  • lol he was out

  • look at the first base coach, stupid mother fucker LET SWEET LOU DO THE CUSSIN

  • pause at 0:07, or press pause-unpause until the frame before he touches the base... he's out.

a true seattle legend though, but he was wrong about this one...

im not a troll, im just sayin...

  • SAFE and I'm a mets fan too but you gotta love lou pinella

  • Lebron traveled in this video

  • Hate the Drake.

  • that was mark derosa who hit the ball my favorite player

  • I was at this game!!!!! It was hilarious!!!!!

  • nice footage man

  • dude hes completely out. pause just when hes sliding in and you can see his hand just about to hit the base when he catches the ball

  • @jalove31426 what video were you watching?

  • @faced12

    tinypic.com/r/14wgm0x/7

  • at my town game the ump looks at the base in the last sac and says SAFE NO TALK BACKS and HE WAS OUT

  • i miss lou

  • I miss Lou...

  • Runner was safe!

  • One more reason the Cubs will never win a world series......That and the goat.

  • as a fellow blue that is definitely a tough call, but in all honesty i would've said out

  • Clearly out. It might have been closer if he'd run through the base but instead of yelling at the player the coach goes out to yap at the ump. I can't blame the ump for tossing Lou for being an idiot.

  • spit on him lou!

  • out. pause at 0:07. ball is in fielders glove before hand is on the base. out. good call umpire. I bet he would have beat it out if he didnt dive. That only slowed him down.

  • safe by a mile

  • WTF? Did he just slide into 1st?!?

  • @CanadaIdiot - Every base counts, since baseball is normally a lower scoring game. So if the Cubs needed a base runner, I would've been pissed as a manager if he didn't slide.

  • @BullzOnParade17 Its a force out though...sliding just slows you down.

  • @CanadaIdiot - Very true, but diving for the base will get him there faster than running would.

  • @BullzOnParade17 I believe he he slid feet first which slows you down

  • @CanadaIdiot - Watch the video again, he dives.

  • @BullzOnParade17 actually thats not true at all.

  • @ForTheWeekRocks - How so? I guess if we went with that train of thought, it's stupid for fielders to dive for the ball, because they could just run to it instead. How does diving not give you the extra reach in a shorter amount of time than trying to leg it out?

  • @BullzOnParade17

Because you actually have to slow down to slide into a base. The only reason to slide into a base is to avoid a tag or to avoid over-running the base. Since a tag at first is rarely an issue...and you're ALLOWED to overrun first base...it's stupid to dive into first base.

It's NOT the same as a fielder diving for a ball, because getting to the ball is only one aspect. Sometimes, a fielder has to dive to put himself into the best position to reach the ball with his glove.

  • @speedyspooley - How does one slow down to slide into a base? It's not like he was sliding feet first, which you do have to slow down to get into position, he dove for the base. Last time I checked, leaping for something will get you to where you want to go faster than trying to run it out.

  • You guys should have seen Lou's meltdowns back when he coached the Mariners, back at the Kingdome. I was at a game where the runner was obviously out, Lou stormed onto the field, threw his hat on the ground, got ejected, picked up first base and threw it over right field wall. It was AMAZING :D

  • Lou Piniella is awesome. Im gonna miss his and Bobby Cox's rants at the umps and ejections.

  • why on earth did he slide?

  • The only entertaining part of baseball.

  • Go CUBS!!!

  • Baseball season comin soooon let's go YANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol little Lou... Reds fan here.. what a traitor... ( hate him) he was acceptable untill he joined the Cubs... great manager... 1990 manager of Reds terrible man though..

  • @snapppo

He'll always be a Yankee. I must have seen him get 6 hits by throwing the bat at the ball. Played his position well, good arm. The time he couldn't see the ball on a high pop to right was the best, he deeked the runners with his hands up in the air like he was going to catch it, all the while yelling to the center fielder "I can't see it, I can't see it". He held the runners and the Yankees won, ...................as usual. :)

  • and manager

  • As a huge angels and dodgers fan its sad to see him go he was a great player

  • He is gunna be missed I loved his ejections Kick the dirt i love it i wish u could hear what he was saying

  • Never mess with umpires. Being an umpire myself for 7years some my biggest thrills is when I tell a coach "YOUR OUT OF HERE" it never get old but tossing coachs and now fans out is why you never mess with umpiers

  • @Kilian127 Yea that's only "talent" you guys have, throwing shit out!!! So much for garbage these days

  • YOU'RE OUTTA HERE, LOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Damn i miss the old lou

  • He was out. I recorded it and watched it in slow-mo. hand just has dirt as glove has ball

  • Are baseball umpires also called refs? Just curious, b/c someoen claiming to be a baseball ref seems a little awkward to me. Like calling yourself a basketball umpire...you kinda lose credibility.

