Just one more reason why I don't answer the phone anymore. When I managed a restaurant, I had to field a number of complaints every day. And these weren't people I rang up at random. They'd come to me for service. Still, the very first thing I'd do, no matter how legitimate the complaint, is say "I'm terribly sorry. How can I make this right?" Customer service in this country has taken a nose dive in the last 10 years.

Telemarketers have been doing this lately it seems. Once I hung up on a telemarketer while I was at work and she called back and demanded to speak to my boss because she knew it was a business phone. When I told her he wasn't there and wouldn't take her call even if he was there, she called me a brat and hung up. I giggled for a good hour about that.

And my mom gets bad telemarketing calls at her job, too. A lot of them continuously call back if you hang up. The age of professionalism has left.

We get a dozen or so of these calls (not just cc merchant services) and it's a major PITA. The telemarketer lied from the beginning and at that point David was under no obligation to be nice and had every right to be antagonistic.

@cstrosser I think the whole "Chamber of Commerce" bit is simply a ploy used by telemarketers because it lends an aire of credibility to their organization if they reference the CoC. I don't fault telemarketers for doing their job but I also feel no compulsion to listen to their entire spiel. Business cold-callers are in a completely different category and I always listen to them and oftentimes will offer some tips regarding potential customers or improving their delivery.

If I tell them we aren't interested in their services and they "thank you" and end the conversation then all is well. When they try to push it past the 2nd "no" then my demeanor changes quite rapidly. It is law in my state that telemarketers must end the conversation when told "no".
