I think the looking like a man thing is because of the harder styling that was fashionable in the 80s - makeup, lighting, shoulder pads, emphasised cheek-bones, short hair. Think of Grace Jones, for example. Most women with a strong bone structure could be made to look like that.

She said that she hated the modeling business and that she was in it only for the money. And she realy hated when people looked at her only as a doll face and nothing else. In her letters to her mother she constantly asked her if she could come home and not be a model any more but her mother always refused her, not understanding why she hated being famous.
