It's called tracer rounds. Ususally an automatic rifle if loaded up so that every fifth or every third bullit is a tracer. They contain a small amout of phospher in the end so that one can guide automatic fire withour having to aim so much. Phospher has a nasty habbit of setting things on fire btw.
