Before he was famous, at the age of 21, Sinatra went to jail. You know why? He promised women to marry them if they sleep with him. you can say what you want, but this guy knew how to convince people... doesnt matter by singing or by tellin lies! I love him! rest in peace franky boy!
When that wave of strings just eases you into the mood.......oh my god......heaven........pure class...thanks so much for posting this.......god bless
I also like the final scene in the 1998 film The Rat Pack where Ray Liotta sings this song. Looks just like Frank with the hat and smoke in the dark room.
oh my god I can't believe someone disliked this song... like... I've thought that on other songs, but this one's different... for real... ???? This song makes me close my eyes and just listen.
This is a great song. So is "17", "Send in the Clowns" and of course, "My Way." Oh, and "Summer Winds." But I don't really get why he's so revered. I mean, he didn't write the songs or anything. He picks awesome songs, true. But I think anyone w/ basic vocal talent would have done just as good. There are some singers that do transcend the music, and make it their own whether they wrote it or not, but I wouldn't say he was one of them. (His nemesis Sinead is, imho.) Great, great song, though.
This sums up just how good Sinatra is, how he stands above other singers. Its the phraseology, the intimacy, the emotiveness that he brings to this song, that others can't bring to this wonderful Johnny Mercer song. Not even Mercer can emote the song the way Sinatra does it. This is my favorite song sung by anyone.
How many people didn't heard this masterpiece... ? or didn't liked it ? WHAT A CONFUSED CROWD , What a poorness , what a darkness .... R.I.P. SINATRA !!!
One of his best...no doubt about it. Thank you for posting this song. I remember singing it with my dad back in the mid/late 90's when I was just shy of being a teenager. I'm 26 now and still love it. I actually just posted my take on this classic. It's nothing great, but, I tried. It's more of a tribute to Frank, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen and Nelson Riddle. The guys who made it all possible. And then you can't forget, Bill Miller, doing his thing on the piano.
@mjac4ever I don't know much about the era before the rock'n'roll era. But davies was kind of the michael jackson back then, he could sing, act, dance and everything like that, but Sinatra is probably better. He sang so deep, especially the capitol years where he recorded with the wrecking crew musicians. Another genius musicians also working with the crew, was Phil Spector. I consider him the best producer of all time. Spectors the best, i have to quit nowbecause of grandmoters talking too much
I sing this song every now and then with a jazz duo and I always have to start with the sincerest of apologies to Mr. Sinatra as there is no way I can come even close to this unbelievably beautiful performance.
When this song is over, you feel like you walked right into this guy's heart and lived every word of his story. Sinatra wasn't just a singer; he was an artist who created another reality for his listeners.
My three favorite sinatra songs I Cover the Waterfront, A Very good Year and this. Can't decide which is my favorite, they're certainly his most emotive songs
good lord. perfection!

The legacy is the music. Because of that, Sinatra has immortality.
