i think the mistake he made was bringing it into the goal crease, the crease has got to be a bit scratched up since the goalie was in there the entire period so when he brought it in or near the goalie crease it just caught a skate mark and it bounced over his stick.

there is a chip in the ice, but players know that. the ice is always choppy at the end of periods and players know its harder to control as opposed to when the beginning of the period. watch the vid closely and u will see him move in as if its guaranteed and even start to take his eyes off the puck as hes about to backhand it in. bad luck, but he shouldnt assume he is gonna score, even if the net is empty.
