Ken Norton is definitely a great fighter that Ali never matched well against even though he won the last two fights. This was not a convincing victory.
Much different from the Ali-Norton I. Norton didn't deal with a constantly-moving Ali very well: he couldn't assert much control, and scored very little. Ali didn't dominate: he did enough to win most rounds, but he had a big round in the 6th. Still the judges' close split decision was a disgrace. I score 8-1-3 Ali, with Ali winning 2-6,9,10 and 11, Norton 7, and 1,8 and 11 were even. Cosell called it well except his prediction at the end that Ali would no longer be a great fighter again
@musiclover59 A good breakdown by you. Plus I agree with you on the judges making this much closer than I thought too. Norton didn't do enouugh to win 6 rounds. But I did give him more than you. I gave Norton 3 rounds (7,8,9). Ali 9 rounds (like you I see Ali winning 1,2,3,4,5 & the big 6th) then winning the last 3 (10, 11 & 12).

@JDavid1203792 no his name is whatever he legally wants it to be, he LEGALLY changed it to muhammad ali, just because you have some weird personal problem with based on some resentment, fear, bigotry or what have you of the "other" that's your problem not his, his legal name is muhammad ali.

That response doesn't address my question. He chose an Arabic name (as all Black Muslims) which flies in the face of what they supposedly stand for given the historical relationship between Blacks and Muslims. Now, your free country argument is simplistic, since a black person can choose to burn a cross in his yard, and wear the Confederate flag around his waist. My point was that it's rather strange. Nuff said...
@Nonpeon hmm...not strange at all, I dont know what you're getting at. He joined a particular sect of a mainstream religion that is viewed as outside the boundaries of the orthodox religion. He then changed his name to Muhammad Ali. By your logic every black person in this country should change their name to an African one. After all probably 95% of the last names were once the names of the master of their anscestors, it was imposed on them. At least ali made a choice to call himself Ali
@Ruffneckization (con't) also your sweeping generalization is incorrect right off the bat...X is an Arabic name? Since when? Malcolm X didn't give himself an Arabic name, neither is Shabazz a popular African name among black muslims, i think you're trying to be clever...but its not really working...let the man name himself whatever he wants.
You don't get it. SAD... Let me say it again. Arabs enslaved blacks even BEFORE Europeans, and have continued, until recently in Mauritania, to do so. Hence, it rather hypocritical of the so-called Black Muslims to have done that. Should I explain this again in Ebonics? LOL!

B) Unless one's stupid, then educated people know all about the naming of slaves after their masters, but your pointing this out was irrelevant to my point. Namely, again for the mentally challenged: Arabs were involved in the slave trade, so it's rather odd that black use Arabic names.
@Nonpeon (cont) but NOWHERE near the level of white europeans, who no only brought millions over but once our country founded on "freedom and justice for all" came into existence millions were not only enslaved but women raped daily by the overseers or masters, sometimes for breeding sometimes to keep the bed warm children were sold off, slaves could be killed at drop of a hat & you have gall to raise a stink about a guy changing his name to ali? This discussion has NOTHING to do with my point, so it's completely irrelevant. Get a clue about what the discussion is about, and stop trying to put a label on someone you know nothing about. I'm not going to identify myself, cause you'd look like a complete ASS. I'll save you THAT dignity. LOL!!
@Nonpeon 30-40% of the black slaves that were brought to america during the slavery era were actually Muslim. They were forcefully converted to christianity, their names were robbed, and their identity was taken. For example, Kareem abdul jabbar's ancestors are Nigerians, of the Muslim Yoruba tribe. He basically converted back to his original ancestor's religion. Alcondor was the name of his slave master.
Let me cut this short. Islam was FORCED on the Africans less than 2,000 years ago. It's NOT an indigenous African Religion. Secondly, it copied many of the aspects of the religion being practiced in Ancient Egypt (as did its predecessor - Christianity), right down to how one kneels during prayer. So please!!
@Nonpeon islam never copied any of those previous abrahamic religion before,so please..don't go way ahead from that kind of nonsense point of view,learn it before you judge it.
