  • Butch Vig is such a brilliant producer, in the 90`s he recorded nearly all of my favourite rock albums (Nirvana, Sonic Youth Dirty album) and the stuff he did with his band Garbage was also fantastic.

  • I wish there was a program or a website that anyone could use, that allowed you to listen to Nevermind like Butch is here. Stripping it down to each individual part.

  • i have watch the full documentaire yesterday is was just so wondering about it that i have watched the hole docementaire 2 times in lesser than 24 hours.

    Sorry for my bad English

  • No wonder Kurt got pissed off by the mainstream sound this guy made it into!

  • @MUNT0N Yeah, he tries to act like it was all artsy his production, but get real, the music industry is all about making multiple layers, make it all super-polished/easy on the ears, make it loud so it stands out on the radio & suck half of the vibe out of it. They are a business.

  • Lucky bastards got the original recordings!!! you know dam well i'd be remixing the hell outta kurts voice, and those guitars!!! Dam i'd spend LONG TIME using that stuff to do crazy and creative amazing stufff :)

  • why is he looking down, it looks like hes reading from the subtitles

  • @TimB1234567 he's reading the tags on every channel, so he can know what's in that channel (guitar, bass, vocal or drum)

  • xaxaxaxaxaxax 4:34 and you get the picture :P

  • @nirvanafans1 i mean 4:32

  • now i know how they distroy good garage sound..

  • i wish dave did that snare fill live

  • sin doble voz

  • 2:52 made me want to get that amp

  • as is the name of this DVD?

  • Krist looks so much like Homer...

  • @Danielcg76 A shit you just answered my last comment... Kurt is God, Dave is Jesus and i guess Krist is Homer jk lol Krist is to cool for Homer

  • what happend to the bass player?

  • @666bosseh666 he got involved in politics. is still active in the Seattle community.

  • @mayo211 cool!thx for responding!

  • Butch Vig, you are fuckin cool. Please produce my next record.

  • whats the name of this whole documental?

  • @onimusha514 classic album: nevermind

  • BTW it's absolutely ridiculous to put that many guitar overdubs on. Two on ordinary distortion would have gotten the same exact sound which tells me this idiiot doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about or doing. Seriously, listen to the studio recording again. That's what really pissed Kurt off.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain Uh, a bassman and mesaboogie dont sound the same, bro. Let alone a pedal into a bassman.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain Almost any album you have ever heard has multiple takes on guitar. The same effect would not have been achieved by just two of those tracks. This guy produced one of the most legendary albums of the last 30 years, and you are saying that he doesn't know what he's doing? Think about that for a bit.

Any track I have ever recorded was a bare minimum of a Shure SM57 and a Sennheiser MD421 on one cab, sent to separate tracks. Really thickens up the sound.

  • Kurt killing himself really fucked up Krist, and to this day I don't think he is over it.. He drank a lot while in Nirvana and it looks to me today he is in full blown alcoholism, I mean bum in the gutter type alcoholic.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain I thought he was into politics

  • Kurt wasn't dumb, he would have listened to the final take and known what was going on. He didn't walk out or feel tricked or anything. He liked this album!

  • i thought that it sounded completely fine with just a single vocal track and a clean guitar track

  • i think its cool to see how they mixed the songs. its a lot more complicated than people realize. thanks for the upload.

  • i want a supergrunge sound on my guitar!

  • Haha I never would've noticed the squeaky mouse toy :P

  • DEAR ALL ROCK AND NIRVANA FANS, FEBRUARY 20TH IS KURT COBAIN'S BIRTHDAY. THAT DAY WE WILL ALL VISIT THE "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" VIDEO, LIKE IT, AND WISH HIM A HAPPY BIRTHDAY. NOT ONLY WILL IT PAY BACK RESPECT TO HIM, IT WILL ALSO HELP NIRVANA GET TO THE TOP OF YOUTUBE AGAIN. THUMBS UP THIS COMMENT AND REPOST THIS ON ANY NIRVANA OR ANY ROCK VIDEO.