  • @ltsgoyanks ltsgoyanks they are called umps not refs

  • why did he slide into first, he'da been better off running full speed all the way through, no?

  • Damn. That play is close. I can't even tell if he's safe or not. When the ball reaches the glove the bag is covered in a dirt cloud

  • Poor lou pinella such a good manager and the cubs played like shit for him on his last day. I'm a sox fan but i respect him. It was sad seeing him in the postgame show. Godspeed Lou!

  • Bye Lou Pinella, you're going to be missed in baseball.

  • He was safe?

  • he would have been safe had he ran through first base... a major leaguer like him should know better... idiot

  • @nybombs that's why the cubs suck

  • @nybombs you don't know nothing

  • Damn he came out of nowhere after the first base coach and bam the crowd louuuuuuuuuuuuuu! ahhahaha

  • the idiot slid into first haha

  • gotta love lou

  • he was out, by sliding it actually slows the runner down..also it's the cubs...the biggest loser franchise in all of sports.

  • There is such a thing as two events happening at the same space and time in the human experience. True it might not actually be a tie on the molecular level but detected by the human eye it is infact happening at the same time. Powned.

  • safe

  • wow ok im a ref at baseball and his call was fuking parfect if i was in his potition i would kiked out the fuking 2 coach omgg

  • @julien4164 You're a ref?? it's called an umpire, learn how to spell and not suck at life.

  • Lou Pinella getting his guinea up!

    Classic,,,,Love ya Lou

  • Go Cards!!

  • he's safe actually.

  • @metaphoria3 just curious but on what basis is he safe.

  • @TriniBoi13 his hand was in.

  • @metaphoria3 his hand hit the base at the same time the 1st baseman caught the ball making it an out. the runner has to beat the throw on a force.. he only tied if anything.... RULE 7.01

  • @TriniBoi13 Funny I always thought the tie went to the runner...

  • @metaphoria3 biggest misconception of baseball. Show me where it says that in the rule book. It ACTUALLY reads that the runner has to BEAT the throw. So if there ever was a tie in baseball, it would mean the runner did not beat the throw and is therefore out. However, there's not such thing as a tie.

  • @metaphoria3 pause at 0.08

  • @TriniBoi13 yeah his fingers are on the base...under the dirt.

  • Comment removed

  • back when lou cared about winning

  • Totally out

  • he's out!!!!!!!!!!

  • I'm sorry I meant can't

  • I tried pausing it when the first baseman caught the ball but if you do, the dirt cause when he dove into first base makes the hand dissapear so you can see his hand. That was a tough call.

  • ohhhhh cubbies! i went to wrigley and none of this shit happened when i was there :(

  • he was out

  • i was there

  • I love my cubs but that was a good call by the ump slow the play down

  • close play, but the runner kicked up a lot of dirt. yet another reason not to slide into first

  • Lou ran out like an old lady, and he forgot his cane.

  • I am a true cubs fan and a lover of the game of baseball i have played for 15 years and i am turning 19 next month. I looked at this video and i am sorry cubies but he was out about 6 inchs short lol thats what she said

but yea he was out i still love you cubs

Cubs for 2010 World Series Champs

  • @andy66linemen Sorry, but the Cubs will choke and fail likethey always do and the CARDINALS WILL WIN IT!

  • @oOoOoBarracuda no, the first base coach threw his helmet, I was at the game, and there's no way you can possibly see it from this video

  • Pause at 0:08 and you'll see that the first baseman's got the ball and the runner is still half a foot from the bag. Good Call

  • 8==D  0rz -

  • you cant slide on 1st base is too dangerous so thats why

  • I like on how the other Umps just take a very slowwwwwwww walk to the confrontation

  • It looks bang bang, but the dude wasn't 100% safe. I don't see why the 1st base coach flipped his shit like that. He should have been ejected. Piniella probably just said one of the magic words to get himself tossed.

