  • This Video Kicks ass! I agree, shivers down the spine!

  • Shivers down the spine...sooo sooo damn good!!!!!!!!!

  • This is the concert tour that my brother and I saw the very same night that his first son was born.He had tix but his son decided to be born so after a couple of hours he and I went across town to our concert venue while his wife and family stayed at the hospital.Baby was fine mama was fine, she told us to go,so we did!Glad I didn't miss it!Sadly it is the only time I have ever seen Styx in concert and I'm glad it was before John Panozzo died.

  • @gringo, why do you make it a white thing?? It doesn't matter! People of all races listen to good music!!

  • A classic. Makes a great statement...when music was real and performers could perform. Styx was awesome!

  • Can anybody tell me where I can find a good quality bootleg of Styx from this tour?

  • @SuperDiamondDogs Ya really, I saw this tour in Portland Maine back in the day. Excellent tour. Still have my $5 concert shirt, lol...

  • Love Paradise

  • Many a drummer spontaneously combusted in the 80's..... that's why J.Y. had his fire retardant suit on.

    <<<<<<<<<<

  • In the early 80s white kids had a choice for

    a. Metallica, Iron Maiden, Ozzy

    B. Queen, Styx, Journey

    C. Ramones, Clash, Dead Kennedys

I guess that was a good thing for choice but the high school hall ways must have been a battle.

  • @J5MARLON We liked ALL those bands. ppl I knew were not so closed off and separated by their music choices. I have vinyl I collected back then from Deep Purple Rush Ozzy Queen Styx Jouney Ramones Clash DK all of that. incl Van Halen! most punks I knew listened to a lot of diff stuff; today's poseurs think punk is about being stuck up and fascist about their fave bands. punk rock is about being OPEN minded. the only real battle is in your mind.

  • @Madkre8tor Cool, that is really good to here, being that I was born in 81 and I liked all those bands.

  • Young Music Show!

I watched this program on NHK many moons ago (OMG, 29 years ago. )I bought an album straight after, and longed to see them but never had a chance until now.

I'm going to see them in Manchester this June, so excited !

My only wish is DDY and JY,TS to reconcile ...

  • Tommy Shaw looks like Dorothy Hamel here. Wow he looks young.

  • que du bonheur.............

  • super love

  • I saw this tour in San Francisco at the Cow Palace, what a great show!

  • Watch this and follow it with the same song from the 96 Return to Paradise DVD - it's amazing how much better they were 14 years later. Dennis DeYoung had toured with Jesus Christ Superstar and had worked with a vocal coach - Tommy had been in Damn Yankees, etc... they were all even better (and sober) musicians, singers and performers.

  • Pretty good video quality for being that old.

  • This is the Styx I remember and love. I saw them in concert last night in Syracuse and they were great, but it's just not the same.

  • @tenorspaz

Dennis DeYoung is way better than Styx. I saw him at Sea World down here in Orlando back in 2006/2007, and he could still sing his old songs just as well as the master tracks. Dude's in his 50s (and made fun of us kids who were just seeing him for the first time) and still rocks better than modern Styx.

  • @tenorspaz I Know Where You Come From. Can't Live In Paradise Forever! It Sucks Geting Old Doesn't It?

  • @tenorspaz wow this is weird I was at that concert too and I was just randomly playing this playlist and decided to look at this video and saw this comment. I love Syracuse and STYX!! I'm 23 though, wish I saw them back then too, you are lucky! :)

  • I was exactly at this concert.

  • Comment removed

  • I've seen this TV program in japan.

    and love this song.

  • wow! I've got this program (tv show)somewhere in mum's, but it was recorded on Beta and I've given up hope watching again...thank you xxx

  • I loved this whole album....Paradise Theater was great!!!

  • I got to see these guys 3 times before Dennis left. Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight and this tour, Paradise Theater. Pretty sure when I saw them in 1985 too, Mr Roboto! Then not till 2006 without Dennis. They still rock!

