Wanted to know, which way to go? Louisiana? New York City? They wanted the answer. They'd ask of me, "Friend, have you seen Glory Road? Say friend, I got a heavy load and I know Glory Road's waiting for me.". Rest my load now, one more...Glory Road...won't set me free. Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da. Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da. Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da (fade out).
Caught me a pickup down from Seattle through to L.A.. Seems like those folks go chasin' a new star every day. Ain't gonna stay Nevada, through Wyoming, Colorado, I'm on my way! Friend, have you seen Glory Road? Say friend, I got a heavy load and I know Glory Road's waiting for me. Da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da...Met so many others...da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da, da.
Wearin' my high boots, got all my worldlies here in a sack. Lookin' for somethin', knowin' that it ain't here where I'm at, ain't lookin' back, I'm comin'...Ride by thumbin'...Get by bummin', I'm on my way! Friend, have you seen Glory Road? Say friend, I got a heavy load and I know Glory Road's waiting for me. Da, da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da. Da, da, da, da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da,da.
Like "Brooklyn Roads" on Neil's previous LP "VG&S", another autobiographical account told in "Glory Road". Neil stated in interviews that he did in fact live in Wyoming growing up, as he spent his youth moving around parts of the U.S.. The lyrics remind me of the scene in "The Jazz Singer" where he becomes somewhat of a vagrant after storming out of a music session in a huff, taking odd jobs while down on his luck & penniless right before Jess's "second coming" as a performer.
In my opinion, Neil's version, this version, is far superior to any I've heard. His voice flows through it in pure emotion. Smooth and easy. He compliments the words with his wonderful voice and near perfect melody.
Neil Diamond wrote the song and his own interpretation of his own song is far better as it is sung as it was intended, I made a similar comment regarding red red wine against UB40's version, how can a cover be better than the original, I know its all about opinions but it is just ludicrous to suggest that
@morningsideish its a wonderful song and arrangement ,,, Scott used exactly the same arrangement.... no deviation from the phrasing that I hear,, its just that Scott's voice is superior to Neil Diamonds my opinion anyway.
It is one of my favorite songs, but as an second-language speaker i don`t get the lyrics. What does he mean with the "glory road"? Why does he go on to this journey?
I forgotton how much I loved this song when I was younger. I think I sold the album but still have many others of his early ones. He was one of the great singer songwriters of the 60s/70s/80s.

Thanks for posting. I love this song. First heard it in the move, WUSA. Guess I've just dated myself. Loved that move also.

HapanDragon: I always pictured him as a lonely guy with a past, hitchhiking with his guitar across the country.
