@mrceebees14 Because that was deemed as non pertinent information and is so not included on the transcripts. The important information is shown here; the attitude and altitude of the aircraft, the pertinent conversation between the pilots, and any indicative ambient sounds. Nothing else.
@Power1Productions1 your right....if you have mechanical problems on a car while driving you can usually pull over...or have some semblance you are in control of your fate ...on an airplane, you are hundres of feet up and if something goes wrong on top of most likely dying.,..your going to experience a 3 minute horror ride on the way down.
What does anyone lose by calling these pilots heroes? Does that put a dent in your bank account or does it cause you loss of a loved one? Why are some people so uncourteous? I believe they are true heroes simply because only true heroes march towards death without thinking about death. Pilots did their absolute best, instead of throwing up their arms and crying. If this is how they have been taught, all the better! That means pilots learn how to be heroes... Come on, have a heart!
Some people are rude and disrespectful of the tragedy of others. There were children on that flight as well and it's almost impossible to try and imagine what horror they felt. An adult knows they are about to die. What is going through that baby's mind? Or the mind of it's mother who can't save his/her life. Have some compassion people. We are still human aren't we????
Why does the annimation stop after the call for Mayday? It still had another 16,00 feet to go and there must have been more banter from the pilots. Wonder if they had a minute or so to do that one sleazy flight attendant that kept shakin her stuff everytime she went up to the deck.
If you want to read the full cvr transcript go to the ntsb.gov website. They called their maintence people in LA and they basically told them they were on their own.
In any case, They were trying to fly the plane all the way down to the ocean.
Even inverted, they were talking about kicking the rudder and putting out the speedbrakes.
The last words from the cvr were "ah here we go."