LOL! Islam certainly copied pre-Christian Egyptian religion, right down to the prayers and the body positioning (which are engraved in STONE in Egypt, so they can't be denied). This has NOTHING to do with Christianity, which is nothing but a religion rife with plagiarism also. You should learn about THAT before you speak. As soon as Europeans (2000 years ago) and Arabs (700AD) got to Egypt, it's rather strange that they both got the religion bug. LOL!! Just Plagiarists!!!!
@Nonpeon you know all of your word are fucking bullshit,the way they pray is how their prophet muhammad pray to god,and from that situation his follower do the same,muhammad never been to Egypt before the praying thing,and atleast their god i not fabricated such as the christians one,and if you think their religion is base on plagiarism,then why science,math,mediceine,astronomy ect.when no know about it at that time being reveal long time ago only now we know it
Well, this is easy to clear up. A) The Egyptians believed in One god Monotheism (10,000 years before Muhammed). B) They had a holy Trinity. C) they believed people died and were sent to judgement before going to heaven D) their prayer positioning is evident on the walls in Egypt. I haven't seen them directly, but I've seen pictures on Youtube, that's how I found out. I've got facts, you've got conjecture. There is NO religion that is true! They are loosely based on older religions.
@Nonpeon that's totally wrong,the Egyptians worship many god at that time,but only one pharaoh and his wife whoship only 1 god and that the sun just like the shinto,the mayan which date way back before the Egyptians,and if i'm not mistaken nefatari and her husband,all the pharaoh worship many god and some claim their god like Ramses II,if i'm wrong than why there's a info of Amun-ra,Iah,Horus,Anubis,Geb etc.which date back way than 10,000 years ago,there is a true religion and that is Islam
LOL!! An amateurish understanding. The Egyptians worshiped one god from the beginning, but used different idols to represent the different ASPECTS of the one god. Example: A car is made up of many parts, but all of them together make one car. Same principle. This has been claimed by those who don't want to make AFrica the center of knowledge, which it seems has affected your thinking.
@Nonpeon you call me an amature,but you prove to me that non of the abrahamic religion is plagiarized,tell me in what aspect that it was plagiarized,you say they've copied it from the ancient Egyptian religion,but where is the prove,in abrahamic religion,africa is not the center of knowlegde or even the cradle of civilization,it's in the middle east,what is your prove?you call me an amature but you yourself seized tostop learning and to uderstand,so who is the amature here
Well, let's start with the story of christ, which comes from their astrological calendar and winter solstice ceremony. The egyptians HAD a holy trinity (Osiris, Isis and Horus), and HOrus was immaculately concepted. Horus was called the light of the world. Horus had a brother Set, whom killed him (Cain and Abel) because of his jealousy for his father's devotion shown towards Horus. They had the negative confessions, where the 10 commandments came from. Should I continue?? LOL!!
@Nonpeon Yes, you should continue because that is all speculation. You need to read from more than a few authors. Read a variety of views then form your own opinion.
@Nonpeon things like hydrology cycle,how human evolve in the mothers worm,human fingerprint,the cats eye nebula,and lots more,dude,i'm an architect and i learn a lot when traveling around the world,plus i do learn about these abrahamic religion and by far islam is no.1 makes sense and judaism goes second,and christianity kind of nonsense,3 in 1 god,if your god is so powerful,so why did he die,imagine a god die?,if he is god why he has father and mother,don't you think it's fabricated dude?
You're ranking system is irrelevant to whether Islam was plagiarized. I didn't say fabricated, I said plagiarized. You obviously haven't studied ancient Egyptian religion, for if you had, you'd know how ridiculous the big 3 religions are: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Nuff said...
@Nonpeon plagiarized or not,i do study the Egyptian culture it's part of the course of subject in my course to become an architect,plus if you don't understand Islam,feel free to ask me about it,and i don't think that original abrahamic religion is ridiculous,if it wasn't because of irresponsible human who trying to alter and fabricated it,the religion itself is beautiful and full of truth,but now only one religion that is practical to embrace and follow and is Islam.
This whole discussion doesn't address the similarities of Islam to much more ancient Egyptian religion, and I'm not really interested in studying a watered-down version of Egyptian religion. I don't mean to insult you, but if you were truly aware of how your religion has used the exact principles of the Egyptian religion, you most certainly wouldn't believe in Islam. You'd know better. I'm sure it makes you feel good, but it's just not a "God-given" thing as is claimed.