  • @Thisiskuul Again? Youtube didn't exist when they were popular...

  • how come when I hear drain you the vocal doesnt sound overdubbed

  • My favorite Nirvana song followed by Lounge Act. Badass! I miss them

  • well I think butch vig's work on that song is pretty good...He has created a sound, he didn't changed the song, he changed the sound to increase the impact of the song.

and he made it well by putting together diferent guitar sounds

I don't think he overproduced... and really who cares the result ROCKS !

Nevermind wouldn't be Nevermind without the work of butch vig

  • what is this from?

  • in the version of the album i have, the intro vocal is not overdubbed

  • @VincentValentineXIII me to...

  • @VincentValentineXIII yeah mine too its not overdubbed

  • Nerds.

  • butch vig fucked nirvanas record up

  • @666AcidFreak Yeah, and if it hadn't have been for him, you never would've fucking HEARD of Nirvana. Just a thought.

  • @jetelegen ya i would have bcuz i listend to there underground shit b4 nevermind came out fucktard MTV made them famoous and shit

  • @666AcidFreak I agree. Bleach was, basically, "shit."

  • @jetelegen ok thats your opinion cool awesome now fuck off

  • @666AcidFreak Why no, I think I'll stick around and bait your "Gimme Indie Rock" ass. For my next installment...

Hey, wasn't Dave Grohl awesome on Bleach?

Oh wait, that's right; his drumming (an essential part of what made Nirvana a great band) first showed up on...wait for it...Nevermind. Go ahead and ask Dave Grohl if Butch Vig "fucked Nirvana's record up."

  • @jetelegen dave grohl thought butch vig overproduced the shit out of it too

  • @666AcidFreak Dave Grohl may have thought the record was too slick, but I'm guessing he sees the value in quality production (The Beatles are his all-time favorite). So let's not put words in his mouth, shall we?

Seriously, setting aside aesthetic taste: If you really wanted Nirvana to remain underground, rather than positively impacting the lives of millions of people, you're a pathetic turd.

I want you to know that I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

  • @jetelegen i am a pathetic turd then

  • @jetelegen - I'd bet my left nut that Dave and Kurt would laugh their asses off that you and "666AcidFreak" actually argued back and forth about it too. And then they'd laugh at me for taking the time to write this.....

  • I guess that's why it doesn't sound right when I play it...<.<

  • BEST PART...

    The VERY end!

  • @nirfelix

    classic albums

  • using a rubber duck, aerosol cans, and a chain is one of the best things ever to use in a song.....

  • Now it's starting to sound like a rock song !

    Pretty Grungey !

  • So.. fucking... good.

  • this is probably my favourite song on the Nevermind album. Absolute brillance!

  • Friggen Brillance

  • Krist is so adorable with a soft shaven face!

  • i think kurt said things he didnt really mean, but definately meant for us to hear what he was saying, not what he was thinking. He loved nevermind, so told us he thought it was too slick. He seemed to be a very pessimistic guy. deliberately pessimistic. i think he was really an optimistic guy hiding behind this facade.

  • @dannymac322 cool story man

  • tengo el dvd.. es realmente magnifico todoo ! :)

  • great album, but all the integrity is sucked out of it. Kurt was SOOO disappointed with the sound and success of Nevermind...

  • @drumlord420 He was annoyed with how successful it got by people who only liked one song. Other than that, he liked the album.

  • @drumlord420 He wouldn't say he was annoyed by the success of the album, but annoyed at what came WITH the success of the album.

Plus Kurt had very strong opinions and was annoyed by the people who he disliked enjoying his music for the wrong reasons. IE: jocks, racist, sexist.

"he's the one that likes all our pretty songs, but he don't know what it means when i say, yeah."

  • @DrZaious Yeah that song wasn't about that

  • @dubified89 Yeah, cause I'm going believe you're word on it, after reading/watching interviews for the last how many fucking years.

Keep thinking Vaccines are hurting our children and 911 was an inside job. Actually quit watching Fox News.

  • that is fucking cool

  • lol I never would have imagined squeaky toys in the break of this song.

