We all get things wrong sometimes, so letting certain people know they are 'not quite correct' is ok, but you then start to assume the role of 'Chairman'of the debate, which i think counters the whole spirit of the comments.
Yes. That's why I used the word "built". Corris Railway number 7? Fire Fly? Rocket, Novelty and Sans Pareil? Northern Rock? Tom Rolt? Barclays (iirc, may have been Hunslet) were still building them commercially into the 70's.
as the A1ST's press releases say, its the first MAINLINE steam loco to be built in the UK for 50 years - unfortunately a lot of media outlets did away with a crucial word.
Well, if it's the first mainline one, say that it's the first mainline one. I know the people who spent years having one of the others built - Corris No 7 - and it's a bit insulting just to say that their efforts don't count!
What? Were all the previous British locos second hand?

'Clever' people, don't tend/need to mention it to others, it is something which is gathered from others' interaction with the person.

All of their efforts count.. not disputing their efforts.
I have not disputed this... Sorry I am so inaccurate with my wording!

After all, we are just a mixture of people who love Steam Locomotives and hey, if mistakes are made, then so be it.
Have to make mistakes in order to learn from them, but I don't fancy having my teacher telling me that 24/7
(Unless of couse she is Swedish, around 23 and very strict)?
But that is another hobby!

Nothing personal by the way, I am sure you are a nice person, but sometimes these debates get so heated, they get out of hand.

"First ever new build steam loco in the UK"? Where do you think all the other ones came from?
ubergeekian 3 years ago 2
First one buit in the UK, in over 50 years.
conrail19900 3 years ago
Still wrong. Lots of steam locomotives have been built in the UK over the past 50 years.
ubergeekian 3 years ago 2
This was built from scratch, not rebuilt

YES! But it is NOT the first new steam engine to be built in the last 50 years.

First Locomotive built in the UK since 9F Loco 'Evening Star' which was built in 1960
The Last Peppercorn A1 was scrapped in 1966 which is what 'Tornado' is modelled on.
lioncurlew 2 years ago
Did you even read the comments above yours? Loads of steam locomotives have been built in the UK since 1960.
ubergeekian 2 years ago
True, but this is the first MAINLINE one.
Trying to be clever is not the same as being clever.
I get your drift, but you are trying to be so 'to the point', it is starting to get tiring.
I think some of the other people who replied to you will agree.
Perhaps it is just the way you are, but quit whilst you are winning perhaps?
