That's some real talk about Lauryn Hill! Do you want Lauryn & all that comes with her or do you want only a piece or who you think she is. It's like marriage. Do want all of the person, including their kids or issues or do U just want a live in bootycall or trophy? Its funny how the popular "artist" claim to be growing & maturing but it's almost always a negative growth. The industry & fans only allow U 2 grow into a murder or thug or a hoe or b*tch. When you go the other way you get cut off.
Talib is one of the only current MCs whose brush with "mainstream" success, at least amongst most heads who wouldn't have checked out "underground" MCs prior, I can actually see hope in. Personally, he's not on my top 10 MC list, but I think that if he did have 100% mainstream media backing that he wouldn't crack under the pressure and would actually TRANSFORM the media's view of "rap/hip hop" rather than let the media change him. He's always been insightful through his whole career. Respect
I am proud to say that I have 1 of the greatest flows by L-Boogie on my mixtape. The verse (32 bars) is from 2004. Its an unreleased underground song she did with Seven Star (Florida Artist) and he's the one who sent it to me for my beneficial mixtape. Its on my page check out the space /mobheata.
the song he wrote was inspired by the song "in other words" by ben kweller, which he used without kweller's permission. i don't even know if he credits kweller, if he doesn't, that is a shitty move on his part.

All of that is nice about Lauren Hill, but when people come out to see her, they don't want poetry, they want "Killing me Softly".. They want "Lost One".. They want "That Thing".. She needs to realize that.. I know she's on her spiritual kick, but people don't pay thier money for that.. They want music, not Def Poetry Jam.. Peace.
i think we've got some mainstream artists that try their best. people that formerly were underground that surface through to the public. lauren hill is very mainstream. common. J5. krs-one. the roots. as much as they don't want to be seen as a material icon, they are. it's all in perspective of the people who listen. you can't make people think the way you do...it just is what it is. you can only do so much when you want to put your message out to the people.
Thats a stupid thing to say. Mos Def & Immortal Technique both sound like idiots in interviews (I wouldn't call Mos Def underground though). While T.I., Black Thought & Kweli are both very well spoken in interviews (three mainstream rappers)
Talib actually had Mainstream success with "Get By" which was produced by Kanye.
See lyrical rappers can have fame plus like Illdoc said all the highest grossing Hip Hop albums of the decade have been LYRICAL albums and Lil' Wayne became famous when he switched his style to a more lyrical one. Plus Lupe Fiasco is also nasty yet he's MAINSTREAM.
@HARRYMARIA When was the last time you heard Kweli and The Roots on the radio? When I turn on the radio I hear Nikki Minaj, Drake, and Weezy. Being signed doesn't matter if you're not getting any airplay.
@CustomBumpMaker because they are afraid to take the risk of letting these great MC's shine and take this shit back. the business world of the so called hiphop music dont want to lose the money that the whack garbage on the radio is giving them, im sure you know that already.
@gillagillahousehouse We are going to take our culture back and the whackness will be at a minimum. Mainstream or not. There are many ways to win a war. Hip-Hop!
Jay-Z, Kanye, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, T.I., Beanie blah blah blah and so on are ALL very smart people. Now stop labeling every Mainstream artist as being the worst HELL Lauryn Hill was Mainstream just like Biggie and Pac. Despite what you guys think there ARE GOOD RAPPERS in the Mainstream.
read this it really works!!!!!!!!!!!!!! put your hands on your chest both hands and think of a crush or bf............... tomorrow they will kiss u say they love u or ask u out but here is the catch put this message on five other videos for good luck
Talib is one who really impresses me onstage. His performance is full on and not as stoic as some of his records come off, full respect.
I met Lauren in the mid- 90's after a performance at Emory U. She was as sweet as can be. But her sensitivity may have been misinterpreted over time and she did what she felt best.
She basically stated that she makes music for her people: African Americans. It was misquoted. This is what I remember from my research. People tried to tear her down but it's all bullshit. She makes good music. Her lyrics are thoughtful. I love her music. I wish she'd come back with some more prevalence, but everybody has there own thing to do. Much respect.
I hope this was helpful Cassius. Definitely do your own research, do not let the media make up your mind.
So hold up, somebody out there break down the true story and school me on what actually happened with the whole "I don't make my music for white people" thing. I know this new's is older than yoda, just curious...Love Luaren's musical talent's either way.
you can't spell CRAP without RAP. this is stupid nigger music and shows how ignorant these fucking coons are in buying this shit that promtoes violence, objectifies woman, and makes drug dealing glorified. this is fucking garbage "music" and i hate it so much. FUCK ALL YOU STUPID NIGGERS and funny, a white man eminem is the BEST RAPPER but he's a wigger fucking race traitor.
I have no problem with you being a racist, or being discriminitive, because there will always be people like that, but at least makes sense when you discriminate. If the dialogue in these songs is REALLY what bothers you and not skin color, there are plenty of songs with lyrics not demeaning women, and complaining about drugs instead of advocating them. Do your homework before you condemn an entire genre.
This was the original beat from Boogie Down Production's "P is for free". Check your history. We talkin' 86/'87. That's real. I was around bumping my head to that track. I know this beat in my sleep.
Peace to The Teacha aka KRS-One and Immortal Technique.
