I used to work as a Firefighter on a major base in the UK. We spent half the weekend either doing 80 mph sat on a wheeled chair being dragged behind a TACR or shooting crows with an air gun. RAF bases are not busy on a weekend!

No its not true, being a member of the ATC would be beneficial for your application but there is no "reserved" place for cadets. Equally you still have to do your basic training and then move onto your trade training. Hope it helps.
