Awsome video I have one question I see you are working in a tiled area. That is my problem, I tiled the back splash. How do I bring the plugin out, to place the cover back on with out the plug being sunk in the depth of the tile. Thanks
i am trying to replace an outlet that has gfi on but whn i open it going to rewire it this gfi box has different wires then here there orange one a black one and a white one but there is no ground wire and only on outlet and all wires from outlet match same wire but wondering how i do rewire it w/o cutiing from both from outlet and wire and do u need a ground wire or not i'm wondering before i go find help to do it
yes its a very old house, tube wired.none of my outlets and lite fixtures our ground. Not worred about the lite fixtures.I just need to ground my outlets for my computers and electronics. Thanks!
@ryanathan2 Ground wires play a roll that if anything shorts out that it had a direct bath to ground and not you. If i wire was to get cut say like a nail or screw, one the screw damages the hot wire and comes into contact with the uninsulated ground it should short out. if it was insulated then the path of the hot wire would go through you if you completed the circuit of hot to ground. No insulation on the ground wire increases the odds to trip the fuse if the circuit has a problem
@MrStanley1109 Yes you can. ground is ground. Its all Once circuit in the end. Is it old wiring? Ive yet to see a house wired with out a ground unless its Knob and Tube wiring.
@betsmur If the box is out of alignment side to side, then you just loosen the mounting screws of the receptacle or switch and shift it so it straight then tighten the screws. If the box is sticking out bast the drywall then you will have to cut the drywall and reset the box. If its just the corner of the box sticking out then i just file/grind the corner back so the faceplate mounts flush. Studs tend to twist after a bit and after drywall is on most builders dont care to fix it. :(
Thank you. So many videos but yours was the best; it answered a lot of questons that I did have and some I didn't know i should be asking! You're a great teacher--post more stuff!
When you buy a GFI outlet, be sure the reset switch clicks when you push it before buying it. These are generally much more expensive than standard outlets, around 15-20 dollars. Often times places like Home Depot will return faulty merchandise to the shelf, or equally common, poor manufacturing.
@YazatLane LOL I just returned one since my xmass lights triped it and the GFI would not reset. The girl tossed it in the return to shelf bin. I had to inform her to mark it bad and do an RTV, return to vender.
@jtjmsb well if you know where the wires go, the line comes from the panel, and the load is going out to the outlets that this GFCI covers, therefore the load side
You're a great teacher! I have a question. I replaced a refrigerator and the new refrigerator has a plug with the 3 prongs. My electric outlet behind the fridge is the standard 2 prong outlet. I put an 'adapter' in until I can figure out what to do! There IS a copper wire, not connected to anything, behind the outlet cover. Can I take out the 2 prong type outlet and put in a GFI outlet like the one in your video, by just attaching the copper wire? Can I do this myself? Thanks! Linda
Dom I have a question. I am a mom that may have to replace the GFI myself. I have no power in my garage at all an the GFI is tripped. I reset the breakers twice, but I have noticed that the black button will not push in at all. Does that mean the switch itself is bad? I checked the one by the fridge and it works properly but the one in the garage will not click at all. Please help... FREAKED OUT BY ELECTRICITY. it is scarier than a spider. :)
@heidifromokla Spiders aren't that bad. OK it seems like you don't have any power to the outlet. However I would recommend calling someone that knows and that is not freaked out by electrical. That's just how people get hurt. I kid you not. If you have to RESET the breaker there is a issue somewhere. Yes it could be the GFI, but still the same. Or send me in a email your number and I'll try to walk you through a few steps.
Thanks a million for this video and especially for the details on what the hot line and neutrals and line and load mean. Most of the other videos don't go into depth like you did. I used it to repair some busted wires in my parents home. Thanks again Dom! You're the man!!
Thanks a million for this video and especially for the details on what the hot line and neutrals mean. Most of the other videos don't go into depth like this. Thanks again!
Thanks so much for this video.......I studied it step by step and just finished replacing my own gfci after the last one broke.........I really saved by doing it myself and you're a great teacher!!!