@Nonpeon what make you think that islam or other abrahamic religion is watered down version of Egyptians?what is the prove,then what about Noah, Enoch, Lott, Methuselah, Jared etc.these people leave way before the egytians religion and culture exist in middle east,and worship only 1 god,prove to me then that egyptians religion is plagiarist,and i do have the prove that abrahamic religion is not a copied of other religion
They were not REAL people. Surely you don't believe the whole world flooded and a man took all the animals two-by-two on the ark? LOL! THis story also was copied from the Eygptian story of the flooding of the world. There's NO evidence that these people existed. Just fables. Sorry to break the news to you. Moses is fake too. In fact, the story is loosely based on an Egyptian pharaoh, and the Israelites never worked as slaves there either. There's bullshit on many levels.
@Nonpeon and by the way,the way the Egyptian worship or pray you've mention is actually crafted or in scripted on the wall and paper is actually to tell stories and as a literal prove,it is the nature of Egyptian hieroglyphs that shows human look like they were praying,because it was the symbols of the language which indicate different meaning just like ABC,i will send you a video of what is islam and the context is and the different about it from other religion,if i have the time...
What are you talking about? I quite understand the difference between hieroglyphs and PICTURES of those praying to MAAT. LOL!! I can't believe you would even say this. You can send me what you want, but it doesn't change the facts. Thanks...
@Nonpeon i'm talking about the prove that exist today that i know about the religion aspect of the ancient Egyptians,but if there any info that i missed or unheard of, please do tell,the more i learned the more i gained.and what i've trying to say is all the things that had been shown in the inscription or the craving on the stone or wall is just to tell the story of what happen in their daily life,and tragedy in their country like the plague happen during Ramses II era
@QawiBraxton81 Ali's flaws were what made him great. Without his flaws, he would have just been Superman, unstoppable, unhittable, uninteresting. But in any Ali fight there is this tension because there's always the chance that Ali will make a false step and get hit with that left hook over the top. Even against Quarry or Patterson or any of the guys that he handled easily, there's always excitement.
In the first fight Ali's jaw wasn't broken in Round 2 but it was badly damaged and it was broken in the Last Round, but to go 10 rounds with a Jaw badly damaged is still something. It showed that Ali had an iron chin.
Man - these were the days - a heavyweight championship fight between two all time greats on ABC - now you have to pay $50 to see two total scrubs fight
why didnt people ever counter Alis jab?thats the best way to take away a jab,with a quick right counter Mayweather style,nobody ever thought to do it to Ali???
Lol, that's like asking why no one could stop Jordan's fadeaway. You can only run the pull counter on a fighter with an average to poor jab. You cannot run a pull counter on Ali's jab, and if a fighter were to try, he would just fake the jab and then follow with a right lead.
@yaiqab Nah man,look at this jab he's throwing at Norton here?its soft man,it could be pull countered VERY easily!all Norton had to do was stand still and time it.Oscar Dela hoya had one of the best jabs in boxing,Floyd completely took it away from him when the met.Any jab can be pull countered!You just have to be quick and decisive!Nobody ever countered Ali's jab!very surprising!all these fighters?none?LOL.You have to find a way to stop whatever your opponents main weapon is man!
You can't compare Kenny Norton to Floyd Mayweather. De La Hoya took away his own jab because even though it was being countered by Floyd, it was also effective at times.
@yaiqab DLH didnt take away his own jab,why would he?It was taken away from him by effective countering.The right counter coming back at you is so much harder,that its not worth throwing that jab anymore.Thats all Norton had to do.Its a clever skill,just learn it and do it.This Ali here,just cut the ring off and counter his jab.Ali's opponents just showed him too much fucking respect man!!they were all too impressed by his fame etc!like they felt "lucky" just to be in the same ring as him!
You think Ali would just keep throwing the same jab over and over if it was getting countered? He was not one-dimensional. Again, Norton was not a fighter who fought using timing. He really wasn't even much of a boxer. He was a great natural athlete who learned how to fight late in life. The timing that Mayweather has was honed from training since he was 3 years old. You can't compare the two, because if it was that easy, everyone would do it on an elite level.
