Katherine Bell's clutch buzz-in at 4:19 is world class. Trailing with 70 seconds to go, she correctly answers the question after, "This body has sat as a court only 12 times in 170..." She had another one in part 1 with her answer "Hemophilia." No wonder this show became legendary. Thanks for posting this.
In one of her books, Betty White (widow of original "College Bowl" emcee Allen Ludden) wrote that when Ludden left "College Bowl", the producers made successor Robert Earle (seen in this clip) wear glasses so he'd look like Ludden.
White wrote about someone meeting her and Ludden shortly after Earle took over and telling Ludden "Who is that new guy they poured into your glasses?".
I used to watch this show each Sunday, even though I wasn't even a teen, and I couldn't answer any of the questions. Even now, over 40 years later, I only answered five of the questions correctly. Thanks for the posting. It's a great memory.
The study of Western Civilization is considered passe now, that's why few students could answer these questions today, English Lit and History have given way to useless politically correct garbage.
actually, college quiz bowls still ask lit and history questions. what people are able to answer simply depends on what they know and how well they remember it.
Actually, as someone who participated in College Bowl, these questions are for the most part considerably easier than nowadays. These are closer to high school academic bowl difficulty.

B*tch slap 'em ladies. This is why I love the South and can't stand the smug, provincial, bastard Yankees who ar just so sure their poop doesn't stink. Worked with them all my life, never could stand that dog...THANK YOU SO MUCH for putting them in their place.
Congrats to the ladies (not girls!) from Agnes Scott, but Princeton got hosed in the first part ..... the answer explaining the speed of sound should have been as acceptable as the one given. Of course, Princeton should not have answered so quickly with the narrow lead and time running out.
@TeganX7 Elasticity isn't a very precise way to describe the difference in the speed of sound in materials, but saying "density" misses the point. I'd say the questions and scoring were 100% fair, though it kinda annoyed me when the host picked a beef with the pronunciation of Boadicea since that's an anglicization of a latinization of ancient isolated speech.
@SamuelRiv The ability to maintain higher density is the result of elasticity. I would at least prompt on density since it implies the correct answer in any normal theoretical situation. Also, I think it was excusable to check Boadicea since it is a long name and some syllables may not have been perfectly clear. Maybe the host was unsure. It certainly would not have been acceptable to take an incorrect name, however debatable the particular pronunciation may be.
220 to 215? What a close game that was. It was just too bad that this game was made out to the be "The Battle Of The Sexes". The fact that it was an All-Female team defeating an All-Male team, that made this historic, mentioned by Mwillf, is a very Sexist thing to say. In the world of the Quiz show, there is no Man, or Woman, everyone is equal, we all have good enough Brains to enter, and compete. And may the best person, or team, in this matter, win.
I played competitive college bowl in the late 90s and early 00s, and for the most part, the questions at tournaments weren't nearly as difficult as these were. There are quite a few people who are/were on the circuit who would do really well with this question pack, but I suspect most players (like me) would be reduced to quivering jelly by halftime.
They showed the last 10 seconds or so of this game during NBC's coverage of the 1984 National Championship semi-finals and finals. Besides NBC's general erasure of video tape (for example, pretty much all of the NBC "Wheel of Fortune" episodes are gone), color video tape from the 1960s usually didn't last very long.
Those questions were tough. Ironic that the next-to-last question involved Einstein and the Agnes Scott team answered it first. A page at the Agnes Scott College website discusses the show- very interesting comments.
I played on the Agnes Scott college bowl team in the late 1980s. This 1966 match was, as one might imagine, legendary amongst alumnae, faculty and students. It's great fun finally to see the show. Makes me proud to this day. Thanks for posting!
I believe that this was the first time that an all female team defeated an all male team. This, in all the years of this show, never occured before. I believe it happened after this. Too bad this show went off the air. This was an historic show in that regard.
Do you (or anybody) have any of the three weeks that followed this show? My late father coached the Marietta College team when they went up against Agnes Scott, and were on the show two more times. Please let me know if this is available; the clip you showed is a week before Marietta's appearance.
I'm really sorry. This is the only episode of this show that I have. It was transferred to the 3/4" U-Matic original that I acquired some time in the 1970's -- years after it's airing. Therefore, the masters must have existed at least about a decade after airing. I don't know the the locale of the storage of this 2" videoape master in the 70's. I wish that I could help you. Perhaps contact Marietta's historical archives, NBC archives, or General Electric (same company now).
I'd be amazed if any of the 2" masters survive. NBC went on a short-sighted vault purge in the 70s. There are very few NBC tapes left from the late 50s to late 60s. Even 60s-era Johnny Carson is gone, surviving only on lousy 16mm kinescopes. This is a really cool and rare tape you have! Thanks for posting.
those guys must have had to hide for a while on campus..

Questions then were validated by World Book Encyclopedia. Nowadays, when we write QuizBowl questions, we validate them through Wikipedia.

15 points is hardly a decisive victory. How sexist and racist your rant is.

Wonder if this partly inspired SCTV's "High Q" parodies with Eugene Levy as a particularly ill-tempered "Alex Trebel."

Look up "College Bowl" on the internet.
The descendants of the original show producer Don Reid have kinescopes and some videotapes of the original CBS and NBC tv programs.

You can consider Agnes Scott defeating Princeton the equal of Texas Western (UTEP) defeating Kentucky which also happened in 1966.

It was a squeaker, but it was fair and square. As an Agnes Scott alumnae, this makes me proud. The questions were tough for all!
