I have to comment, I never comment on any uploads, but on this occasion I do, James Hetfield wanted this version on the Black album but buckled under the possible backlash from fans saying they were sell outs, a monicker they've had since they released "Kill 'Em All" in 83. At the end of the day it's either a wedding song, a ffuneral song, or a whatever a hell you want to call it song, it's an amazing song in both formats done by very very talented musicians.

Watch the VH1 Classic Albums special about the black album, particular the part about this song. You'll find out that the orchestra in this is the original score that Micheal Kamen wrote for the band... but recorded like this so you can actually hear it! They thought it was way too cheesy when they listened to it with the album mix, which is why you can hardly hear it in the final version.

Maybe the song would have gained a lot mixing the voice more softly. A lil' bit too much punchy and bright, comparing to the slow and low tune of the orchestra and 12-string.

Anyhow, every time I thought listening to that elevator version, I forgot a few moments later 'cause I was busy at something else, but now, this is the first time I listen to it, and whoa. I must say that it really blew my mind away.

@veshijr101 this has nothing to do with the S&M version, the strrng parts you hear on this track are the same as in the original NEM version, only mixed in a lot louder. S&M was in 1999, this was made in 1992.

@sasdsasd2 Sigh.... What I meant was that the S&M show could have been set up in this vein.... It ended up being a regular Metallica show with a little bit of orchestra that Lar's drums kept killing. If the show could have been a more serious attempt at incorporating symphonic element with Metallica's music (something like this version of NEM), it would have been so much more special.

through the years i learned one thing. Never second guess Metallica. If Metallica would of thought S&M could be better then it would have been better. S&M is uplifting, Michael Kamen and Metallica did a fabulous job with it.

There are 2 versions of this CD, it must say and more on the bottom. Includes demos for several songs from the Black Album and One, and it also has this song on there. It may not be the S&M version of the song, but it was recorded with the same symphony (I'm sure not all the same members of the symphony as it was done over 10 years later)