@yaiqab but NOBODY ever countered Ali's jab or even tried ever!!none of em!!and that was his main weapon,Ali wasnt a fighter who really mixed it up,he never even went to the body,he was all jab jab jab.If someone had timed and counterd it and took it away from him,he woulda been really stuck!im very surprised that all these fighters and trainers,none ever did!
@yaiqab There was one Dutch guy Ali fought called Rudi Lubbers,and all Ali did was jab,i mean he didnt even throw the right in that fight,just jab jab jab!now imagine if that guy coulda timed and countered it?what would Ali have done then?see what i mean?fighters at that time were too hypnotized by him,all that i am the greatest bullshit!!
@onlyjoetee I saw that fight with Lubbers, and the reason why Ali threw all lefts is because his right hand was injured, just like how Floyd threw all lefts against Carlos Hernandez and Baldomir. You need to watch more Ali fights, because Ali was not one dimensional. Technically, he was not as good as Floyd, but the things that he did were hard to stop. Floyd said in the build up to the Mosley fight that from the outside looking in, it looks easy to beat him. The same with Ali.
@yaiqab Floyd hit Boldomir with right all night man!i know he fought Genaro hernandez,but who is carlos hernandez?Ali was actually very limited as a fighter,especially when you look at him nowadays!,and that jab could have definitely been countered.He was also very vulnerable to the left hook.im surprised guys didnt counter that jab,or whip in the quick left hook upstairs Roy jones style.they all just stood there admiring him!!
Good observation. Opponents tried to counter but Ali used his height, reach, and speed advantage with his superior timing and fantastic reflexes - few had a real chance of successful counters; but Norton had Ali's number as well as anyone. He followed Eddie Futch direction well.
On top of all that bruh, you have to understand that Ali did not telegraph his jab. The only other man that I can think of with a similar jab was Hearns. Ali also jabbed on the move. How can you pull counter someone when they're jabbing while both their feet are in the air lol? Ali had phenomenal coordination.
@yaiqab a jab is a jab.When you pull counter,you stand still and time the other guy,you dont follow him around,doesnt matter weather he's in the air or not!!
@sweetfights ---Norton should have gotten decision in 3d fight, but Ali had a way of influencing the judges, in addition to getting a lot of leeway for holding from the refs. Still the greatest though
@sweetfights it should be a good fight,the springing left hook and the straight right will be perfect against southpaw Pacquiao!That Pacquiao left hand which hit Cotto & margarito constantly wont find Floyd so easy.Pacquiao is another one,why dont opponents ever hit him with the straight right!its perfect for a southpaw!
@onlyjoetee Great question; I think part of the reason is that it's very hard to work a counter jab while going forward unless you are quick enough to slip the jab and then not get hit with a right hand off of that jab. Counter jabs are great if you don't get hit first, but then any counter tactic works well if you make the guy miss. Norton is able to upset Ali's timing rhythm by alternating head and foot movement, and that sets up his counter game as Ali starts to miss and get tentative.
@RaulGroom Eddie futch noticed than none of Ali's opponents ever jabbed him back.He simply told Norton,when Ali jabs you,jab him right back,Ali didnt like it at all...
@onlyjoetee I don't doubt that Futch said that and there's some truth to it, certainly, but plenty of fighters TRIED a counter game against Ali. Most were unsuccessful. Juergen Blin, for example, caught Ali with some good counters early in the fight and looked to be making a credible stab at taking the world title. In the end he was undone by the same problem almost all Ali opponents had - he just got hit too much.
@onlyjoetee Right, that's the point, it takes a special fighter to counter someone with exceptional handspeed and accuracy. Most fighters, even most championship level fighters, can't credibly do it. Norton's approach was very sound and very disciplined thanks to Futch's great skill and Ken's determination, along with his strange crab style that was awkward for Ali's punching angles. Couldn't have worked for, say, Foreman, who didn't have the patience for it.
@RaulGroom its not that hard to counter.but you have to stand still and time it,cant go following him around.most of Ali's opponents didnt come with the right game plan
@onlyjoetee Who? Who are you talking about that could have done better with a counterpunching plan? Frazier, a pressure fighter (who did pretty well with the style he had?) Foreman, who had no patience? Lyle, who in fact did do the things you describe, and was probably winning the fight when he got knocked out? I don't doubt there's SOMEBODY who should have fought Ali this way, but it'd be helpful if you'd name him. Who could have done it?