  • Raandho8, Blades of Glory starred Will Farrell and Jon Heder ( of Napolean Dynamite fame) NOT Tommy Shaw.

  • I saw this concert! Back when you bought a ticket and the radio stations hung around and threw out T-shirts and silk screened stickers you could put in your photo album with your concert tickets! I'm with Jeffmonicon, STYX ROCKS!!! Dennis DeYoung was a visionary! I am so glad I had the opportunity to grow up in the 70's. Before "Bum" and "North Pole" T-shirts when we were INDIVIDUALS!

  • When Tommy, Dennis and the guitar guy all huddle up, I thought they were going to all kiss.... Anyway, I love this band, paradise is like one of my fav all-time albums, and yes, I have it on vynal, a bit worn and I have not played an album since 1989.

    Kev

  • @MrBumpmen I have one too but mine is still in good condition, ANTIQUE STORES FTW

  • 5th row, left center stage floor at Baltimore Civic Center.....it was the best of times

  • Saw them during this tour, 14th row on the floor. Never sat down.

  • I love Styx but Dennis was singing freakin' flat, man.....doing it live is tough!

  • @fredthejunkman Rock shows that should emphasize both excellent musicianship and showmanship is VERY VERY DEMANDING! I definitely understand if Dennis De Young, James Young (or James Hetfield hehehehe), and Tommy Shaw played a bum note or two or even three. I know, I've been (and still) there.

  • @fredthejunkman No its not its doing it night after night, high notes are harder and harder to sustain cause your voice is tired. Dennis usualy is great

  • This was awesome! When music would grab you and throw you back in your seat

  • Great song, nice to see some old footage before the drummer died. he was one of my favorites.

  • Bravo

  • Remember back when you could name every member of the band, even the drummer. When the lead guitarist was as integral to the band as the lead singer? Have you heard any classic 90's music?

  • Shortly after this tour ended, Tommy cut a movie with Will Ferrel, maybe you saw it.... Blades Of Glory..."get that damn bird outa my face"

  • my dad has this album and he only played it once wen he recorded it onto a tape and that was back in '82. the album is in good enough condition that wen u turn it over theres a kool hologram on the back!

  • Dennis taking a page out of Freddy Mercurys' playbook.

  • @doable1 I always thought Styx was the American Queen and Queen the British Styx. They draw from the same influences and have some similar musical direction. Their vocal harmonies are as intricate and tight as Queen too.

  • @bpabustan Queen is a bunch of shit stabbers

  • @balkenkreuz66 And you're a cocksucker.

    Great bands, both of them.

  • @evilemperordude You're the one who likes gay musicians, so GFY

  • @balkenkreuz66 Oh, good one. You sure got me good. I am no match for your wit.

  • Damm.. this brings back memories in high school - during lunch in the parking lot...... listening to Paradise Theater from Styx, Escape from Journey, and Moving Pictures from Rush !!....LOL

Oh yea.. can't forget about Don't Look Back from Boston (my one and only 8 track !!)

  • shakenama - you speak of my time... and my bands! Are you an early 80s high school grad? How about REO's Hi-Infidelity and Wheels Are Turnin', Survivor's Vital Signs, all of Van Halen (Dave era) and Cheap Trick's Live Budokan and Dream Police? Boston was my first concert on the Don't Look Back tour... and Sammy Hagar opened.

  • @kellruss LOL - Definitely the 80's was my time. Would've grad in 82' (in CA), but took my GED in 11th :-)

You got me REAL jealous seeing Boston !!... Had tickets to see them in Minnesota in 95', but the drummer injured his back..

Don't Look Back was my one and only 8 track............man those were the days! :-)

  • shakenama - Nice... didn't know you could test out of HS early. Good for you. What part of CA? I lived in Sacramento for about a year in '84. Minnesota - still there? I'm in NJ. Re that Boston show I saw - I actually found an audio copy from an online Boston concert collector. So now I have a copy of my very fist concert - a rare thing for those of us from the very pre-Internet age.

