have this camera and love it, but Canons to quit fibbing about "Full HD". at 1080 iit's only 20 fps, which is pretty much useless for anything but very slow panning of a stationary scene, like a landscape. Come on Canon, get it together and give us a firmware update with 24 fps for 1080. Then this camera will be perfect. Oh, more manual control over video would be nice, too.

nice clip, but the 500D still has a SMALL sensor (1.6 crop) which really reduces quality! compared to the 5D MKII (also 3 " screen, DiGicIV processor, but full frame - so also L lenses!!! ultra crisp picture quality because of L lens and 35mm full frame sensor. and 1080 pix HDD filming, on top of that: weather sealed. Shows Pro vs amature qualities)

Any camera is as good as the glass in front of it!

No, the 500D records in a way called a "rolling shutter", which means that it gathers pixels going from the top of the sensor to the bottom each frame. So, the reason the poles would look slanted is because while the sensor already recorded the new position of the pole in the frame at the top of the frame, it has not yet recorded the position of the pole at the bottom of the frame.

I bought a 500D last Saturday and so far I'm loving it! I'm a complete newcomer to DSLRs though (I've always been a point and shoot kid) so I still have a lot to learn. Still, it's a great camera for sure! My only negative is that the build quality, whilst not 'bad', isn't spectacular (feels a bit too plasticy). Everything else would have to get an A* though :)

That's amazing that a new model of canon DSLR which is 500D an extended version of 450D...The high ISO shot mode allows those like th shot at low light and the expandable ISO was great and unbelieveble which can achieved to ISO 12800 and this time this model offered a great shot of HD video shooting at the same time take a shot at still image.

I really wish that Canon would cease with the 'full 1080p HD video' thing because it isn't...it's only 20fps at 1080 which isn't full HD.

Having said that, the 20fps still looks quite usable and 720p at 30fps is still used by most HDTV channels anyway so it's not like it's a lesser camera for not having 1080p. It's still the cheapest way to get professional looking HD video.

Nikon's D90 is twice the camera. This is just some cheap version trying to compete with Nikon. This camera is small and cheaply made. The build quality is way better on the D90.

If you need a stronger camera what you need is a 40D or a 50D... if you don't need a tough one, but you still want a camera with a very high image quality, this one is perfect, way beyond D90 (14bit vs 12bit, higher ISO sensitivity, higher definition...)

Um, the D90 can't really compare.... less pixels, lower level chip technology, and it doesn't have as many of the upgrades that the 500D has. One other point is that the 450D already outsells the D90, which tells you something right there.

I agree, the build quality on Nikon camera's is exceptional. At the same price point the Nikon feels so much better in the hand. Even the 5D feels like a cheap piece of kit compared to the D90.

But the 500D pretty much kills the D90 in almost every other aspect. Especially in the the video stakes. It is not even comparable, the D90's is awful and the 500D's is lovely.
