I was only 3 years old when this song was performed . I remember the mainstream adult population back then was still old school follow the man and a womans place was stay at home and take care of the kids .I can still hear my dad freaking out at the huge group of hippies that would congregate around the block from my home. My best friend had an older brother in college and hung out at that now silent park. They all where into the Frisco scene and driving around in beat up old 40s cars trippin

I read an interview with John Byrne some years ago when he recalled the Count 5 winning a talent contest, and Stevie Nicks - then about 14 - finishing fourth
This was innovative garage music from a banded headed by John Byrne (R.I.P.) from Ireland. Van Morrison and he were great Irish musicians who's legacy lives on. If you like this check out the "Outsiders classic Time Won't Let Me which is from that 1965'66 era.

big mystery laid to rest.. the singer playing the harp (harmonica) felt compelled to rub out the instrument directly into the micro phone like jacking off....this happens at the end of the fake girl fans and the non existent climax. .. i always thought it was rubbing the lower bridge.
A long time ago... the lead singer and drummer are dead now.
I was a kid then listening to this #5 hit on the old AM stations in Nashville... WKDA and WMAK.
At the time, no one knew they were listening to what was to become classics, For all we knew, we were listening to a kind of music was would be dead as dirt in a couple of years... like Disco.
Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck were not gods then... just guitar players. No one dreamed we'd still say their names today.
I had the 45 gave it to my son who has a band Velvet Rut in Colorado Springs they learned it and the audience appeared to dig it....great tune...Tom Petty covered it he must have thought it was pretty hip too.....timeless
Hello, I loved their album cover taken at Winchester Mystery House. I worked as a guide there in 1978. The house got a make-over in 1980 and looks too modern, but that's the way it used to look. San Joser
If you still live in the area? John Byrne was my father-in-law. We are throwing a tribute concert/ fundraiser in John's memory on Feb. 21 7PM at the Avalon Nightclub in Santa Clara, CA. Bands will include Syndicate of Sound, Chocolate Watch Band, and the rremaining members of Count V. It ought to be a fun night honoring the memory of John Byrne. He will be greatly missed.
I came here to look at this Vid cause I heard a young band here in KC rip this song a new one (interpretation that is) this weekend. These guys would have been honored. I heard this so much and often on the radio throughout the 1970's and I relized I missed the tune. And...I really didn't know what these guys looked like. Cuties them are.
This one of the best 60's Psychedelic Garage Rock songs. I consider this one of the first punk songs along with Seven & Seven Is by Love and Pushin' Too Hard by The Seeds.

You have my sympathies Heidi. I think he must have been a great guy. Funny thing, I got thinking about him the other day, I happened to be listening to their recording of 'My Generation' - lots of fun! Wondering if he was doing the 'chk-chk' as usual (not for very long on that track) Meant to go back and listen again to try and hear if he's doing any more guitar on it, or is it all Jon Michalski.
I always thought Ken Ellner sang everything, now I realise J Byrne was the man!
This video is a scream, and I absolutely went ape-shit over this song when it came out. Played the 45 to death. When I found it on iTunes a few months ago, I snatched it up right away & have been listening to it a lot ever since. Undoubtedly one of the catchiest, most hook-driven songs of the then-burgeoning psychedelic age. Fantastic!
what blows ME away about this footage is that the drummer is playing while STANDING UP.. that couldn't have been easy. There was a pic of the band performing on TV on the back of their album; the drummer was standing then, too. I don't get it.

I was 6 years old when this song came out--but I remember my big sisters dancing like this. This song and 'You're Gonna Miss Me' by the 13th Floor Elevators are the coolest songs. They both were played on 'Little Steven's Underground Garage' on the radio last night and I missed them. Bummer!
You're welcome - I hope my explanation was clear (if a bit lengthy).
I forgot to say that the key to 'cross-harp' is that you don't blow quite as often as you draw - you're inhaling most of the time! You'll probably notice this anyway when you have a go. Blowing out gives you mainly 'passing' notes. Most of the notes you'll resolve with, or 'wail' on, will be the draw reeds and not the blow reeds.
@zbelm Forgive me for asking but I'm just a harmonica novice who's trying to learn this song....Above you mentioned the recording was in the key of B -is it B major, B minor, B flat or does it matter? Thanks for the help! :)
@ryanspeed - Definitely NOT B flat!!! A B Major harp is what you need, must be an ordinary diatonic one, which is what anything sold as a 'blues' harp will be, as will most any of the other harmonicas. Although, to be pedantic, I was explaining that the B major harp actually means blues riffs will be in F sharp, which is in fact the key the song is in (if I remember right!). It's all to do with the 'cross harp' playing approach - any online tutor should explain this better than I can here.
In brief: a harmonica in key B is what you need to play along with the recording. But it may be easier to use a harmonica in key C for a jam.
And by 'normal harmonica', what I mean is the one you get if you ask for a simple 'diatonic' harmonica - any road, this is usually the kind you get anywhere if you don't ask for anything special.
For 'cross-harp' (i.e. blues-derived) playing, you need to (ironically!) COUNT 4 up the scale, i.e. 1=G, therefore 4=C. Thus, a C harp plays blues in G.
I'm not too sure about tab, but I can tell you this:
To play along with the recording, you'll need blues scales in F#, this requires you to play 'cross-harp' (otherwise known as 'second position') using a normal B harmonica (F#[1]>G#>A#>B[4]). As long as your harmonica is the right key and your ears work OK, you should figure it out OK.
It seems that 'the 5' tuned down, so the guitar tab would actually be in the key of G - so if you get to play this one with a guitarist, maybe use a C harp.
With which one? Both of the blondes are real cuties.
Have you checked out any of the YouTube clips of Hollywood a Go-Go, featuring the Gazzarri dancers? Those babes were the best go-go dancers on 1960s television, bar none.
This is one of the great lost gems in rock history. When was the last time you heard this song on an Oldies or Classic Rock sation? It's a beauty. And look the dancing chicks dig it. Peace.
Are you Kidding Me - You don't need to smoke or drink anything to enjoy this --- At clip 033 She is Super Fine. The guys do a great job - Lead singer is a character - sort of like John Lennon in his pre Yoko days Quirky and funny

Wow! I never knew footage of these guys even existed! Probably one of the greatest rock 'n roll songs ever written. Great video. Thanks for posting it.
I worked for the Federal Bureau of prisons for 20 years. The fellow playing the harmonica was an inmate at one of the prisons I was a Lt. at Cocaine I believe. Very nice guy and fun to talk with.
I have his autograph in one of my rock and rolkbooks sined at the prison camp in Pensacola fL.Now who is the idiot!By the way it was signed in the 1990s
Dude, I checked my facts before I posted. State Bar of California - still active, no disciplinary records since 1974. CA Dept of Real Estate - still licensed, no disciplinary records since 1985. One could not be an attorney nor a real estate broker in CA with any felony convictions in their past. So you are clearly mistaken. Maybe you met someone who falsely claimed to be him.
As a Lt. I had access to his records of criminal invovelement I also had a picture of him in a rock and roll book. This is what he autographed. He told me he was in the publishing end of the music business and had been since the group disbanded. I don't question your sincerity but its hard to be locked up in a federal prison without your identity being known. However you have peaked my interest so let me ask you did any of the group play harmonica on the recordings besides Ellner?
I was only 3 years old when this song was performed . I remember the mainstream adult population back then was still old school follow the man and a womans place was stay at home and take care of the kids .I can still hear my dad freaking out at the huge group of hippies that would congregate around the block from my home.
