I think that Sir Clifford's pomposity would drive any woman away, and especially his high-handed comments about Mellors. In his eyes, it's better to have a cold, upper class clipple of a husband, than a working man who wasn't "to the manor born"! I think that Clifford would be unsufferable to most women today!