  • I think the runner started to fall so he acted like he was sliding

  • Woo go Marlins :D

  • i don't know why people are saying safe, i paused it at 00:08 and see the ball entered the glove before his hand touched first base

  • i freezed framed it and its a tie so it goes to the runner...he is safe

  • @dublecc24 Rules say the runner has to beat the throw so if there was such a thing as tie, he would be out.

  • I wish you had the audio for this!

  • @DaddyFreddie The radio or TV call?

  • @davidm8985

I wish Lou would have been wired that day and you had the audio captured.

  • @davidm8985 I would say both

  • Why would you slid at first base?

  • @bbyao06 IDK there was no reason, unless he wanted to get to the bag slower.

  • This was the worst call in baseball history.

  • @13SuperKings

it was a close play; millions of more obvious calls out there.

  • He was safe.

  • They need to make a DVD of all of Lou's meltdowns. I'd buy 1000 copies.

  • Its a close play..

  • i was at that cubs game and i was about to run on the fucking field and whoop that lil pussy as ump. he had no right to eject lou in the first place. the whole fucking crowd went crazy gooo lou!!!!

  • Lou implied after the game that he wasn't going out to argue the call but to restrain the ejected first base coach Matt Sinatro. He said that the umpire, Rob Drake, ejected him when Piniella asked "Why are you so antagonistic?" Drake gave ejected Piniella earlier in the 2008 season and Piniella might have brought up that issue in this game and so pissed Drake off.

  • Two things...good got the umpire didn't even listen to the first base coach sinatro before throwing him out...secondly im a cards fan but I have so much respect for Lou. If i were to play baseball I would want him as a manager. He stands up for his players...something i wish LaRussa would do more often.

  • It is pretty clear that he was safe. Bad call!

  • @Dashingdavaroo He was out, grab some pine MEAT!!!!

  • The reason this umpire is a "PRO" umpire is for this type of reason. Clearly one of the best calls I've seen. And Im a Cubs fan. Pause at 00:08. But like I said umpires don't get to pause, slow mow, rewind, they have to call it how they see it. GREAT CALL!

  • If DeRosa hadn't slid into 1st, he'd be safe. No doubt about it. Why some major leaguers continue to go against common knowledge is beyond me. If I were Lou, I'd discipline DeRosa.

  • He was safe. and Rob Drake is an asshole. I'm a sox fan and he's made bad calls against the sox, cubs and a couple of other teams I've seen.

  • close, but he was out. Pause at about :08

  • it's okay...the Cubs still suck

  • What did Lou say that got him ejected?

  • SAFE!

  • i beleivie thatyou cant slide in to first base im sure

  • @acboy40 Sliding into first base technically isn't against the rules, but you rarely ever see it happen. You're allowed to overrun first base only which keeps your momentum going, that's why you rarely ever see slides. I'm not sure why in this particular case he slid.

  • Safe u who don't agree reply to me

  • he is safe lol watch it a couple times his hand like jerks back from the base before he catches it

  • who was this ump? hes a doouschebag from what i remember

  • Whether or not the call was right or wrong, remember that the umpire's call is final. On that point, if you go frame-by-frame, the call was correct, the runner was indeed out.

Oh, and while we're on the subject of rules... Did you know it's against the rules of baseball for fans to throw ANY object onto the field of play? That includes, incidentally, BASEBALLS hit by the other team. That's right, Cubs fans, don't complain that the umpire got a call wrong until you follow the rules. That is all.

  • he was out and the manager shouldnt argue on a close play like that

  • He was clearly safe if u don't agree than u can suck it

  • @ThePman1209 he was out

  • the guy was out...it was close though and i'm sure lou had a better view from the other side of the field.

  • he was out. its pretty clear

  • It is funny because tie goes to the defense, it is a misconception that the tie goes to the runner.

  • I love how the umpire ejects him before he is even in his face!

  • piniella gettin after it

  • he probably wanted to be tossed, so he can go home early

  • Lou is priceless

  • how can anyone tell at that speed?