@onlyjoetee Oviously there's something to what you are saying about countering Ali cuz I saw the defensive fighter Jimmy Young counterpunch Ali all night, but he did it mostly with a straight right POP! everytime he timed Ali's jab, POP! Ali was frustrated and sorry as hell that night. Plus Jimmy never followed Ali, he forced Ali to follow him and when Ali stepped forward leading with the jab, Jimmy countered backing up Pop! Only time I remember Ali getting countered so well.
Ken Norton is definitely a great fighter that Ali never matched well against even though he won the last two fights. This was not a convincing victory.

I haven't seen them directly, but I've seen pictures on Youtube, that's how I found out. I've got facts, you've got conjecture. There is NO religion that is true! They are loosely based on older religions.
Nonpeon 1 month ago
@Nonpeon that's totally wrong,the Egyptians worship many god at that time,but only one pharaoh and his wife whoship only 1 god and that the sun just like the shinto,the mayan which date way back before the Egyptians,and if i'm not mistaken nefatari and her husband,all the pharaoh worship many god and some claim their god like Ramses II,if i'm wrong than why there's a info of Amun-ra,Iah,Horus,Anubis,Geb etc.which date back way than 10,000 years ago,there is a true religion and that is Islam
sengalkol 1 month ago
@sengalkol

@Nonpeon you call me an amature,but you prove to me that non of the abrahamic religion is plagiarized,tell me in what aspect that it was plagiarized,you say they've copied it from the ancient Egyptian religion,but where is the prove,in abrahamic religion,africa is not the center of knowlegde or even the cradle of civilization,it's in the middle east,what is your prove?you call me an amature but you yourself seized tostop learning and to uderstand,so who is the amature here
sengalkol 1 month ago
@sengalkol
LOL!!

@Nonpeon TELL IT LIKE IT IS!!!! IRONICALLY SPEAKING: "YE SHALL KNOW THE TRUTH AND THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE." FREE FROM RELIGION, THAT IS. LOL!!!
salahudeenabduladl 1 month ago
@Nonpeon Yes, you should continue because that is all speculation. You need to read from more than a few authors. Read a variety of views then form your own opinion.

@Nonpeon things like hydrology cycle,how human evolve in the mothers worm,human fingerprint,the cats eye nebula,and lots more,dude,i'm an architect and i learn a lot when traveling around the world,plus i do learn about these abrahamic religion and by far islam is no.1 makes sense and judaism goes second,and christianity kind of nonsense,3 in 1 god,if your god is so powerful,so why did he die,imagine a god die?,if he is god why he has father and mother,don't you think it's fabricated dude?
sengalkol 1 month ago
@sengalkol
Nonpeon 1 month ago
@Nonpeon plagiarized or not,i do study the Egyptian culture it's part of the course of subject in my course to become an architect,plus if you don't understand Islam,feel free to ask me about it,and i don't think that original abrahamic religion is ridiculous,if it wasn't because of irresponsible human who trying to alter and fabricated it,the religion itself is beautiful and full of truth,but now only one religion that is practical to embrace and follow and is Islam.
sengalkol 1 month ago
@sengalkol
Nonpeon 1 month ago
@Nonpeon what make you think that islam or other abrahamic religion is watered down version of Egyptians?what is the prove,then what about Noah, Enoch, Lott, Methuselah, Jared etc.these people leave way before the egytians religion and culture exist in middle east,and worship only 1 god,prove to me then that egyptians religion is plagiarist,and i do have the prove that abrahamic religion is not a copied of other religion
sengalkol 1 month ago
@sengalkol
Nonpeon 1 month ago
@Nonpeon and by the way,the way the Egyptian worship or pray you've mention is actually crafted or in scripted on the wall and paper is actually to tell stories and as a literal prove,it is the nature of Egyptian hieroglyphs that shows human look like they were praying,because it was the symbols of the language which indicate different meaning just like ABC,i will send you a video of what is islam and the context is and the different about it from other religion,if i have the time...
sengalkol 1 month ago
@sengalkol
What are you talking about? I quite understand the difference between hieroglyphs and PICTURES of those praying to MAAT. LOL!! I can't believe you would even say this. You can send me what you want, but it doesn't change the facts. Thanks...