  • First concert I ever saw. I couldn't believe how LOUD it was. What an era of live music. I had the LP with the laser etching that had the ornate theater design that reflected a million colors when the light hit it just right, if anyone remembers that detail.

  • Your so lucky you got to see them. I'm only 15 so I wasn't around for these great tours. I do have that LP though and the laser etching is really cool. I have these two songs posted on my channel. =)

  • @brazenhubris had that record bro...awesome

  • @brazenhubris I remember the album. I still have it.I saw Styx in 2008-they still rock

  • Zoo,

I totally agree. That robotoa stuff was awful. Paradise and the prior were awesome... what the heck were they thinking. Queen did it right, they transgressed from 70 classic to early 80's music. Styx did not make the transition.

  • paradise theatre was the last good album by styx, after that, they kind of lost it. i didnt really like killroy was here, or the other ones after that

  • This tour was the last one I got to see them do.

After Grand Illusion, Pieces of Eight and Cornerstone, it was a great show to go out on.The one major thing that this video can't show well is the pyros under the marque when everyone kicks in. I'm sure people a few blocks away werw wondering what the hell that was!

  • Geez he can wail those vocals.

  • I must say, this is the first rock concert I've seen with a janitor on stage.

The Smells Like Teen Spirit video doesn't count I suppose.

  • Paradise Theater: The last great album Styx recorded.

  • Good video but Jap or Chinese symbols ruin it. Otherwise okay!

  • This is EXACTLY how I remember the opening of the Styx concert in Little Rock Arkansas in the 80's ! My first concert and they are still a favorite band of mine....!

  • yeah, this was one of my fave concerts too! styx's music is timeless and will always be tops in my book!

  • I'm pretty sure this song is in my cheerleading mix... The Chorus i'm pretty sure

  • I love this video since Tommy looks all of 15 years old! Simply great stuff.

  • this song is so 80s! so awesome!

  • im 14 and my school is doing this for are show chour it is a awesome song and it makes me want to hear more from stykks and suggestions?

  • You're 14, You might ask an Aunt or Uncle if they are older than your Parents.

  • well one of my fav songs from them is that Heavy eta Poisionng. It snds cool, but yelling "overloaded on SEX & DRUGS, SEX & DRUGS" doesnt seem kid friendly. Borrowed time says "Let's get laid" at the end... Haven't we've been here beforeis good!

  • its cool it doesnt have to be kid freindly i just aprecate good music and my parents dont carer what is see or listen to

  • I love the 80s...

  • Man this just screams the 80s....

  • You mean screaming the 80's where they actually had talented musicians and showmen?...and heck even people who knew how to play instruments?

  • not to be meanu it w madei the 70's. The sng notthe vid lte 70's was good thugh. Thatis when KISS, Styx,REO,Aerosmit, RUSH was aond earlier bu all thosebands got big around 1978

  • I wish Dennis DeYoung would become a spokesman for CFIDS. Who cares if the rest of the band don't believe it's a real illness or that there's anything wrong with him? They're able to be ignorant about it. Dennis and the rest of us who are inflicted don't have that luxury. Come on Dennis! Speak out!! You were the best lead singer of Styx and your career was cut short. Tell the world why and help us get research for this devastating illness.

  • Remember when an album was like a book and every song was a chapter ? Musicians had talent and played their instruments instead of hiding behind them lip syncing...Oh for the good old days.

  • @winterover79: Damn right man, and its up to my generation to keep it alive!

  • @winterover79 I'd say that modern independent music is full of more theory and virtuosoes than ever before. You just need to be apart of the community to find it- Our revolution is not televised.

  • I was 14 (almost 30 yrs. ago) This was the first song at my first concet. I've been hooked on STYX ever since! It was an incredible evening I will never forget. Paradise Theater!

