I carry whatever is legal for the area I am in. In most of Europe, that means no knives and no kubotans. However, there are many items that are legal, such as a pocket flashlight, that is better than a kubotan. If you stay away from the wrong areas, you are more likely to incure a pickpocketing attempt than a mugging anyway.

PS I know you must travel a lot, doing seminars all over the world, but, if you don't mind me asking, do you carry a blade or kubotan with you for self defense? And if so, a fixed or folding blade? single or double edge? Thanks and keep up the awesome work!
