i think it's just how drums were recorded a lot of the time back then. all midrange frequencies, snare mixed way too loud with way too much reverb.

I don't think they had a real drummer until they released Crawdaddy. This does sound like a machine. The guy in the video wasn't a real drummer, he just played on in the video.

The same thing for me back in the 90s! I had every album and single, and even interviewed them for a high school paper but never saw a video until recently!

I saw them live twice (once at the famous Woody's, the second place I forget), and I could see what they looked like on their album covers! I'm not disappointed at all with them. Since 1988 they remain one of my favorite bands. I've just never seen their videos until a year ago - never really had a need to!

I think their records are amazing, but they were sub-par live. It was probably that inadequacy that doomed them.

You're right about their live show. Nice people, though. And about Erotica (to the previous poster) - it was an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Madonna's album, not the other way around.

Actually, the Darling Buds' Erotica was released a few weeks *before* Madonna's.

I was there in NYC with the band when they were doing publicity and promotion for Erotica - the record company knew off the bat what Madonna was doing (as did the rest of the world) and they wanted to totally capitalize on it. It was very sad to see because I knew it would doom the Darling Buds. The two album covers were identical! Knowing Madonna's track record it's debatable who was ripping off who, but it's obvious who came out on top in the end.