  • I was12 (almost 2 yrs. ago) I went to my first concert. I have been hooked and i hope it will stay with me that long like it has for you

  • ah wondrful memores. I below Mr. Tommy aftr show. (sorry Engalish not well) Wil never frget

  • Now THAT....ladies and gentlemen!!! Is how you open a rock n roll show!!!!

  • well i guess if your japanese dont watch it

  • The Japanese subtitles are way off, most of the time. :O

  • Love the band, love the music....hate the outfits.

  • This is my favorite opening! Thank you so much!

The old man cleaning guy reminded me of someone leaning on his broom from time to time thinking how great the place was in its heyday. So when Dennis DeYoung went home, and found out the place was closed, he tried to reopen it, but I don't remember if he was successful or not

  • This IMHO is the best Styx Album that there evere was, partially because of the artistically inspiring album cover, but it had songs like Snow Blind, Too Much Time on My Hands, but some that should have been popular like Lonely People, that One Penny Two Penny song (some fan I am, I can't recall the songs, but at least I listened to them a lot), She Cares (though it has a Carpentars bit in it toward the end hA).. The album is one you can listen front to back many times.

  • true that.i have the vinyl i just listened to it and now i listen back lol

  • That spaceman guy plays a mean guitar. The guy playing the broom sucked. Did you see that dust? Holy crap. He could have used a leaf blower if he was gonna make that kind of mess. I bet the people in the front row felt like they were at some kind of sick twisted Gallager show. But... But with dust... and music. But not very funny. Just like a Gallager show. Did Tommy Shaw cut his own hair back then? He looks about... nine.

You remember that high tech laser etching on that album? That was cool.

  • Comment removed

  • wow.

  • Anyone who doesn't appreciate Styx and the album "Paradise Theater" just isn't old enough to know better. Not a bad song on the album.... How I wish we could turn back time to the days of good ole' rock and roll..

  • is that a giant mustache over their name in lights?

  • NO, duh its the lights that are the same as the theater looked in it's heyday!

  • oh...bravo, styxchic1, bravo!!! never saw the old paradise wherever it was...hey, want a mustache ride?

  • tremendo show en esa epoca....

  • go ahead fool! make fun of the moustaches, perms, outfits, etc., but don't anybody try and tell me that this shit doesn't rock or that Styx isn't (wasn't) a great band.

  • well, at least they don't lip sync.

  • loveeee thissss songgggg peeecccceee

  • What I simply don't get is why is the group considered a band that appeals to generally women. This guy is a very good rock singer.

  • The only people that think that weren't there... all my guy music friends back then dug and generally respected them a great deal.

  • Really?? This is the first I have ever heard of this statement. I know tons of guys that like Styx. They were at one time one of the most popular rock bands in the world. So take your seats and don't be late,........................

  • I love Styx, but MAN that's some sharp/flat singin' live...

  • This is my fav video! I always loved Styx, I had every album they put out, and now I have a chance to listen to them again!

  • couldn't hear tommys guitar solo?

  • his solo is hard-panned to the right speaker, so that may mean your right channel is out, or the speaker.

  • Think Tommy Shaw looks like a little kid here? I saw STYX in '77 when he was still in diapers!!! Alltime favorite band!!!

  • is is thee best group ever, im a freshman in high school, and i have already seen styx 32 times<3 tommy shaw is still rocking hard!

rock on everone! and hey maybe ill see one of you at a styx concert... im going to the one in miford massachussets!! and that will be my 32nd time ive seen them! keep on rocking eveyone!

  • my dad has this bootleg on cd

  • DENNIS DEYOUNG THE BEST

  • dude what is with the chinese symbols?

    luv styx

  • good lord sorry man

    dang

  • Styx was a great band - saw them around this time in London, England. Paradise Theatre is one of the all time greats. Dennis is really talented and JY and Tommy are 2 of the best guitarists you'll ever see playing together.