  • this is fucking genius

butch seems like a really cool guy

  • Funny thing is Kurt had said later that he didn't like the sound of Nevermind,

"too slick". But that might have been the contrarian in him.

    I think it sounds phenomenal.

  • R.I.P KURT :(

  • youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • quite a chorus effect on the double tracked effect! didnt ever regonise that shit! very thick and big!!

  • Despues de la parte intermedia viene el ORGASMO!!

  • @rafarush45 jajajaja es cierto!

  • People who make commercials are the lowest form of life and they should stay off Youtube.

  • Drain you Has "Something" that makes you Shiver, Specially at 2:31 After de Middle

  • I'm glad that Dave talked about Sonic Youth! Drain You always reminded me of Silver Rocket and Starpower!

  • @sensei021281 I agree!

  • we all know the ongs on this album are "overproduced," but there are some songs that make the overproduced part way better. but some songs could gone with out the produced. this album is great. get over each other.

  • miss you Kurt...

  • kurt said himself that he hated the album nevermind

  • I bet it's because this douche kept tricking him to make it sound more "studio".

  • @punk9999643

Honestly, I'm happy this "douche" had his way "tricking" Kurt. Nevermind may sound overproduced sometimes, but it's nothing short of an amazing album. Without this polished quality, I don't think so many people would have given it the chance it deserved. Nirvana falling prey to "underground exclusivism" would be a fucking waste, like chanelling energy from a power plant to light up a pair of matches.

  • @HomingMissiles

I completely agree with you. I REALLY can't stand it when people,oh so badly, want the artists to sound like their still recording from their garage. If it wasn't for this "douche"

  • Whoops...

"Douche" Butch Vig(same producer who later worked on Siamese Dream), Nirvana would'nt be able to achieve their signature sound quite as good. Not to mention this is up there as their greatest album, probably second next to In Utero in my opinion...

  • right. nirvana had really good songs but everyone has to admit.....as powerful they where....live they were really really sloppy. ok, now everyone is going to rip me apart "because oh thats the whole point" but you CAN have a good productione while you can do amazing songs. the whole we to do crappy sounding records to remain true bores me to death. nevermind ist still used as reverence in studios to show newbies who it is done and what you can do in a studio.

  • I think it was more of Kurt being apathetic and not really putting too much effort into consistently good performances. He just came out and sang, and sometimes it sounded great, like Reading Festival/Live and Loud, and sometimes it didnt. Was just raw energy...

  • @HomingMissiles WOW!!!!!! Thank god you get it. Nevermind for the most part was Kurts making. Yet it wasint produced as he wanted.

  • dude some times studio works

  • @iwannagosurf

So? Its fucking awesome! Best album, their breakthrough album.

  • kurt hated nevermind except the song drain you it was actually his favorite song to play live

  • Really? That's cool, I remember reading that he said Drain You should have been a single.

  • i dont think i would seriously believe the angry stupors of a guy who did the whole afghanistan outgoing products in heroin

  • If he hated nevermind why did he make it then ?

  • no he just got really agravated over smells like teen spirit because of its popularity

  • this might sound really stupid, but is this from a dvd, and if so which?

  • Classic Albums: Nevermind.

    Pretty good DVD.

  • awesome

  • I know Kurt later said he didn't like the mix of Nevermind, but I f'ing love it. I think Andy Wallace did a phenomenal job.

  • This was Kurt's favorite song to play live too.

  • @RebelThoughts Aneurysm

  • Yes! Squeaky mouse toys FTW!

  • Sqeeky toyyzzzzzz!

  • Thank you very much for this upload!!

  • This guy is totally cool.

  • the super grunge part is awsome bad ass dudes

  • hahaha evrytime the guy plays the soung he shakes his head hahaha

  • of course.. he help create it duh.

  • Haha, lmao, I laughed for a while at that. Nice.

  • I've got one song I've recorded that has 2 track of drums....and ten tracks of guitars played at two different octaves with different distortions, volume levels and pans.

