As a local child, the story we were told was: When the Red Coat soldiers came by searching for the fugitive judges they didn't go in the cave because a spider had spun her web across the entrance. The judges were not detected inside. (This story appealed to me because I was afraid of spiders as a child and I felt less silly knowing the soldiers were apparently afraid of them too!)