  • saw styx on this tour in Greensboro, NC in spring of '81. I was 18.

  • sweet I wish I would have been there

  • I was a freshman in high school when I went to this concert. It was awesome then and it great to relive those memories.

  • Britney who? What a tramp! If she wasn't famous she'd be living in a trailer somewhere in kentucky or tennessee, pure trailer park trash!

  • Ah, try Louisiana, but you are absolutely right!

  • what the hell is JY wearing? lol

  • My brother went to this tour back in the day, and told me about a guy sweeping the stage, and how the show started. I was SO jealous. This is the first time I've seen it, and I feel like I was there.

  • Styx - DDY = Shit

  • styx minus ddy minus the panozzo bros minus tommy (for a while at least) equals shit. no offense to jy he's great but sounds nothing like styx without the rest of the group. u just can't have one without the other.

  • J.Y is way better then Tommy

  • so anyway...THIS version of Styx is the definitive version of Styx...anyone gonna disagree with that?

  • One of the most ORIGINAL bands...

  • This was the 1st concert that I went to. They played at the Milwaukee Civic Center and we had 8th row tickets. I probably still have the concert shirt buried in my closet.

  • I had a concert t shirt too from the Paradise Theater tour. This show kicked ass! Good times! I remember it well!

I was wearing my Styx shirt when I got into a fight. My shirt had too much blood on it so I threw it out. At least I won the fight!

Rock on Styx! Rockin the Paradise!

  • ive been a Styx fan since the mid-70's....James Young technically is Styx since he formed the band.....Dennis DeYoung is an ego-maniac, who instead of focusing on rock n roll he became way to enamored with themes and concepts.....I dont blame Tommy for leaving the band. Its no secret when Styx reformed they did NOT want DDY involved in the project....now that should tell you what a complete a-hole and goober DeYoung is.

  • Ummm, FYI, Dennis DeYoung founded (what would eventually be called) Styx way back in the 60's with the Panozzo twins, when Dennis was still playing accordian. They played school dances and church functions around Chicago. JY came several years later, the band was originally called Tradewinds then changed to Styx. Dennis DeYoung WAS Styx way back when. I, too, was a Styx fan from the 70's, even in the pre-Tommy days. (They lost me in the 80's-Mr Robato-WTF??? Dennis definitely got weird!)

  • Mr.Roboto rocks!

  • Yes! As does the whole Kilroy was here concept album

  • I agree.Dennis is a complete jerk.He even told Tommy in 1991 that he couldn't join together with STYX.

  • I swear,everytime I see Dennis and Tommy,they look different.

  • Wow! The full intro with Sade Street Sadie!

  • You see by this video why JY and Tommy Shaw left the group. Way too much theater invovled. Mr. Roboto was the last straw for the band members. Nobody can sing like Dennis Deyoung, but just sing don't act. Still one of the best groups of all times.

  • Tommy is way better than Dennis will ever be!And JY if he tries. But anyway Tommy is still better.

  • Love that song Rockin' the Paradise! That was around when I was growing up, and it still hasn't lost its charm!

  • Tonight's the night we'll make history....

  • VERY NICE VIDEO I LOVE IT.

  • Very nice video i love it.

  • ...Let's not forget Journey without Steve Perry!

You're right, cqsallie; some things can NOT be re created!

  • I"M KILROY

  • I hate to say this but they all look like something from Lost in Space!

  • First concert I saw - 1979(I think) - Omni - Atlanta, GA. I was in 8th grade and I thought I was hot sh-t!!

  • Classic styx is my all time favorite band. Wish they would reunite.

  • It is really up to JY at this point

  • I read an interview last year with Chuck Panozzo that he wants to play with Dennis DeYoung again. Tommy Shaw would probably be open to it. It is JY that is holding the reunion from occuring. JY always has been arrogant and cocky.

