Cambodians have been eating bok la hong for ever as well as many parts of asia. We are all neighbors so our cultures/cuisines are similar throughout southeast asia. U don't have to like other cultures but a least respect them as they do you. We r more alike than we r different.
I'm thais , I have ever seen many clip of papaya salad to foriegner make ,I think this video ,It's like thai papaya salad to I ever ate the most 5555555 .
ok, how about fighting over who created this we think about where we all live? WE all LIVE in ASIA so of course our cultures will blend. Therefore, no country created it.
ha. i just went to your profile and just realized you're Thai as well too. one day, you might as well be like Mark AF (: remember what he talked shit about The king and abphisit? and look at him now. Well, good luck in your future and hope ur attitudes change.
@jemmie209 Ok, you fucking idiot this is a traditional Cambodian food. Thai copied it from Cambodian and called it Thai food. So Thais are still thieves! Happy?
@Littlebirdee No you are the idiot! Cambodia never had those ingredients until culture was mixed and the Thai and Laos brought it over to Cambodia. Trust me I went there to Cambodia and none of the older folks knew what or how to make papaya salad but over in Thai and Laos they all knew how. Yes Khmer culture has been around a long time but it doesn't mean they own everything around the southeast. Studies are now showing that Thais and the Lao came from the Chinese. Not the Khmer.
Ok, idiot LanXangLives. So Cambodia never had those ingredients until culture was mixed and the Thai and Laos brought it over to Cambodia. But Thais are thieves and they are always thieves, right? Thailand even stole Esan from Laos.
@LanXangLives that is totally true finally found someone who have some sense of historical study, and not so narrow minded :) no offense to who ever wanna take it.
Helloo????, Thai and Laos 's relationship is like brother and sister for country. and massive of land in laos used to be Thailand's land but became of war and stuffs.. it ended up in Laos. and so when the land is taken, the people who live in that land is taken with the land too. so no one knows whether this damn Som tam is from Lao or Thai but for sure, it is not from cambodia like others had said.
Thai - Lao relationship is like Scotland and England
@belliouse I don't care about Thai and Lao relationship. Even I know that Thai like to invade its neighbours and always says never did that. I know Thailand's land used to be Burma's land. Thais copied many nations foods and called them Thai foods LOL! Thais are thieves.
"thais copied many nation food and called them Thai food?" please give me at least 5 examples beacause only 5 examples are still considered as not MANY
and "thai invade neighbours and say they never did that" give me examples please.
because just to let you know, Cambodia have a day called "Hate Thais Day" its national day. ++it really did happened (:
@Littlebirdee I'm sorry but please don't confuse us with Burma. The land which Burma came from was a land inhabited by Lao Isaan, and Khmer, and even earlier, the Mon people which basically were one of the basis of "some" Khmer and "some" Lao. The Burmese actually went into Ayuttaya and invaded the thai of their gold and valuables in temples and such. True story.
i like my tam som to be a little darker. when i make mines i add all sorts of ingredients. well, more few things than what the lady in this clip uses.
She hardly did any mixing / pounding! I don't think it's as flavourful if you do it that fast. And she didn't offer a taste to the customer - usually in Thailand, vendors let you taste a little to ask if you want to add anything (more lime, more fish sauce, etc.), somtam is always made to the customer's specifications, not like this. I suspect this somtam lady is serving tourists. The other clue is that she didn't put any MSG, which Thais always want (sadly)
My mouth had to be wired shut for 2 weeks due to jaw surgery and another 6 weeks on soft diet. I am so craving papaya salad, I watch this video almost everyday for comfort. 4 more weeks to go before I can have papaya salad.
I'm surprised that she didn't put in the pa la-stuff. I thought it was a standard in som tam. It stinks though. I prefer Tam Taeng, pretty much the same but with cucumber instead of papaya.
thanks to vietnam for the their fish sauce...wiithout it it taste sucks

It's so difficult to find palm sugar and shrimp paste in southern America unless you wish to drive hours to obscure places.

Cambodia adopted papaya salad from Laos. Actually, thais adopted it from Laos too. Laotian papaya salad is the spiciest and the most delicious IMO.
