What didn't work? Carter era economic growth was much and much stronger than Bush (both of them). The big problem back then was inflation but this already was a big problem under Ford. Who solved that? Volcker did. What Reagan did was nothing other than big spending either (only on defense) and borrowing money (gigantic deficits). What happened was modest growth (2.1%) less than Clinton, LBJ, JFK, Nixon, Truman and about 1/4 as much growth as FDR.

Again shows your economic ignorance, most of the toxic debt/subprime mortgage debt was taken on by asset backed securities. Those would be unregulated and outside the scope of the likes of Fannie and Freddie. These are the kinds of securities that AIG has insured with unregulated credit default swaps greatly expanding the problem. The problem is a lack of regulation.

Look up the numbers, millions of people were shoveled money on loans that couldn't afford to pay, that IS a major reason for the economic situation, and if it wasn't allowed to happen, the economy would not be quite as bad. Those bonus contracts we're written up a year ago and the authors work in the private sector. Has nothing to do with the bailouts. What you mean is the Dodd amendment that stripped a previous provision in the bailout bills that limited bonuses (a provision at the time opposed by republicans).
