronyms are confusing to the normal consumer.

  • 3G on GSM is W-CDMA. An advantage is that you can use data to tether while on the phone, you can't do that with CDMA. EVDO Rev. A and 3GSM HSPDA currently have around the same speeds real world.

  • I can tether and speak at the same time on my VZW CDMA phones. The call goes through 1x while the data goes through EVDO

  • I will agreee to that, just tried loading pages on my Ocean running Opera 4... Smoked iPhones speed

  • Ran 756 on the 5th floor of a 20 story office building, in the middle of the building near no windows

  • 3G is faster, it's proven. And when you get down to speeds on a real computer, 3G blows EDGE out of the water. I am waiting for a 3G iPhone because 3G also has better voice quality than the GSM network.

  • Benchmarks mean nothing. In the real world the iPhone can load web pages google maps, (ect) at or above the speed of my previous 3G phone. Add to that that my 3g coverage was pretty spotty (only in metro areas) and edge on the iPhone is almost always there.

Perhaps the 3G iPhone will be better but right now the iPhone is the shazat, I heard the battery life would be 1/2 with the current 3g tech, thanks but I will take the runtime over a benchmark.

  • wait he says the iphone has a 3g sim card and can receve 3g. then y dosnt apple add 3g in the next firmware update b/c 3g looks like it pwns edge

  • The iPhone lacks the 3g hardware needed.

  • ok the way the guy in the video explained it was that the software was the problem

  • I am the same guy. sorry if it was unclear

  • He explains that the cingular sim card is capable of 3g if placed in a phone with the correct hardware

  • o ok i get it now

  • 8 times as fast

  • tanks!

  • WOW!!

Apple needs to make an 3G iPhone soon...