@CHOADspewer The flight attendant was not sleazy and Capt. Thompson and F/O Tansky were 2 of the best pilots out there. They fought that plane until the last second. They ARE heros, just like our men and women in uniform who risk their lives for the rest of us. In all the time I have been on youtube I have never said anything like what I'm about to say, but here goes...CHOADspewer and NotoHaters0, you both are FLAMING ASSHOLES!
Pilots saving their lives and passangers lives aren't heroes. They do their JOB. Risk of a crash, is a part of it. It's like going to an Army, knowing people will shoot at you, and then telling everybody, that you are a hero at doing your job.You choose this kind of profession, you know the risks, some of those pilots will face it. Pilots trying to stay alive??WOW. Thats a bumer!
@NotoHaters0 And YOU...yes, pilots know there is a risk of death but NO pilot expects (or should expect) that part of his job is to fly a plane that is so improperly maintained that it is, in effect, a deathtrap. We send people into the army, and they know there is a risk of death, but we don't send them in with broken guns! Capt. Thompson and F/O Tansky ARE heroes!
@261mylove Wait wait.So you know but you like..Huh.That wont happen to me.Technical issues is a part of the job.Guns dont work with 100% gurantee. They missfire. They break in combat. And yes.Sometimes they come in unchecked and soldiers die cuz of bad maintenance. This is life man!You go on the plane? You know you can crush.Same with cars.Army.And what not. When your life in danger you fucking fight for it.Nothing heroic about it.Its one of our basic and the most strongest instincts!!
@NotoHaters0 261 was completely preventable. I believe when someone dies in the military due to some other soldier's gross negligence there is a court martial. When you buy a car, you expect the brakes to be installed. When you fly a plane, you expect your employer to give you a craft that is not grossly neglected to the point that the probability of failure is 1:1. The plane was doomed the moment it left the ground, as were those I love. Capt. Thompson and F/O Tansky ARE HEROES.
@261mylove Is field medic running between wounded soldiers under enemy fire a hero?Or he is doing the fucking thing he is supposed to do and been trained to do??Stop wasting my time. Pilots trying to save themselves and the passengers are doing their job.No matter what the reasons of the crash. It has nothing to do with heroism.Example: Covering a grenade with your body to save others when you instead can escape is heroism.Being a a pilot on crashing plane has nothing to do with heroism.
All because the greedy corporate PIGS had to save.Save on this save on that.about 10 bux worth of grease is what brought this plane down.I say put the greedy corporate PIGS in a remote controlled jet and crash it into the ocean.(spit) on all corporate PIGS.
I have a problem with the word hero. To me, this word is overused. This crew performed admirably, displayed calmness "under fire" and courage. However, in my opinion, these actions did not rise to the level of "great courage" required for a "hero". To put it in perspective, they might deserve an Airman's Medal, but not a Medal of Honor or Air Force Cross.
@dhide14 Lol, ya think...? If you were in that plane, how would you feel......? Horrified.... U really ought to see the air crash investigation/mayday episode for this.
i was living in puerto vallarta at the time and was coming home from work when that flight took off. and i remember saying to my friends in the car wow if the wright brothers could see what they started. and then i found out on cnn what happened. the really sad part is i have made friend who lost a son on that flight. we really are only here for a vist.
The plane doomed because of a maintenance failure. The pilots did an awesome job till the sad end. They did the right thing. They tried to troubleshoot a problem wich could not be solved by them. But they did not know that. I know, they did not want to die, to crash the plane. That´s a fact. They were unaware of what went wrong with that aircraft. They just tried to do the best they could to safe the passengers, the crew and themselves to come back home. For me, they are heroes ! RIP !!!
I am an airline pilot and, because of this accident, we are told NOT to troubleshoot; follow established procedure. In hindsight, they just made things worse.
I don´t think that they had any chance to land the plane, no matter what they should have done or did. So even if it´s right that they made things worse, the aircraft was anyway lost.
If you are a pilot as you said, you know that the chance to land that kinda plane with this problem is nearly impossible. The MD is a -sorry for the word- "bitch" on the stab trim. I don´t think that any behaviour of the crew had the chance to safe the aircraft. They did a great job to keep the plane with that failure so long flying. There were some pilots trying to fly in the simulator with this scenario. They all failed to keep it in the air so long. So they a heroes to me. Sorry !
I am a pilot (as I said). I am just saying that, in our airline's training, this accident is told as an example of why you should not troubleshoot when such a procedure is not approved or in the manual. It may have been possible to land this plane if the stab trim had not been moved after the first sign of trouble. They were hanging by a thread with the jackscrew as it was.
I think both of us are right. In many cases avoiding to troubleshoot can help to safe the plane. But in this case without the order not to troubleshoot, the pilots did an awesome job. I still don´t think that they had a chance to land the plane. I read the final accident report and in my opinion an approach and landing of a MD-83 with this damage is a game of pure chance and very unlikely. I´am just saying that the pilots were heroes under this circumstances.
I worked for Horizon Air at the time and lost 3 very close friends that I worked with on the ramp in SEA..some of the banter here is uncalled for..have some respect for those who lost loved ones that might view this...I am not trying to be mean..but think how you would feel. Especially since it is almost the anniversary of the crash.
They would undoubtedly have made it to the airport if they had left the stabiliser where it was, but it would have been difficult manual flying the whole way then a very unusual landing procedure. It's understandable that they wanted to deal with the problem.
well that same procedue crashed a lotta planes. If you can't fix it from the cockpit then you don't need to know it. Flying along with a load of people on board isn't the time to troubleshoot a control problem. Bad decision.
that's the job... to troubleshoot, also it's kind of hard to land at an airport when you're upside down. they were trying to land the aircraft, at LAX. they were doing an approach and the airplane got worse and crashed.
they teach us in training to fly the a/c first & troubleshoot. They were flying the a/c and setting up for a landing at LAX, while doing so the stabilator failed and forced them to do procedures to get themselves out of an abnormal condition. You never know in situations like that if you can fix it. By your statement, you're saying they should've gave up and just crashed the airplane on purpose without attempting to fix the problem. Even though they didn't have a clear idea of the problem.
Hey beergut111, How in the fuck are you going to know that you can not fix a problem unless you try and troubleshoot? Man, I really wish more people in this world had even just an ounce of common sense. I guess Mr. Beergut111 here is too worried about drinking his beer.
you need to take some flying lessons then come bak and talk. How are they gonna fix a jack screw from the cockpit? you can't. But they didn't know it was a jack screw. Right, there is nothing in thatckpit that could fix the problem. They HAD control but tried to troubleshoot a problem they couldnt fix and made it worse. Ive forgotten more about flying than you'll ever know kid. If you wanna learn something then fine, otherwise dont waste my time with your idiot posts.
HA HA you sound like you are drunk know! They did not know they could not fix the problem until they tried to troubleshoot it you fucking moron. You say that you fly? So I guess you would be like "oh well" if ATC called and said that another pilot from another plane said they saw smoke from the engines? If you do fly (which I really fucking hope not) I would hope that you would try and troubleshoot the problem instead of just sitting their on your fat ass working on your beer gut.
I flew this airline a month after the dissaster to Cabo St. Lucas Mexico and then back to L.A from Puerto Vallarta same airplane MD-80..man i was shitting on my pants just to think the same plane felt..but it was a work related!!! RIP to the passengers
As long as there are mostly minorities on the flight - I would gladly die in a crash. It would benefit society, and I would be a hero of the Soviet Union.
wow u sound like a dumb ass. are u serious?? lol i bet u wouldnt have the balls to say that to the world. u would be surprised how many "white" people would be joining in as the blacks kicked ur sorry little ass
flt 261 was an MD-80 Aircraft, because I remember that I wouldn't fly on one for months after that crash... also, they checked that model due to the specific stabilizers on the tail.
Basically, what happened was that the jackscrew that controlled the elevator located on top of the vertical stabilizer had failed due to improper maintenance; the jackscrew which manipulated this control surface was not lubricated when it should have been.
But, the fact that McDonnell-Douglas did not design a dual jackscrew for redundancy was cited as a factor in the investigation, if memory serves me.
However, the MD-80 series is a safe aircraft so long as all required service is performed.
Wow. I hate the news... I watched the news report and they said is was a 737. Way to have false info on the news. I think the NTSB would know. Sorry about that!
I really doubt that anyone would confuse a Boeing 737 for a McDonnel DOuglas Boeing MD83 expecially on a new report, But whatever I have been know to be wrong before
But, of course, that was an MD-83, which is part of the MD-80 series.
For one, the engines in a Boeing 737 series are located on the wings while, on an MD-80 series, the engines are mounted on the fuselage behind the wings.
In addition, the 737 does not have the elevator on top of the vertical stabilizer like it does on the MD-80 series.
Please log on to the NTSB's site and search for the report and presentation of this incident. You will see that this video animation is from the actual NTSB presentation.
I think that the thump was the horizontal stablizer letting go. If this is the accident I remember, the trim jackscrew came out of the block due to lack of lubrication. The primary trim motor kept popping the breaker. I think the backup motor was used to drive the screw until the horizontal tail failed. By the way, I'll fly Boeing or McDonnell Douglas EIGHT days a week BEFORE I'll fly Airbus.
Please log on to the NTSB's site and search for the report on flight 261, and presentation of this incident. You will see that this video animation is from the actual NTSB presentation.
you also have to remember Boeing has been around LONGER than Airbus and Boeing is flown MORE than airbus is. The 737 is THE most popular shot-long haul aircraft for many airlines. Boeing has outsold airbus on several aircrafts. It's not unlikely that Boeing is going to have more incidents than Airbus would.
yeah....good thing this wasnt a B737....and no they shouldnt have just "gave-up"....but by all their jerking around with the trim and everything just accelerated the end result. If they didnt try to fix the plane maybe they could've made it before the jack screw let loose.
R.I.P.......A HORRIBLE WAY TO GO........ALL BECAUSE OF CUTTING CORNERS TO SAVE MONEY......JUST AS WE HAVE TODAY ALL OVER THE COUNTRY......THE ALMIGHTY DOLLAR COMES BEFORE SAFETY AND HUMAN LIVES........IT'S ALL F'ed UP. I brought myself here you dope......