  • Interesting. I would love to see Dennis come back, but *without* replacing their current keyboardist (Lawrence Gawen). I realize that's just a pipe dream with all the chemistry issues that would happen, but to have them all back would be beyond awesome.

  • Life is too short to have friends bickering. They should resolve their issues and reunite. They could still be a force to be reckoned with, and I'd love to hear at least one more album with Chuck, Tommy JY and Dennis.

  • Styx toured as "Styx" without Dennis DeYoung, who got the boot. ELO toured as "ELO" without Jeff Lynne, who got the boot.

Of all those great groups of that era, only the members of Queen recognized that the genius behind the group couldn't be adequately replaced, no matter how brilliant the members.

I can't fathom Styx without DeYoung, or ELO without Lynne. I'm learning to accept Queen without Mercury....

  • Trust me. Dennis DeYoung would've ruined Styx. No offense. I like Dennis. Just think he would've written too many ballads. Styx was/is USA prog band. BTW< dig Dennis' look in this vid. Short hair but still w/ stache

  • I agree with you all the way

  • In the 90's,Dennis did ruin Styx.

  • Definitely. Thank god he was booted and we got Larry

  • Larry sucks. He sounds like a damn drunken leprechaun. Him replacing Dennis DeYoung when he was WRONGFULLY FIRED was as bad as when Ray Wilson took over for Phil Collins in Genesis when Phil left (PC left Genesis in an amicable way in 1995 due to geographical differences). Thank God Genesis corrected the wrong and did one last tour with PC last year. Styx was best when DDY, JY and Tommy worked as a unit. Damn shame JY and TS want to make Styx a hair metal band now.

  • Would you rather Styx be a ballads band? Babe, The First Time, Don't Let It End, Love At First Sight? Dennis wrote those. Don't get me wrong, I like those songs. It's just that he should've been more progressive, like in the old days. Listening to him in interviews, he thinks Styx is HIS band. Did you know he worked with Liza Manelli?

  • Styx's ballads were an excellent counterpoint to JY's hard rock and Tommy Shaw's folk, country and rock influences. Bands change. Genesis and Pink Floyd changed and no one griped. Dennis DeYoung at least wasn't like Roger Waters to the point where he excluded members from writing. Waters barred Rick Wright and David Gilmour from contributing after Wish You Were Here (and Waters fired Wright like an ass). DDY did continue to co-write with Tommy and JY but Tommy and JY were on massive drugs

  • Only Tommy has admitted to being on Drugs. That is one of the reasons why Styx broke up in '84. Actually, most Genesis and Pink Floyd fans are sore that those bands changed their sound. It's narrow-minded people like you who can't accept Styx without DDY. Face it, he's writing musicals and touring with orchestras and never coming back to Styx. You like him so much, go see him and us Styx fans alone

  • John Panozzo killed himself with alcohol. For the record, those bands that I mentioned changed brought them staying power. I see nothing wrong with Dennis DeYoung playing with orchestras. David Gilmour's played with a cellist, a choir and with an orchestra since Pink Floyd went on ice due to changes in his personal life and no one griped at all. I didn't mind bands changing. Go and drink JY's Kool-Aid. Then again why fight with a fool like you who likes Britney Spears. I rest my case!

  • No. She sucks! I like progressive, punk, and hard rock. I also like heavy metal. As a matter, fact I like '80s Genesis, Yes, and Rush. Also like the new Gilmour CD/DVD. I just find out odd you dissing Styx for going on w/o Denis when he is doing his own thing. Tour with orchestras and write musicals

  • You have Britney's "Womanizer" (I vomit as I say it) as a favorite on your page. Don't deny that you like her and her music. For the record, Dennis DeYoung put out a new ROCK ALBUM called 100 Years From Now and it sold huge in Canada. It's being released in the US next year and it sounds more like Styx than the crap JY and Tommy released since 1999. I'm older than you and more knowledgable than you in music. Don't argue with me boy.
