GENE "The Duke" CHANDLER SHOULD HAVE BEEN INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME YEARS AGO !!! How he's not in ,( with over 30 chart hits, and a Grammy Hall Of Fame Inductee, singer, songwriter , producer, entrepreneur, and record executive), but one -hit wonder Percy Sledge is, BLOWS MY MIND !!!
Looks like a performance at a wedding, where the male bride is asked to the stage to perform, because that's what he secretly always wanted to do. Quite embarrassing, knowing James Brown's original and mr. Chandler should know, or be told.
Maybe I was a bit harsh, but It was just an impression and I dò appreciate and respect Mr. Chandler's old work a lot. In the meantime, I listened to his studio version of this song, too and I find that much more convincing!
Yeh....if you google up northern soul then you'll get lots of info about the term meaning etc etc mate...of course its American Soul usually..but not exclusively..and its bleedin marvellous.....
I know what "Northern Soul" means and the origins of the term but it really, really bothers me when people describe original American music as Northern Soul. Original American music is categorically NOT "Northern Soul". It is original soul. American soul.
No contest : Gene Chandler wins hands down - pure Northern Soul gold !! JBs -nah wouldnt get anywhere near the dance floor at the Wheel or the Torch or VaVas - just too ... boring ...too basic !!
This was a big hit for J.B. way back when. Gene, as great as he was back in the 60's, is doing a dishwater weak cover of it here. Nobody could cut the Godfather when he got on up and got down.
Yeah, I've had that classic album for decades and agree, but unfortunately his chops didn't stand the test of time very long---this was at least 25 years later--whereas J.B. never really lost it vocally. As to his moves, J.B. could still do that spin and drop-split well into his 60's. Definitely Mr. Dynamite.
Old Sck..back in time yall No

I completely agree. I think Gene's out of his league on this one. James' version is the best. Does anybody have Rainbow 65. That's Gene at his best.
