  • very good info, good job, but I would change this. forget the bag, dump the grains in and strain it out after steeping, then rince the grains with very hot water and add the strainings to the wort. Steeping should be done at 140 -150 for dryer beers, and 150-162 for sweeter beers. I do the middle at 150

  • Extract brewing is different. The mashing process is already done in the extract. The specialty grains add some to SG but are primiarly for color/flavor. That's what makes extract kits so easy (no mashing, sparging, lautering, etc.).

  • question : isnt the water supposed to be around 150 when you put the muslin bag? or can you put it when the water is still cold?

  • No, it should be added at 150 or, in metric 65 degress C. Definitely not right to add at cold, and bring temp up. It should be steeped for about 30 minutes at this temp