The ground and the white wire are the same type purpose? Sorry for my retardedness lol I need serious help here and seems no one so far can help.
I bought a new range hood fan to replace a very old one. It is NOT a plug in, it is raw wire. Out of my wall are only Black and White wire, no groundwire! What do I do??? I live in a older apt. building btw.....would appreciate the feedback, thanks
Thank you very much!!!! After much hesitation and confusion, we came across your video and our GFCI installation was a breeze! The tester we bought confirmed our installation was correctly wired...peace of mind...Thanks again, Dom!!!
It seems like the GFI would work even if you did not have a ground wire, such as in an old house with just a hot and neutral. Wouldn't it still trip the hot wire since it is measuring the difference between the hot and neutral current?
Dom you have a very effective way of CLEARLY explaining!!! I am still re wiring my mom's house while I am the care giver. My Italian culture means gladly take care of mom, and make myself useful (God willing). To rewire this knob and tube (acually conduit and knob) I am having to do plaster repair and much other stuff. I read, watch videos like yours, and press on.You speak like a friend.
@dinoLomedico You got that right. I went through a gazillion vids on installing vinyl plank flooring. Though some were helpful DominickDiy was the best. Don’t know what his reward is, but whatever it is, its not enough. Thanks, and to dinoLomedico personally. You're a good son. Took care of 2 parents for 10 yrs so I know the commitment, but would do it all again to have them back 1 more day. Be strong & God Bless...
Almost perfect explanation, except you don't completely make it clear in your explanation if the you connected the "line" ground and the "load" to a spare peice of wire and connected that wire to the ground screw on the gfci. Atleast that's what I think I saw. Thanks
@signupsigma the ground wire is not insulated because it connect to the ground which u walk on every day no need to insulate it
On other hand the electricity from hot wire leaves and go through ur appliance then leave across the neutral wire which will have the same voltage as hot wire when in use
Hi Nick thanks for all these very informative videos, im sort of jack of all trade man (master of none) and your videos enchance me a lot more and approached each job with a clean results. more power to you man.
Home built new in 1979. The outside sockets only trip the inside bathroom socket. 10 yrs ago electrician did some basement wiring. The bathroom has NO RESET/TEST buttons,& will only trip the upstairs bathroom, (mind you this is about 10 inches above the actual SINK!!) He said it's GFCI & the outside were allegedly as well in 79. Essentially doesn't a true GFCI need a TEST/RESET? (Not identical as a regular) I purchased a GE tester but am afraid to use it upstairs(the only socket w/ TEST/RESET)
@thecityismine08 UPDATE: DONE W/ STOP WATCH- outlet/socket w/ GFCI test/reset=INSTANT , outside w/ someone inside monitoring about 2 seconds(on the high side), NOW Downstairs, that man can't call himself an electrician- SLIGHTLY OVER 9 (NINE) SECONDS TO TRIP upstairs bathroom, all of this was done using the standard GE Tester(same one here)!!!
@DominickDiy ... line vs load.. just to get this straight... I bought a surge protected outlet (with line and load on the back) I am adding this behind a flat screen tv from an outlet down below. Just want to make sure I add these wires to the line connection on the surged outlet *coming from the outlet down below.
Actually, just because both orange lights are lit, doesnt mean its wired correctly on a gfi recept. All it means are your hot and neutral are wired right. If the gfi doesnt trip, your line and load are reversed.
Cool video! After watching this I noticed here in my apartment that the outlet near my sink isn't GFI. Is that something I may need to tell my landlord? Thanks Dominick!!!
Well it still could be GFI protected. You would really need to get one of those tester I was using in this video so you could test it.
As far the landlord, humm really depends how nice they are. And how old is the building. GFI are not that old but old enough. So more less it depends on what was the code when they built it.
is it the same in sweden to you think? the major difference is that we only got one of those ground fuses. Ours is in the fusebox along with the other fuses. thats suppose to protect the entire appartment. But i dont know if its an solid way to do it :P
sorry to say I really don't know much when it comes to the setup over there. I do know it's all 220 volts. So just to be safe I wont say anymore to screw you up, ok ..LOL
