The label will sign you, and give you money right away (called an advance). Most of the time you will use this money to live off of and record the album (sometimes the label will pay). The label keeps all money made from music sales until the advance+what they spent to sell the album are recouped, which rarely happens to small artists.

@DamonRecordCo Not to mention that most of the time an artist only gets between 5% royalties with a major.

The label can further screw you over if you are just successful enough to make them money, but not yourself: often times the contract will allow THEM to decide when you put out an album, and when you don't.Basically, they own you, and you don't get shit.

Go with an indie label, or do it DIY kids. Better yet, be a fuckin scientist or some shit and make a difference, not some obscure rapper.