I have started a prayer group - to pray solemnly, and fervently, that there weren't too many white people on board that fateful flight.

and i am going to pray that everyone that shares your thoughts will crash and burn someday alltogether

As long as there are mostly minorities on the flight - I would gladly die in a crash. It would benefit society, and I would be a hero of the Soviet Union.

flt 261 was an MD-80 Aircraft, because I remember that I wouldn't fly on one for months after that crash... also, they checked that model due to the specific stabilizers on the tail.
Phopchas 3 years ago
Basically, what happened was that the jackscrew that controlled the elevator located on top of the vertical stabilizer had failed due to improper maintenance; the jackscrew which manipulated this control surface was not lubricated when it should have been.
But, the fact that McDonnell-Douglas did not design a dual jackscrew for redundancy was cited as a factor in the investigation, if memory serves me.
However, the MD-80 series is a safe aircraft so long as all required service is performed.

Wrong kind of aircraft. The one that crashed was a 737-400, not a MD-80 or similar like in the video.
limitlessaviator 3 years ago
You are incorrect. The aircraft was indeed an MD-83. This simulation video comes from the actual NTSB report!
zenmachinefilms 3 years ago 4
Wow. I hate the news... I watched the news report and they said is was a 737. Way to have false info on the news. I think the NTSB would know. Sorry about that!
limitlessaviator 3 years ago
I really doubt that anyone would confuse a Boeing 737 for a McDonnel DOuglas Boeing MD83 expecially on a new report, But whatever I have been know to be wrong before
1337programmer 3 years ago
Sorry to bring it back up.

I think the pilots were incredibly brave, attempting to fix this catastrophe the entire time even when it was hopeless.

YEP...then we consider that the 737 has created more deads thab the whole Airbus Fleet in their service history:
The Killer Boeing 737: 4.779 killed.
Airbus: 2.018 deads.
PD: 3.272 killed by the Boeing 737 since first A320 flight ...IOL...still ahead of Airbus totals...
American terrorism: Boeing.

you also have to remember Boeing has been around LONGER than Airbus and Boeing is flown MORE than airbus is. The 737 is THE most popular shot-long haul aircraft for many airlines. Boeing has outsold airbus on several aircrafts. It's not unlikely that Boeing is going to have more incidents than Airbus would.
ERAUPRCWA 2 years ago 5
yeah....good thing this wasnt a B737....and no they shouldnt have just "gave-up"....but by all their jerking around with the trim and everything just accelerated the end result. If they didnt try to fix the plane maybe they could've made it before the jack screw let loose.