Nonpeon 1 month ago
@Nonpeon i'm talking about the prove that exist today that i know about the religion aspect of the ancient Egyptians,but if there any info that i missed or unheard of, please do tell,the more i learned the more i gained.and what i've trying to say is all the things that had been shown in the inscription or the craving on the stone or wall is just to tell the story of what happen in their daily life,and tragedy in their country like the plague happen during Ramses II era

my favorite ALI fight
kuriaki71 5 months ago

It showed that Ali had an iron chin.
truebeliever786 7 months ago
@truebeliever786
Naw, Norton broke it in round 2. The proof is that even Cosell noticed the attention that Ali and Dundee were paying to it between rounds.

why didnt people ever counter Alis jab?thats the best way to take away a jab,with a quick right counter Mayweather style,nobody ever thought to do it to Ali???
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee
Lol, that's like asking why no one could stop Jordan's fadeaway. You can only run the pull counter on a fighter with an average to poor jab. You cannot run a pull counter on Ali's jab, and if a fighter were to try, he would just fake the jab and then follow with a right lead.
yaiqab 7 months ago
@yaiqab Nah man,look at this jab he's throwing at Norton here?its soft man,it could be pull countered VERY easily!all Norton had to do was stand still and time it.Oscar Dela hoya had one of the best jabs in boxing,Floyd completely took it away from him when the met.Any jab can be pull countered!You just have to be quick and decisive!Nobody ever countered Ali's jab!very surprising!all these fighters?none?LOL.You have to find a way to stop whatever your opponents main weapon is man!
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee
You can't compare Kenny Norton to Floyd Mayweather. De La Hoya took away his own jab because even though it was being countered by Floyd, it was also effective at times.
yaiqab 7 months ago
@yaiqab DLH didnt take away his own jab,why would he?It was taken away from him by effective countering.The right counter coming back at you is so much harder,that its not worth throwing that jab anymore.Thats all Norton had to do.Its a clever skill,just learn it and do it.This Ali here,just cut the ring off and counter his jab.Ali's opponents just showed him too much fucking respect man!!they were all too impressed by his fame etc!like they felt "lucky" just to be in the same ring as him!
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee
You can't compare the two, because if it was that easy, everyone would do it on an elite level.
yaiqab 7 months ago
@yaiqab but NOBODY ever countered Ali's jab or even tried ever!!none of em!!and that was his main weapon,Ali wasnt a fighter who really mixed it up,he never even went to the body,he was all jab jab jab.If someone had timed and counterd it and took it away from him,he woulda been really stuck!im very surprised that all these fighters and trainers,none ever did!
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@yaiqab the jab he's throwing in this fight against Norton cound definitely be countered!definitely!!i was so frustrated it wasnt being checked!!LOL
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@yaiqab There was one Dutch guy Ali fought called Rudi Lubbers,and all Ali did was jab,i mean he didnt even throw the right in that fight,just jab jab jab!now imagine if that guy coulda timed and countered it?what would Ali have done then?see what i mean?fighters at that time were too hypnotized by him,all that i am the greatest bullshit!!
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee It's hard to counter a jab against someone who's 3 times faster than you
prtynacan 7 months ago
@prtynacan its just timing man,you time it,kinda like music..the Ali jab looks so lazy in this fight,Norton coulda definitely countered it!!
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee I saw that fight with Lubbers, and the reason why Ali threw all lefts is because his right hand was injured, just like how Floyd threw all lefts against Carlos Hernandez and Baldomir. You need to watch more Ali fights, because Ali was not one dimensional. Technically, he was not as good as Floyd, but the things that he did were hard to stop. Floyd said in the build up to the Mosley fight that from the outside looking in, it looks easy to beat him. The same with Ali.
yaiqab 7 months ago
@yaiqab Floyd hit Boldomir with right all night man!i know he fought Genaro hernandez,but who is carlos hernandez?Ali was actually very limited as a fighter,especially when you look at him nowadays!,and that jab could have definitely been countered.He was also very vulnerable to the left hook.im surprised guys didnt counter that jab,or whip in the quick left hook upstairs Roy jones style.they all just stood there admiring him!!
