I've also trained with Ron and this video was a very very long time ago. Ron has never stopped training, metal plate in knee, the whole deal. Ron is a very dangerous guy. His Ju Jitsu is great and his stand up has improved even as he gets older. Don't make judgement calls off this video because Ron could kill you, literally.

Don't jump to conclusions because someone lost one fight to a martial arts legend. Losing happens for many reasons and not just because of a lack of skill or ability.

heres the deal....Rons stuff would absolutely work in an ideal fighting situation. Any plan is better than no plan but it so happens that his plan is not the best plan. He looked scared standing....id hate to see him on the ground trying to fight. The ideal fighting situation does not come unless you know jiu jitsu/boxing etc and the other guy knows absolutely nothing. If you have to learn one form...learn jiu jitsu. What the fastest way to beat a boxer...get past his hands. end of story
Even a rookie could defeat you in a fight and it would be the most embarassing experience for a martial artist because you always thought that your martial arts is the best.
I've noticed that most martial artists skip their basics and I use to be one of them. Kali, Kuntao, Kung Fu, Wing Chun or whatever is already a very complicated form and the highest form of martial arts. If you don't know the basics of boxing, kicking or grapplling, there is no sense of studying the most complicated form, It's like studying Algebra without knowing the basics of Math.
@pat88ification I'm into MMA and I did a lot of things before this, I started from Kali stick fighting, jiujitsu, muay thai and the most powerful tool that i've learned is boxing. I can't say boxing is the best but knowing how to use your hands effectively gives you a lot of confidence in my opinion.

Ron has amazing skills actually. I used to train with him when his gym was a tiny upstairs affair with around a dozen total students. True Mixed Martial arts for self defense. Very good at teaching effective punching, kicking and grappling to novices and experts alike. Would put his best student in protective gear and go full speed with kali sticks for live full contact demonstrations. Not surprised his gym is so huge now.
@WEKAFwillie He has explained in interviews that he went into this fight with a badly damaged knee (he was in denial about it, as fighters often are about their career-ending injuries). Shortly afer this fight, he had a metal plate inserted into this knee.

If you can use a openhand strike in this match,then why not a palm heel strike instead of a useless slap? Bas Rutten was know for that and it is very effective.Chuck has good hands so that might have made his handstrikes more effective. This is in traditional MA among other moves.

do you not know what kick boxing is you tard? kick boxing is western boxing crossed with karate basically a full contact version of karate. or the term kick boxing can be used to describe muay thai, sanda, karate, taekwondo fighters in mixed style competitions. i am an ITF Taekwondo fighter and i compete in free style competitions called kick boxing competitions. kick boxing is actually quite a broad term. plus you will still learn the trow hooks and uppercuts in traditional arts ......
like kyokushin and WTF taekwondo even if punching to the head isnt allowed. you still learn western boxing techniques so you can effectivly use them in sparring or for self defense. there would be no MMA if there werent traditional arts first.

Umm, yeah but they don't think to traditional Martial Arts. Lyoto Machida trained at Black Horse Gym with Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort. He doesn't just do Karate. Neither did Andy Hug. Yes he did Karate, but if you see in K1 he uses Boxing which in Kyokushin theres no punching to the head. Bas Rutten is really a Kickboxer his Black Belts in Tae Kwon Do and Kyokushin Karate he acheved at a young age. After competeing in Muay Thai and Pancrase, his MMA fights have no link to those styles.

And both men couldn't punch, they couldn't even do straight palm strikes to the face. Seems to me they pretty much took any hand skill out of the fight.