    Sounds fuckin' huge.

This is how big rock sounds are made on records. To duplicate it live means carrying a big gear rig with you, or playing the the most dominant one over a track of the other guitars.

Recording and engineering is almost overwhelming. There's so much you can do to change the sound of a simple song.

  • its all about mic selection and placement and what is the goal of the recordings you can go from one mic recoring in mono for the Original "sea of love" to 96+ tracks for meat loaf

  • One thing I like about Nevermind, is that it sounds big...but it retains a rawness to it.

There's enough guitar tracks to make it sound full, but not so many that it loses it's feeling..

  • Wow fucking amazing video. Thanks for the upload.

  • i think Kurt got the toys from his pet animals because didnt he have loads when he lived with his first girlfriend before Courtney??

  • dam i love that song XD

  • The little things like the hissing "steam" and the mouse toy are those little things that really take the listener to strange places in their imaginations. To me that steam sound to me sounded as if they were playing in some dark futuristic industrial factory or something with machinery and steam pumping and hissing all over the place. Despite the overdubs the music was made with simplicity, hissing steam noises and a toy mouse.

  • Krist looks like hes selling House Insurance...Must have moved right along....

  • Butch Vig is the drummer of garbage..

  • "thats pretty grungey"

god that word is such an understatement.

  • what's the name of this full documentary ? And where to download it ?

  • Yeah I was thinking about that too...

  • Classic Albums: Nevermind

  • kris looks so different after he lost his hair

  • Master of the obvious...

  • well, happens when you grow old.....you cant imagine how weird it is when you listen to all this stuff and begin realizing.....damn i was fucking 13 when i heard this stuff the first time

  • Here's one sound engineer who seems to know what he's doing!

  • Has Dave ever said he wouldn't play Nirvana songs agaian? I think Taylor would be decent enough to so his best Kurt. Dave on drums. I think it would be neat (and a real money maker)

  • yeah, just because he has blond hair and beard shadow.....come on are you serious?!

  • Yea I am serious, he does do vocals here and there. Calm the fuck down.

  • Butch Vig is easily one of the greatest producers ever. Siamese Dream and Nevermind are 2 of the best albums of the 90's, and he's the reason they sound the way they do.

  • When he mentions about kurt using squeeky toys in this song, its the same with "Oh The Guilt" at the beginning. I think he uses a cigarette lighter and keeps lighting it repeatedly.

  • he uses a duck call for drain you doesn't he?

  • no its this rubber mouse that squeeks when u squeeze it.

my girl friend had one and it sounded exactly like that... oddly enough i liked playing with it before knowing this song used that. Now because im a nirvana fan I had to discard the idea to keep moving forward lol. (sarcasm)

  • i love mixer boards : )

  • awsome

  • the intro should be just one vocal

  • I saw this classic albums ep before I actually paid attentio to them and I fell in love with all of it and the breakdown of it all.

  • mine too

  • This guy is the garbage drummer right.?

  • hes butch vig, the producer

  • yes

  • yea he was

  • fuck off grohl is a solid drummer and is good

  • you know garbage is a band right?

  • OHHH, yeah ive heard of them, i thought he was saying grohl is garbage or saying he was bad lol

  • Barely.

  • LMAO your a dumbass.. why did you favorite this video if you dont like the drumming?

  • 4:30 squeaky toys > :D!

  • Kurt is great but he was weak and wouldn't have gone anywhere without the right persons around him i think.

Dave was a big part of it too musicaly, and Krist on his way too, the friend supportive way...

Then Butch Wig help too for "Nevermind", don't think they would have ever been famous with another album like "Bleach"

Anyway, every artist genius is weak at some point and needs the right persons around him to have a good living too, cause being an icon is cool, but what about his own life ????

  • I almost wet myself at 3.13.

    'That's pretty grungy'

  • Holy shit miketheblueeagle, kurt cobain WAS Nirvana you retard. Dave has Foo Fighters but Nirvana was Kurt's...

  • I don't think Kurt ever said that.. So stfu

  • I never said kurt said that you jackass