  • You blew a call and two coaches have to leave?

  • right call. look closely in slow mo.

  • @redverter First off it's the wrong angle, and bad camera work but hey they're at the game having fun. You have to stop drinking, you missed it. I watched it and it was blown. You also missed my point as well. Well that's the magic of baseball. I see something, you see something else.

  • People arguing over the call and mlb rules over a year after this play happened are forgetting the most important baseball rule: that ultimately, it's the ump's call, not every shithead fan's.

  • Also, that wasn't a tie. It was a good call.

  • A tie does not go to the runner. Nowhere is it written that that is the case. It's just one of those rule of thumb type things.

  • actually omar i am an ump!!! i've been doing this since i was 14 and i'm 25 now! so thats what 11 yrs now! so i know what i'm talkin about!

  • never should u slide into 1st base unless ur gunna get tagged

  • i'm an umpire and read the rules every yr and i aint never heard of a tie in baseball its either out or safe! so if u believe that theres a tie in baseball yall r crazy! its tough to umpire when u have ppl not knowing the game! they dont read the rules and just make shit up! and tell u have to do ur job! SO I REPEAT NO TIE IN BASEBALL!!! HE WAS OUT AT FIRST LOU BLEW HIS TOP OVER AN OUT TYPICAL!

  • @Cowboy1522 K ur right bout the tie thing but theres no way ur an ump

  • Comment removed

  • it was an out.

  • tie goes to the runner cause, technically the runner is on base when the ball is in the mitt. so tie isnt actually a tie its safe. but he was out

  • @pumpk35 tie does not go to the runner. the runner must beat the throw. therefore if the runner and the throw arrive at the same time the runner has not beat the throw.

  • @kamden0305 and truthfully there is no such thing as a tie anyway.

  • @kamden0305 a tie means the runner was on base when ball was there....its not a tie...the runner is safe, the rule states..the runner must be on base when the ball is in the mitt, which means..tie is safe because the runner is on base when the ball is in the mitt

  • Where does it say that TIES go to the runner in the rule book?

    oh that's right IT DOESN"T

But players and coaches don't read the rule book, but they will tell you how to umpire......fitting.......

  • pause at 0:08 hes out

  • Yep, he is out

  • It's a tough call to make live, but if you pause it at the right time you can see it was definitely out. It was hella close, but not close enough to get ejected over.

  • 0:08 HE WAS OUT!

  • if it didnt slide he would have been safe

  • Out... Rob Drake right on that one... first one he's gotten right in a while...

  • by rule he has to beat the ball to the bag.. not tie it.. tie doesnt go to the runner. so if its close and you see a dumbass like derek lee slide into first id call him out too.. for thinking his slow ass can run out a infield single.. haha cubs suck

  • Comment removed

  • baseball comon sense in order to be safe you have to beat the ball to the bag not tie the ball to the bag and being a umpire myself if i see a player slide into first 99.9% of the time hes out. also in the rules it does say that you have to BEAT the ball to the bag

  • There is no such thing as "tie goes to the runner". Professional umpires are better than that, they watch the base (to see the exact moment the runner makes contact with the base) and listen for the ball entering the mitt. Either the runner beat the ball, or he didn't.

  • NO! Omg...No!

The rule is the runner must BEAT the ball exclusively, if he "ties", hes out.

That is one of the dumbest myths in baseball.

  • A tie does go to the runner. "A batter is out when after he hits a fair ball, he or first base is tagged before he touches first base." Since he's out if he or the base is tagged BEFORE he touches first base, then he is safe in every other situation... The other situations are TIE or AFTER he touches the base.

  • no at all, he either safe or out. a tie is not beating the ball. and cowboy1522 is right and correct.

and it not a thumb rule either. what is a thumb rule is the 3 feet base line runner makes.

  • thats not a rule. that is some saying they made up. there is never a such thing as a tie. it is wither your out or safe.

  • I'm suprised no 1s ever puched an ump in the face. i would LOVE to do that...

  • umpires are cock suckers. pathetic pieces of slime dung.

most of them are shit suckers

  • very mature comment....

Any way you can discuss this more adult??

  • out

  • close, he probably would have been safe if he didn't slow himself down by sliding.
