I can't speak for all units and all of the military, but I was taught to stand square with your target. Not just from the military, but from non-military firearm instructors as well. The military's reason is the ceramic plate in our plate carriers cover the front and back of our torso, but not the sides. So you'd rather be hit in the chest than the side.
