The Attoub case - comparisons with Schalk Burger aren't necessary, you don't need to convinve me that guy needed a heavier sentence. Unfortunately, it was the outcry following his lenient treatment that meant that the IRB were going to come down hard on the next case, regardless of who it was, to prove a point.
In my view, it would have been better to review old cases like Burger's and change the sentence. But, I think they lack the backbone to upset the SRFU, so when it happened in HC...

You can't question the evidence in the Attoub case though, there's a photo, and clear as day, he's got his finger knuckle deep in Ferris's eye, add to that Ferris's testimony (a pretty honest player, who said that the Dupuy contact was light, and not that bad), add to that Attoub's failure to admit his wrongdoing, and the fact the IRB wanted to stamp gouging out, it was always going to be a heavy sentence.

David Attoub's gouging is a horrible thing which must be removed from the game. In his hearing, he said he didn't do it, and someone made up the photos, which wasn't right. His ban was harsh, but correct.

If Flannery said he was guilty, and that he is sorry, why did he appeal ( while his punishment was low, 5 weeks ) and why the punishment became only 4 weeks after appeal. I don't know where you get your information, but his appeal was not succesful, his ban wasn't reduced and he will miss the rest of the 6N's. I haven't seen a case for years where a player has not appealed, although I admit, I was disappointed he didn't just accept his sentence.