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee
Good observation. Opponents tried to counter but Ali used his height, reach, and speed advantage with his superior timing and fantastic reflexes - few had a real chance of successful counters; but Norton had Ali's number as well as anyone. He followed Eddie Futch direction well.
sweetfights 7 months ago
@sweetfights which opponent tried to counter Ali?i've watched all his fights and never seen anyone trying to counter his jab!
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee
On top of all that bruh, you have to understand that Ali did not telegraph his jab. The only other man that I can think of with a similar jab was Hearns. Ali also jabbed on the move. How can you pull counter someone when they're jabbing while both their feet are in the air lol? Ali had phenomenal coordination.
yaiqab 7 months ago
@yaiqab a jab is a jab.When you pull counter,you stand still and time the other guy,you dont follow him around,doesnt matter weather he's in the air or not!!
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@sweetfights ---Norton should have gotten decision in 3d fight, but Ali had a way of influencing the judges, in addition to getting a lot of leeway for holding from the refs. Still the greatest though
loyaldude10 7 months ago
@loyaldude10
so true
sweetfights 4 months ago
Mayweather has yet to find an opponent who can match his reflexes and speed. He will be in for a challenge against Manny.
sweetfights 7 months ago
@sweetfights it should be a good fight,the springing left hook and the straight right will be perfect against southpaw Pacquiao!That Pacquiao left hand which hit Cotto & margarito constantly wont find Floyd so easy.Pacquiao is another one,why dont opponents ever hit him with the straight right!its perfect for a southpaw!
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee Great question; I think part of the reason is that it's very hard to work a counter jab while going forward unless you are quick enough to slip the jab and then not get hit with a right hand off of that jab. Counter jabs are great if you don't get hit first, but then any counter tactic works well if you make the guy miss. Norton is able to upset Ali's timing rhythm by alternating head and foot movement, and that sets up his counter game as Ali starts to miss and get tentative.
RaulGroom 7 months ago
@RaulGroom Eddie futch noticed than none of Ali's opponents ever jabbed him back.He simply told Norton,when Ali jabs you,jab him right back,Ali didnt like it at all...
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee I don't doubt that Futch said that and there's some truth to it, certainly, but plenty of fighters TRIED a counter game against Ali. Most were unsuccessful. Juergen Blin, for example, caught Ali with some good counters early in the fight and looked to be making a credible stab at taking the world title. In the end he was undone by the same problem almost all Ali opponents had - he just got hit too much.
RaulGroom 7 months ago
@RaulGroom YES Futch did say that.Blin was a bum..
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee Right, that's the point, it takes a special fighter to counter someone with exceptional handspeed and accuracy. Most fighters, even most championship level fighters, can't credibly do it. Norton's approach was very sound and very disciplined thanks to Futch's great skill and Ken's determination, along with his strange crab style that was awkward for Ali's punching angles. Couldn't have worked for, say, Foreman, who didn't have the patience for it.
RaulGroom 7 months ago
@RaulGroom its not that hard to counter.but you have to stand still and time it,cant go following him around.most of Ali's opponents didnt come with the right game plan
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee Who? Who are you talking about that could have done better with a counterpunching plan? Frazier, a pressure fighter (who did pretty well with the style he had?) Foreman, who had no patience? Lyle, who in fact did do the things you describe, and was probably winning the fight when he got knocked out? I don't doubt there's SOMEBODY who should have fought Ali this way, but it'd be helpful if you'd name him. Who could have done it?
RaulGroom 7 months ago
@RaulGroom Ali's had his day man,im tired of talking about him...
onlyjoetee 7 months ago
@onlyjoetee Oviously there's something to what you are saying about countering Ali cuz I saw the defensive fighter Jimmy Young counterpunch Ali all night, but he did it mostly with a straight right POP! everytime he timed Ali's jab, POP! Ali was frustrated and sorry as hell that night. Plus Jimmy never followed Ali, he forced Ali to follow him and when Ali stepped forward leading with the jab, Jimmy countered backing up Pop! Only time I remember Ali getting countered so well.
