When I saw this duet on YouTube I cringed, not believing it would work but I humbly apologize for being a sceptic. These two greats actually complement each other. Amazing!
The timbre, power, and perfect pitch of Joni's voice are astonishing. They literally leap out of this forty-some year old recording with enough energy to shatter a crystal glass. Amazing and regrettable that she knowingly chose to smoke tobacco, for she lost that gift many years ago to her addiction. Still got to love her.
I simply love this song. It just nails the feeling you have after a broken relationship, it describes the pain without beeing overly sentimental. And he makes it seem so simple!
Joni's voice is unrecognizable, speaking and singing-wise. But she could've had quite the career as a country belle, but that wasn't her calling. "You Turn Me on, I'm a Radio" was the only sign of that before she really explored some paths of wild artistry.
Well not totally. It's not a bad thing, jut saying her voice is different here and has undergone more of a transformation than most artists who've aged. You didn't have to snap.
@journeythruthepast I understand. Until she hit that high note her voice didn't have that unique tone we have all come to recognize. Still a beautifull voice, pitched lower to match his and quite smooth.Really great video.
airstrip101 took the words out of my mouth - OMG! OMG! Thank you so much for this TREASURE! I would have hated to leave this earth without hearing this.
This shouldn't have worked but somehow it did, lovely. Makes me wish Joni had done (or would do) an album of country covers like Rosanne Cash's "The List."
I'm not picking on Johnny...just the era...but it's a fond sort of picking on the set and conversation ;-p ~ it's what I grew up on. I never cared for Joni Mitchell but I can't deny how beautiful her voice is here.
This has long been a favorite song of my mine. Johnny wrote this with his brother Roy. This version, with Joni's lovely harmony and leads, is just plain special. Yeah, it's just a simple song, but there is real heart to this one. Thanks for posting it.
Johnny Cash was just an amazing artist. At a time when country music people never reached out to other types of music he had great artists like Joni Mitchell and CCR and others on his show.
Music today is nothing compared to what we had in the '60s and early ''70s. Fortunately my children like music from that period. While they were growing up my wife and I played it for them and it grew on them. I'm glad of it.
They like some contemporary artists too. One of my sons likes "Scream" music for what that's worth. I don't comprehend it at all.
i miss those days of tv. there is almost an charming awkwardness to the conversation leading into the song. i miss the days when stars on tv just were themselves and not slick or "hammy". and to top it off it was network prime time tv!!
So beautiful. Joni melts my soul, I swear. The blending of their voices is perfect. It's sweet and it's rich and it's very fulfilling... (haha, sounded like food).
I miss you so much, dollface. I'll never get over your eyes either. Johnny and Joni are so cool together. Thanks for sharing this.
